Stopping Gender Bias on Wikipedia

Unread post by Poetlister » Mon Jun 28, 2021 11:13 am

Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, continues to marginalize women on its English language pages and among its staff. This conclusion is not theoretical but unequivocal. It’s based on academic studies, public statistics, and anecdotal evidence. ...

To its credit, the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has been transparent. However, WMF has not found any solid solutions to remedy gender inequality fast enough – at least compared to the large numbers of women in the U.S. population and labor force.

Yup. Not news.

Shame they don't address the 'assuming all English-speakers are from the U.S.' bias, but instead add to it...

It's worse than that. I think they're saying that only people from the USA are notable.
* Women are half the USA’s population.
* Women comprise half the American labor force.
* Women earn more college degrees than men in the USA.

To be fair, "women are half X's population" applies to practically any country (obvious exceptions like the Vatican aside).

I think Bradv (T-C-L) is fortunate the now notorious AfC decline of Donna Strickland (T-H-L) is attributed to "Wikipedia" in that piece, and not directly to him.
