We also need a clever title, of course. Something simple like "Wikipedia's 'Ugly Pics'" would probably be the logical choice for SEO purposes, but SEO considerations haven't stopped us from using puns and other clever titles in the past.

On an even halfway functional project this would've been speedy deleted within minutes of being created instead of sitting for three years.

Denise Lievesley (T-H-L): hard to say if this is unflattering or not; at best, it's uninformative.
Here's a better pic, but presumably it's copyrighted:

If you think it is embarrassingly bad now, check out the original version, it's partly yellow for some reason. link. I've removed the awful image, but it's in use on other projects so Commons won't delete it. I've also taken the article to AFD as non-notable original research. The article is about five times longer than the one source it uses, that's a red flag. :dalek:

Compare with Abiotic_component (T-H-L), which is better written and referenced. It's still illustrated with images that were probably made by middle schoolers, though. Must have been a class project.

Sports articles seem to be the source of a lot of crappy images. It's not hard to see why, but if this was the best I could do I wouldn't bother.

I'm not even sure I'm buying this. This does not look like an NFL stadium and there's hardly anyone there.

It could be a preseason game, as that might explain the lack of fans, but most likely it's simply because the game was being played in Los Angeles where people generally don't bother to go to the stadium if their team has been losing. All the necessary info is in the 1989–1996 section of the article about the Falcons, which is also where the (uncropped) photo is being used, appropriately enough (it's also being used in 1991 Atlanta Falcons season (T-H-L)). The Rams went 3-13 that year, and I might add that Anaheim Stadium was a real dump during that era anyway, which probably also affected the attendance numbers. Btw, the seats are red because the place was originally built for the California Angels, whose team colors are red and white — the Rams only started playing there in 1980.

By the way, the Steve Broussard in the photo is the (relatively famous) running back, but there's another NFL Steve Broussard (a punter) who only played four games for the Packers in '75. His WP article is literally a verbatim copy-paste of his newspaper obituary, complete with this bit:
A memorial service will be held at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on Howard Avenue in Biloxi on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 2:00 pm. Friends may visit from 1:00 pm until service time.

Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is honored to serve the Broussard family.
Somebody might want to look into that one.

By an astonishing coincidence, that article has been completely rewritten by ... guess who. Whether this chap really deserves an article is another matter, but an AfD would be pointless as he's technically within the rules.

The problem with some of these images is that they are old, meaning they were scanned form an actual photograph. Cropping and blowing up such images pretty much just does not work. I'd not heard of Mr. O'Connot before but it is mildly surprising that this is basically the only free image of someone who was in the public eye for so long.

Its age demographic and quite common for entertainers of his Generation. Des O'Connor, while a widely known person in the UK is not someone who the under-40's are going to be particularly interested in. Des O'Connor's fans are not of the age group when you would expect them to be taking selfies and/or uploading to social media with free licenses.

Surely it's just a question of someone e-mailing the firm. It needs to be confirmed that they are aware that any file on Commons is available for use by anyone.

I think "unflattering" is in the mind of the beholder. I don't think all of these are unflattering, even though they may not be good choices for an encyclopedia article. For instance, is this infobox image from Archduke Rudolf of Austria (1919–2010) (T-H-L) unflattering, or is it charming?

It is a simply delightful composition. The slender frame subtly intrudes upon this apparently peaceful scene, asking us, "how will history remember this man?" - it points an almost accusatory finger at the subject: a man adrift, unfocused, and seemingly submerged by an ocean of negative space; a reflection, perhaps, of a life spent in exile, or, a memento mori, an exhortation of the inevitable deliquescence of memory...

This one, on the other hand, is just shit.

Kerry Raheb, investment banker: 'filed paperwork' as an independent candidate for the 2022 Vermont Senate elections:

Kerryraheb (T-C-L) uploaded this to Commons, and has just been partially blocked on en.wp for repeatedly adding his photo to the 2022 United States Senate election in Vermont (T-H-L) article. Personally, if I was going into politics, I'd be edit-warring to keep the photo out. Or is he standing for the 'all chin and no brains' party?

I agree with your comments on the merits of the image, it is a godawful 'portrait', and there is no particular reason why this gentleman should be permitted to adorn that article with his promotional pic, and lots of good reasons he should not.

However, it's far from unusual for somebody to think that a WP page is just another page on the internet where you can plonk a picture, like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc, and there is no particular reason to expect everyone in the world to understand WP's particular rules and procedures until they have been politely explained.

Nice, then, to see the wikipedians welcoming him on his talkpage with information and encouragement:

After the usual, confusing, stilted, impersonal templates and "warnings" have been applied, with no response, or particular reason to think he has read and understood any of it - it's time for the personal touch -
Better yet. If you're who you claim to be? then stop acting like a child & conform to the project's rules. GoodDay (talk) 06:45, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
Encouraging, too, that such a prolific editor as Mr. GoodDay didn't even manage to include a valid English sentence in that busybodying little outburst...

See here for the 'COI discussion' to which the user was invited (but probably never even noticed or understood it as an invitation), wherein everyone (with one notable exception) just chants "evil spammer", "hang him high"...

GoodDay is an asshole, no question. And the way Wikipedia routinely misuses the phrase 'conflict of interest' never helps communication with newcomers either. As for Raheb though (I'll take him at his word that it is him), I don't think this is his first Wikipedia account: see also Rahebforsenate (T-C-L), who seemed to think that edits like this link were appropriate, and got blocked for it.

As for Raheb though (I'll take him at his word that it is him), I don't think this is his first Wikipedia account: see also Rahebforsenate (T-C-L), who seemed to think that edits like this link were appropriate, and got blocked for it.
You may well be correct, I didn't look into it that deeply - if the folks involved saw what you did I don't see where they mentioned it either - I just saw the usual, appalling pile-on and groaned. You can see it time and time again.

I know it's tedious to do things properly, and far easier just to use Twinkle to pop on a couple of impersonal templates then block people - but it still never looks good.
