I had a bad case of the misconfigurations earlier. I just held my breath and that fixed the error. Everything appears to be working well now. Breath In. Breath Out. Loop Until (status.death_yes=TRUE). I shall book myself in for a system checkup anyway, just in case.
No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.

I'd just like to say this is all Jake's fault and if he hadn't been so lazy none of this would ever have happened. Plus if I open the extra smileys on my phone I can't get back to my post. Otherwise there would be more smileys. :crying:

500 Server Error
A misconfiguration on the server caused a hiccup. Check the server logs, fix the problem, then try again.

Happened just a few minutes ago.

How do I "check the server logs"?

Oh, I tried to post *this* massage, and the response was,

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

User 'wikiped3_root' has exceeded the 'max_user_connections' resource (current value: 1) [1226]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.

Contacting an "administrator"... hmm, I'm an administrator (on Wikipedia). Should I "move the page"?
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at webmaster@wikipediaforum.com to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
No coffee? OK, then maybe just a little appreciation for my work out here?

Seems to come and go (or as someone I know once said of their Dalnet connection, to be bouncing up and down like a $20 whore). Do they have us on the same server as ONTD or something? (Wow, that's a dusty article.)

My understanding is that the bouncing-up-and-down thing has become more of a "high-end escort" type of offering among the sex worker community, but of course I can't speak from personal experience.

Anyway, they tell me they're doing some sort of major "server maintenance" thingy that's supposed to start in about 10 minutes, and maybe last 5-6 hours, which — in theory — could mean they're trying to do something to stem the tide of complaints from customers on shared-server plans. But I wouldn't count on it. At this rate, we'll have to get the move done sooner than I would have preferred, as it means less time for me/us to talk to hosting companies directly, and make sure they're not the sort of people who will drop us completely the minute someone makes a minor/petty complaint.

Long story short, this will probably go on for a few more days, but after that, God/Satan/Cthulhu/Whoever-the-Heck willing, we'll get this thing moved over and page-load times should go back to less than 3 or 4 seconds, from the current 15-40 seconds. (And as I mentioned earlier, I'm pretty sure the database errors are mostly a symptom of the slow load times.)

Okay, it's now 90 minutes into this procedure, and page-load times are near-instantaneous. We'll see how long that lasts (I'm guess another 15 minutes or so), but this is starting to remind me of some of the radar-scope scenes from Airplane!.

I'm getting pretty long load times again and also almost non-stop 500 errors

What I have found is that the site cache is a problem. So if I hit an internal server error then I need to try to find a way to bypass the cache (like putting in a new URL rather than using any of the link assets on the previous page when using the back button).

I get long load time, 500 errors, the occasional sql error. And one time I got a weird new one: instead of getting to the forum thread I got the blog page, but where the blog texts are supposed to be appeared "Page not found". I double-checked the URL and when I reloaded I got the correct forum thread.

Getting a new error message sometimes. Something about a hiccup. Also every so often it claims you just plain don't exist. Most of the errors are on the forum vs the home page, it seems like.

Don't worry, I promise not to accuse you of "jinxing" us when it inevitably goes to shit again. :)

Then again, I did figure something out that forces me to correct something I wrote earlier:
I erroneously wrote:I should mention that late last year, they "rolled out" a new CPanel wherein I can no longer view raw server logs, which is what I would normally use (along with site stats) to verify whether or not we're under some sort of attack. In our case, that alone is probably a deal-breaker...
The thing is, in recent years I haven't looked at server logs or stats very often — only when things are going badly performance-wise. So I hadn't really looked for that stuff until shortly before I posted that, and as it turns out, the old CPanel is sort of still there, they've just hidden it behind a few extra clicks to "simplify" things for the neophyte Wordpress-blog accounts they're trying to attract these days. I only figured this out yesterday, which many of you will rightly take as evidence that I'm really not very good at this stuff anymore. (Maybe I never was! )

Once I was able to see that stuff I did notice an unrecognized bot calling itself "seek," on two IP addresses registered to Alibaba.com in Hong Kong, that's been hitting us pretty hard over the last 3-4 days. So I went to add the IPs to our .htaccess file — as y'do — and noticed that someone from Bluehost had taken out our entire IP "deny" list completely, no doubt thinking that it was having an adverse effect on performance. Maybe it was, but it also made us vulnerable to ill-behaved search-engine crawlers like Yandex, Baidu, etc. Anyway, I blocked the two IPs. That was about 16 hours ago and things seem to have been OK during the entire time since, so maybe that helped...

Regardless, we're still going to move. I'm just looking for a rationale for not rushing into it, partially because I'm a notorious procrastinator, but also because it's basically impossible to find unbiased/unpaid-for reviews of web hosting companies. (I might add that SiteGround and Hostinger are both out of the running as potential "landing spots," but the aforementioned A2, TMD, and GreenGeeks are still on the short list... in fact, they pretty much are the short list, as of now.)

The problems that persist for me are adding smileys to posts, being repeatedly logged out when hitting submit to post or update my signature or send a private message, and repeatedly getting an error message when attempting to log in.

That's likely a product of the caching 'fix' the hosting company clumsily attached to our problem.

You may want to try wiping the cookies and logging in again.

My hunch is this is what was causing all my problems. So many errors I was getting seemed related to "TOO MANY REQUESTS" complaints which I think could be explained by crawlers searching for Neelix-like instances of this or that word or phrase.

Good work, techteam!

Previously, on my PC at home and my phone at work, whenever I viewed a thread here, the cookies (umm, that internet whatchamacallit) and not 25 Apr 2024 topically not Anzac biscuit (T-H-L)) would un-orange the thread. Lately, when I view a thread here, it's still in orange, unless I log out and view it again. That said, this would appear to entirely unimportant.

Also: has anyone read GGM's posthumous Until August? I haven't . For me, that will be after I finish My Name is Red, and The Land of Green Plums.

I am definitely confused by the Anzac biscuit but if I understand this then doing what Zoloft suggested to Smultronstället might help

PS I am impressed by the reading list. Those all sound like really great books

Do they stay orange after reloading? If so, this is probably caused by a recent change. When you use the back button the page no longer automatically reloads, instead it uses a cached version. That means links stay orange. But when you reload they should be marked as read. See above.

Sebastopol? Not sure what the game is. I guess you are saying that Anzac biscuits were sent there. OK but how does that apply to his server cache? It doesn't actually matter, mind you, but apparently I am missing an idiom

I'm assuming that "not 25 Apr 2024 topically not Anzac biscuit (T-H-L)" was meant as a reference to the fact that the Landing at Anzac Cove (T-H-L) occurred on 25 April (1915). greyed.out.fields' post is from 27 April.

Don't. It's interesting from a scholarly perspective to see how GGM's style changed (and perhaps for diehard fans), but is otherwise disappointing. There's a reason he didn't want it published.

I am definitely confused by the Anzac biscuit but if I understand this then doing what Zoloft suggested to Smultronstället might help

PS I am impressed by the reading list. Those all sound like really great books
Gallipoli, yah heathen.
In the height of COV19 lockdowns, my reads were A Little Life (T-H-L), The Corrections (T-H-L) and The Peripheral (T-H-L). I had that good fortune to have good books to read when...

Previously, on my PC at home and my phone at work, whenever I viewed a thread here, the cookies (umm, that internet whatchamacallit) and not 25 Apr 2024 topically not Anzac biscuit (T-H-L)) would un-orange the thread. How was The Peripheral? I've been meaning to read Gibson for ages, especially Neuromancer, but have never gotten around to him.

I enjoy gibson’s early work more than his later work.

Me too, but his later stuff is still worth reading if you like his style.

I think we* had a thread (sort of) about Go Set a Watchman (T-H-L) back in 2017 or so. I forgot to mention that The Sympathizer (T-H-L) was another one of my lockdown reads. It's described as "black comedy" - comedies don't come blacker than this. What a book to read when there was curfew in place.

Don't. It's interesting from a scholarly perspective to see how GGM's style changed (and perhaps for diehard fans), but is otherwise disappointing. There's a reason he didn't want it published.
From memory, Go Set a Watchman was published against the advice of her estate's attorneys.

I enjoyed it. Its prescient Instagram-like social media posting but in the near future of later than 2014 hit well with me.

I do recall some interview with Gibson (or was it Neal Stephenson (T-H-L)?) where his kids asked him, "dad, in your books about the future, why are there no smartphones?"

Stephensen's Diamond Age and Cryptonomicon were thoroughly enjoyable.
