01:25 < PrideDay> "calm down" while homophobic fucking bigots abuse their block buttons
01:25 < PrideDay> whatever
01:25 < Shirik> I suspect that's not why a block occurred
01:25 < Prodego> Well personal attacks aren't going to solve anything
01:25 < PBASH607> Please dont say that
01:25 < PrideDay> I suspect it is
01:25 < Prodego> but we can look in to anything you think was abusive
01:26 < PrideDay> look at what Gilliam and Binksternet were up to then
01:26 < PBASH607> Um, proof or links?
01:26 < Prodego> PrideDay: links would be better

01:27 < PBASH607> Lol
01:27 < Prodego> Shirik: you want to check it out?

01:28 < Shirik> PrideDay, did you actually expect this to receive a positive response? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... =562185458
01:28 < PrideDay> I want to know the answer
01:28 < GorillaWarfare> PrideDay: I don't see how Prodego was threatening.

01:33 < JustBerry> ...
01:34 < Prodego> PrideDay: Wikipedia has to be written neutrally, so we don't take a stance on the morality of anything. We just write it factually.

01:38 < mareklug> i'm just relating what the Polish forum people write
01:38 < GorillaWarfare> PBASH607: Oh trust me, so are we.

01:44 < GorillaWarfare> PrideDay: But because you are using that nick, it would appear that the issue has resolved itself
01:47 < IDoH> Y'all want to watch Mr.Rogers or Bob Ross?
01:47 < IShadowed> no.
01:48 < IDoH> LOL. That's my way of saying "calm the @*!# down".

01:54 < mareklug> PrideDay word for the day for ya ^
01:55 < PrideDay> "[20:49] <IDoH> Y'all want to watch Mr.Rogers or Bob Ross?"
01:55 < mareklug> how ironic that the most docile and innocent of any fun person gets the PrideDay-blame (tm)
01:56 < GorillaWarfare> PrideDay: I believe IDoH mentioned later that that was an attempt to tell people here to calm down.
01:57 < GorillaWarfare> PrideDay: Now, would you like to actually discuss the issue? Or are you just going to continue to call people names?
01:57 * IDoH isn't known to be socially adept.
01:57 < PrideDay> are you going to keep making fun of me?
01:57 < GorillaWarfare> (I'd suggest the former)
01:57 < Prodego> yea I'll give you that one
01:57 < GorillaWarfare> PrideDay: No.
01:57 < Shirik> the correct way for everyone to calm down is to listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9BK3xcRH1g
01:57 < Prodego> now GorillaWarfare is indeed being pedantic
01:58 < IShadowed> still this song

01:58 < IShadowed> if not
01:58 < IShadowed> consider my feelingsies hurt
01:58 < Prodego> PrideDay: anyway, if you would like to be unblocked, you can come on over to #wikipedia-en-unblock and we can discuss it

02:02 < GorillaWarfare> PrideDay: Because that is where we discuss blocks, not here.
02:02 < PrideDay> so others cant see what you say and you can make more fun im sure
02:03 < IDoH> PrideDay: You can keep this chatroom open, too, I think.
02:03 < GorillaWarfare> There are plenty of people there that can see what you say. The difference is that they can actually change your block settings.
02:03 < mareklug> PrideDay you should go there, really. A whole new population to call homophobic big ass losers. No, really.
02:03 < GorillaWarfare> mareklug: Not helpful.
02:03 < IDoH> mareklug: Shut up.
02:03 < mareklug> GorillaWarfare cannot assume good faith anymore. the person is obviously touched with querulancy of the worst kind.
02:04 < GorillaWarfare> mareklug: And taunting xyr helps... how?
02:04 < PBASH607> mareklug, you are on a thin red line

Nice. I didn't go over this one much, but I saw the log clip you posted in the Russavia thread in which TParis and Ironholds and others chatted it up, sought each other's support at Wikipedia administrative forums, passed snickering judgment on Russavia and others, enjoyed all the blocking action generally, and totally revealed that their participation at Wikipedia is not to build the project as say, a botanist improves the article on Katsura trees, but rather an extension of their online social activity. It'd be interesting to know if AGK, who actually did the hands-on in blocking Russavia on a non-policy basis, frequents the channel.

I hope you do more of the same Chatson de Channel. If they tighten up access to the channel or start moving these conversations to private IRC, it's another indication of the regularity of secretive and transparency-avoiding behavior by Wikipedia's administrators.

Feel free to use the [hide] tag at the top and bottom, (just the logs themselves) so as to collapse the huge log and allow those who want to read the ability to 'show' the log and read it. helps with loading times.

Thanks!

I'm just gonna share the occasional moment shedding light on how people operate over there. Not gonna editorialize or take sides. Might be tasteless comments behind editors' backs, canvassing or how they handle people with complaints. Don't plan to do it too often and overwhelm your good forum here but will share fairly regularly and try to post to relevant threads if I can.

I'm also happy to republish stuff sent to me if anyone wants to share logs without jeopardizing their good name on IRC.

They have never located my logger either, and it sits there day in and day out, though there's rarely much interesting anymore. The point was to deny russavia and crew a public ranting spot, one less outlet for their lunacy.

I'll collapse the OP log.

Yes, friend Chatson, we encourage you to post juicy logs. We are raptly attentive.

Thanks!

Question! Usually show/hide (also known as 'spoiler' tags on other forums) operate by hiding whats behind it. They dont actually prevent it loading in the browser. They all still load, you just cant see it until you click the show/unhide. Have you altered the standard coding in some way so that it only loads it when its unhidden? And if yes, care to share :D

The content still loads, but natheless is still faster because of not being in the forum interface. I've tested load times both ways. It's not a real fancy piece of code, but I'll just PM you so we won't derail the discussion.

Of course, Bishonen (T-C-L) and Demiurge1000 (T-C-L) were more concerned that a new account raised this concern on Newyorkbrad (T-C-L)'s page.

KWW (T-C-L) blocked me for three months after I stated the obvious

Like I said before, #wikipedia-en is utter off-topic nonsense 99.9% of the time and logged by probably multiple users (5+ is my guess), nothing new here. Everything that would be consider "juicy" happens outside in private, and if you are stupid enough to stay at a channel with the same name for 24 hours consecutively, it becomes rather obvious for the channel operators after a while that you are logging and you would be kicked banned from Wikipedia related IRC.

Plus, nutcases open private channels routinely to discuss harassing/blocking someone they don't like. No one on WP will ever discuss any of that.

"#Wikipedia-en-help, #wikipedia-en-afc, and #wikipedia-en-spi, among other channels" are frequented by arb Timotheus Canens. Ultraexactzz is on IRC too, though he says not exactly where.

Kiefer has a right to be aggravated by Ironholds' and Tparis' comments about him, not only for their content but the mere fact that these members of Wikipedia's prestigious administrative corps. hang out on IRC snickering about and plotting against editors. Newyorkbrad says he'll have a look at things when he wakes up. Among his options should be desysoping Ironholds and Tparis. An unthinkable move previously, but it may well be time to start changing the rules of the game.

Young Oliver has always had a special sense of humour:

Quote:
We have a banned user currently down as attending. Are banned users typically welcome at these events? --Tango (talk) 15:37, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
Probably just trolling, but if not we can probably throw him in front of a bus or something. Ironholds (talk) 15:46, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
If he's not welcome that should be made clear to him beforehand. It's hardly fair to throw him in front of a bus without warning! --Tango (talk) 15:49, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
This is warning :P. Seriously though, I don't see any reason why a banned user can't turn up. If they cause a scene they can get turfed out, simple as. Ironholds (talk) 16:44, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

We could do worse than invite him over and present him with a shiny new box cutter. :D

Fram (T-C-L) unblocked me:
Quote:
I have unblocked.

Yes, Kiefer Wolfowitz (T-C-L)'s comment was unacceptable on its own, and repetition of this or similar comments, even when provoked, should result in new blocks.

But considering the circumstances, with a functionary making an extremely inappropriate "joke" (if one can call it that) on a channel where Kiefer Wolfowitz has no means to respond, a "tit-for-tat" response, while very ill-considered, is also understandable. The fact that thus far, Kiefer Wolfowitz has received a 3-month block while User:Ironholds (T-C-L) hasn't even received a warning (even if his remark was technically, wiki-lawyerishly off-wiki, it is still a location where he acts in function, not some off-wiki personal discussion), is a guarantee that this block will not have the desired effect at all, and will only increase the feelings of unequal treatment of admins (or other functionaries) vs. non-admins.

Kiefer Wolfowitz, please, if something like this happens again, don't lash out, just go to some noticeboard and make a calm and civil complaint there. That will at least have a chance that the result will be the reverse of what happened now. Fram (T-C-L) 2:59 pm, Today (UTC+2)

Really sorry to disappoint, Eric, but you couldn't be more wrong. I've been in there for a while. It's not only very quiet, but for the greatest part also on-topic. I saw the thing that "Chatson" posted when it went past last week, and occasional naff comments like that really are about as bad as it gets. If he's looking to stir up drama it's going to be a stretch.

You may be thinking of what the place was like around 2007 or so. I remember looking in, finding it far too busy and not being bothered to stay.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, that Wikipedia's administrative culture is in no way as abusive as it was five or more years ago. Some of the bad actors have been tossed, more have left, and others have grown up from teenagers into twenty-somethings with more sense.

No matter what one may think of Wikipedia's RFA process (and it is akin to running a gauntlet of paddle-bearing frat boys buck naked with one's pants around one's ankles) it has over time provided a high enough bar to serve as a barrier to many interested in life as a game-playing weasel with buttons. There is scrutiny and the scrutiny does work.

This is not to say that many administrators are not part of a clique. Yes, Virginia, there is a cabal. But it is a pale shadow today of what it was in the middle years of the '00s, by all accounts.

And I have said it before, and will say it again, that it is far more abusive today. Even five years ago the idea of deleting good articles simply because written by a 'banned user' would have been unthinkable then. There were a reasonable number of people who actually believed in creating content and who had more power than the philistines. Now the philistines are running the show.

Now, the philistines are generally more rule-abiding as a group. That's the hallmark of a good philistine. And in the sense that they do follow the rules, they are less abusive. The problem is the rules they follow are very stupid ones (e.g. about deleting articles by banned users). So in that sense, the culture is more abusive.

So you are wrong.

This stems from your recent, personal butthurt at their hands, not on anything reliable or any sort of objective analysis. The grand cabals, the Slimvirgn's, Jayjg's are shades of their former power-wielding selves. No one begs and scrapes before Jimbo to curry favor...quite the opposite really, people go out of their way to score Jimbo-hating points these days.

There are individual admins that are problematic at times, just as there are individual editors that are the same. Nothing more.

Small cabals are more common nowadays, and are in many ways more dangerous than the massive ones of a few years ago.

Yes, as I said. The old cabals at least had some grasp of building a comprehensive reference work. The current lot are just philistines. [Tarc - a 'Philistine' is an uncouth person who is hostile to art, culture, and the intellectual virtues].

Quote:
You know what the big problem here is? It's very simple: the arrogance of the self-styled "content creators", who think that they are better than everyone else and shouldn't be forced to follow the rules. There is no reason why admins would randomly decide to make trouble for the people who write large amounts of content. Anyone who propagates that theory is either kidding themselves or simply a bald-faced liar. Rather, these "content-creating" people (who don't seem to believe that anyone else has ever written an article) are extremely arrogant, largely because they have so many friends who pat them on the back and tell them how wonderful they. This gives them a sense of entitlement, which causes problems. When the admins are forced to deal with these problems, the troublemakers and their trouble-making friends resort to playing the "I create more content than you do so, so I can do whatever I want and you don't count for anything" game. That is the problem. The most embarrassing aspect of this sorry reality is that these people are usually the ones seen accusing other people of being childish. A bunch of toothless dick mittens are a lot better to have around than organized and experienced game-players. Randy's point here is the correct one.

Why, thanks, Professor! I'll have to pass on the usual oral remuneration that you're probably used to from the students, though. [Peter - 'remuneration' means payment for services rendered].

At the risk of spouting a platitude – while it's easy to slip into black-and-white thinking (we do it more often here than I would like), few if any people at Wikipedia are really all good or all bad. It's all shades of grey. Same applies to us here, of course.

Fram is very much an abusive insider.

I wrote before that either I had grossly underestimated Fram or that he had astonishing powers of reflecting on criticism (and lso earning something). Today's action confirms that judgment.

Randy from Boise has made similar assessments, at least recognizing that Fram's actions are usually based on principle, which he sometimes applies rather aggressively.

Unlike, e.g. Kww, Fram immediately presented his block of Eric for review at AN, and he does not seem defensive about it. (I have questioned the length.)

For a little of the flavor of the old #en-wikipedia-admins, have a look at the history of Wikipedia talk:IRC channels/wikipedia-en-admins (T-H-L) and its associated MfDs; and the talk page for the channel guidelines on Meta. Crappy fighting all the way down. It's unrecognizable as what it is today.

(Also: maybe a thread split for the discussion of admins and cabals and whatnot in general?)

Fram has his function at WP as a rule enforcer, for sure, but I'm pretty much of the belief that he is temperamentally unsuited to having block or deletion buttons. Put simply: he's a hothead. He needs the tool box for his work at Contributor Copyright Investigations, but definitely needs to be very closely watched whenever he ventures outside that domain...

Which is another problem. Everyone has their own skills, but the Admin tools only come in one big box, not sold separately. You've either got them or you don't, there's no half-way probationary measures. And so all admins not only have all of the buttons, they're also judged on the use (and lack of use) of all of them.

If you're going to go for such metaphors of brutality, why not compare it to the Spartan agoge complete with how certain members are chosen for a secret police that persecutes the helots?

Do your views concerning Wikipedia, which I suspect have been widely ridiculed by the admins and your fellow-users, hinge on the essentially mechanistic nature of wiki-based life, and concern means for operating the organic machinery of wiki-kind by calculated chemical action after the failure of natural processes?

What is Brad saying here?
Quote:
the channel is close enough to this project that standards of decorum should be observed. That IRC logs do come to light sometimes, while contrary to Freenode and channel policies, also speaks in favor of phrasing one's remarks bearing in mind that one is speaking in at least a semi-public forum rather than a private conversation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... d_response

He's saying remarks like these are objectionable because they might be make public. He doesn't say they are objectionable because they are objectionable.

Keyes also comments:
Quote:
I made a rather morbid and snarky joke in a private channel on IRC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... _Ironholds

So it's important to say it's a private channel.
Quote:
A second mistake was arguably being dumb enough to assume that a prohibition on public logging was something people with the trust of the community would follow.

So what's wrong is not saying objectionable stuff like this, but rather 'freeing' the information into full public view? Why does this organisation vigorously promote stuff like Wikileaks and free culture and 'information must be free', while at the same time having all this secret stuff?
Quote:
the argument of "you're a WMF employee, you should know better" is something I find troubling. Staffers should certainly be held to standards of decorum, in their role as staff and bystaff. The joke was made in my personal capacity (I do not maintain membership of that channel in my role as a staffer). Were it made in my professional capacity, that would be a matter for HR, not for the arbitration committee, and it seems an inappropriate thing for an arbitrator to be factoring in.

In an internet organisation, how do you know when a remark is made in a professional capacity, and when not? In any case, most proper organisations have a rule that you should avoid speaking about any subject that relates to its business, at any time.

[edit] Oh yes and see this thread viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2572
