What's the likelihood that Musk and his billionaire pals don't care if Twitter tanks because they're successfully destroying a large scale forum for community discussion. They have so much money that it doesn't actually matter to them, so why not take out a place that influences public opinion on a way they don't like?

I don't think that really factors into it at all. Musk certainly doesn't like people saying mean things about him anywhere—if there's anything this saga has amply demonstrated, it's that his skin is exceptionally thin—but he's also not really smart enough to have that angle. At best he's a useful idiot for people bankrolling him who would like Twitter destroyed, but every move and backtrack and advancement he's made makes it seem like he said he'd buy it, tried to back out when he realized he would have to, and now is just running it like how he'd want. If it combusts he'll just blame everyone else and follow the Trump playbook.
