Did an Anonymous WP Editor Try to Out the Petraeus Affair?

Unread post by HRIP7 » Tue Nov 13, 2012 5:33 pm

Gawker: Did an Anonymous Wikipedia Editor Try to Out the Petraeus Affair Back in January?

Gawker are asking for help with some detective work.
On January 26, one day after Broadwell appeared on the Daily Show to tout her Petraeus book, Wikipedia editor Vanobamo, who edits a lot of Wikipedia pages pertaining to the Daily Show, created a page for Broadwell. While that was normal, things got odd less than an hour later, when an anonymous editor with the IP address 64.101.72.113 logged on and wrote of the ladder-climbing Broadwell, "Petraeus is reportedly one of her many conquests." It was the anonymous user's first and only Wikipedia edit, and it was deleted within an hour by editor Dsutton, who flagged it as "libel."

It turns out now, of course, that it might not have been libel at all. But was Broadwell's Wikipedia outing simply good guesswork by a Daily Show viewer out for a laugh, or was the person behind 64.101.72.113 actually privy to the secret that would eventually topple one of the U.S. government's brightest stars?

[...]

If you've got more information about who's behind the Broadwell Wikipedia page reveal, if it is in fact that, email me [cord@gawker.com].

A comment on Milo's blog (ps, nice work Milo):
"Actually those reverse ip addresses, while not accurate for residences are accurate for commercial establishments with fixed IPs. The IP resolves to a bank in Colorado just outside of Denver where Broadwell lived a few years ago and where she has traveled to speak at GOP fundraisers and other talks the past year. IE it is notable this comes from somewhere where she resided and presumably people know her."
Hah? Then what is all this about Cisco?

You will also note that one of the first people on the scene when Broadwell's bio was recreated last week: Jokestress. Meow. (She hates conservative women.)

Plus:
Even before this affair being made public, this person would've easily passed WP:NOTABILITY and particularly WP:AUTHOR criteria 3 as her best-selling book had received a great amount of reviews and she herself was a guest on multiple media outlets, including even The Daily Show. --Oakshade (talk) 03:22, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Agreed in spades. Her passing WP:Author has nothing to do with any contents of a Wikipedia article about her or any dalliance. Toddst1 (talk) 04:33, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
If so, why was it deleted in January as "non-notable"??

Cisco is the service provider.

Boing Boing: Was someone at CENTCOM fluffing for Jill Kelley on Wikipedia? (including shout-out to Andrea James)

The IP in question appears to belong to "DoD Network Information Center". This one should be interesting....

From the Boing Boing piece:
Boing Boing pal Andrea James, who is a Wikipedia editor, saw an odd edit when writing the Jill Kelley bio: On 9 February 2012, a US Central Command IP added "Jill Kelley, amateur ambassador and chess player" to Arcadia University's Wikipedia page.
Note that Arcadia University began as Beaver Female Seminary, then Beaver College.

Arcadia was also a small part of making my elaborate hoax on Wikipedia last year sound more legitimate.

A final note... keep an eye on the Wikipedia "article for deletion" discussion about the biography of Jill Kelley. See how most of the "Keep" logic could also apply to former WMF chief operating officer, Carolyn Doran, but Doran will never have a Wikipedia biography.

The IP in question, 214.26.68.129, asked some unanswered questions on wikia.

[Is it] okay to forward funny emails and chain letters from your DoD email account.

When should you report a sexual assault incident?

Well, now look what you two have done. A citizen journalist at Examiner -- note, not the "mainstream media" -- has taken your ideas and run with them... Department of Defense offers wiki clues in Petraeus affair.

(Warning: the site linked to has so many pop-up, pop-under, and interstitial advertisements, it's not likely you'll want to even read the whole story to the end, nor leave a comment.)

There was a follow-up on this from The Daily Dot.
A reader then tipped us off to the likely identity of the mystery Wikipedia editor. And while it’s someone with a serious connection to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), it’s certainly not Gen. Allen.
