Wikipedia on Hunter’s Civic Biology

Unread post by Poetlister » Sat Mar 24, 2018 7:38 pm

Speaking of Wikipedia, and following up on the interview with John West by Forbes contributor Jerry Bowyer that I wrote about a little earlier, I was curious what the online encyclopedia does with Civic Biology, the 1914 textbook at the heart of the 1925 Scopes trial. What’s the “civic” aspect of biology?

Of course, there’s a page on the subject, and you guessed it, they deceptively minimize the theme of eugenics and racism in the book. The editors claim the subject is found on just “one page of the 432 page textbook.” And they concede that author George William Hunter “also believed that the Caucasian race was the highest type of all the races.”

Note: Evolution News is the propaganda organ of the Discovery Institute — which exists to promote ‘Intelligent Design’ in schools as part of a plan to displace Evolution theory with theistic Creationism.

Yeah, this is a problem for HP Lovecraft fans, too. Okay, sure, he was a racist, sympathized with eugenicists, and even said that he "liked" Hitler (though it was before the really bad Nazi stuff started happening). But what are you gonna do, try to burn your copy of the Necronomicon? We all saw what happened when they tried that in Ash vs. Evil Dead. No thanks!

Obviously, when I report a news item there's no suggestion that I necessarily agree with it. After all, I even report items that claim that Jimbo is wonderful. :D
