2016 Wikipedians of the Year
Jimbo Wales continues the proud tradition of naming someone as his "Wikipedian of the Year". This year, with two honorees joining him on the stage at Esino Lario, one might say it formed a threesome?
The winners: fresh off the stage from the Wikidiversity Conference in Washington DC are Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight (User:Rosiestep (T-C-L)) and the woman who kept that conference a very safe space (as Wikimedia DC's Safe Space chairwoman), Emily Temple-Wood (User:Keilana (T-C-L)). Let's have a big round of applause!
No mention of whether Jimbo still attaches $5,000 to the prize or not, but one suspects that 2014's nomination of a dead person, and 2015's award to "it's a secret" kind of absolved him of having to open his wallet any more.

someone is jealous! lol, could you imagine a member in good standing here ever winning. Like imagine you creating an alternate username and working for years to get wikipedian of the year (even hiring a female actor to appear at some official events I guess). and then unmasks himself at the award ceremony. start the gofundme for this project now!thekohser wrote:Let's have a big round of applause!

Re: 2016 Wikipedians of the Year
This year's award is just another joke process to award 2 people that are on Jimbo's favorites list that do far less for the project than a lot of others. But at least awarding to 2 women makes Jimbo and the WMF look like they care about the Gender gap (which they do not)!

That isn't really a good reason they would win. If anything it would eliminate them from consideration.Poetlister wrote:I can't see why not. Our roster includes several current and former Arbs.milowent wrote:could you imagine a member in good standing here ever winning.

Well that's true, but given how the community responded in the last vote, in record numbers and with generally low scores of votes of trust, I think a lot of the community thinks pretty low of the incumbents. Sure they passed, but most had pretty low percentages.Poetlister wrote:You may have forgotten that you're not the judge.Kumioko wrote:That isn't really a good reason they would win. Plus a lot of people saw what they did with the Cla and TDA cases.

Re: 2016 Wikipedians of the Year
I don't normally notice the DYKs on the Main Page of Wikipedia, but the phrase 'Wikipedian of the Year' caught my attention. One of the co-winners of this year's award already had an article: Emily Temple-Wood (T-H-L) (Keilana (T-C-L)) - article created on 10 March 2016.
The other winner of the 2016 Wikipedian of the Year award also has an article: Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight (T-H-L) (Rosiestep (T-C-L)). Unlike Emily's article, this one was created on 27 June 2016, around three days after the award presentation on 24 June.
Three other Wikipedians of the Year have articles on Wikipedia (Rauan Kenzhekhanuly (T-H-L), Rémi Mathis (T-H-L), Ihor Kostenko (T-H-L)).
Two don't have articles. Discuss?

As if propping each other with meaningless barnstars was not enough, now you can write an article about your buddies. Someone adds a criticism section, you slam them with a handy NPA ban.

It says that she'll attend a "medical college" named "Midwestern University (T-H-L)", which apparently specializes in osteopathy. I thought that osteopaths were former offensive-linemen who were relatively bright before too many football concussions and who do not have the hair to be preachers.

Re: 2016 Wikipedians of the Year
Oh Garfield would totally keep them. Its not an ignore all rules thing, its a bend the rules thing. If a wikipedia editor gets news coverage the bias is to creating an article on them. Then if the editor doesn't want the article, how many AfDs it takes to delete it is up for debate.
There's no reason wikipedia shouldn't name Wikipedians of the Year, its a good press opportunity. I'd rather a random wikipedian get a few thousand bucks once a year then most of what they waste money on.

I thought Earthy Astringent was referring to the mini-meme in some Wikipediocracy threads of posting doctored Garfield (T-H-L) strips with WP-related speech bubbles? (e.g. 1 and 2 and 3). Had never heard of GByrd (WMF) (T-C-L) before (Garfield Byrd, Chief of Finance and Administration, Wikimedia Foundation). Maybe Tarantino was being funny?
Milowent, how many of those Garfield cartoons did you do? I thought it was more than those three?

Here's another article about Emily. I suspect a lot of the abuse described therein came from the mentally ill Californian who's well-known to the foundation.
