FWIW, I didn't write Mr. Oscroft up for the book wiki. Even though he was a regular AN/I presence and a patroller, he was one of the more reasonable and stable individuals there, not habitually screaming for severed heads or stabbing backs over content issues. Yes, it's sad that Wikipedia's history concentrates on its worst members, but that seems to be generally true of most human history.

This is very bad news to me... Alan/Boing! had been one of those I was in contact with about The New Thing. I knew he wasn't too peppy about WP, but this sudden quit is a real shock...

I suppose you don't remember this from August 2013?
As usual, the excellent observations on Wikipedia behavior offers wisdom:
70. It is impossible to love again anything you have truly ceased to love.[14] Editors who return after retirement, or after a wearied or bitter departure, may edit again, but never with the same passion they once brought to the project. Each successive return will be with diminished dedication and shorter duration.

Re: Boing calls it quits
Personally I understand why they quite all too well. Wikipedia has turned into a toxic cesspool full of scumbags. There are too few quality editors and admins left and nobody wants to get rid of the shit heads and malcontents. When you have the Arbcom at the center enabling abusive behavior and advocating that admins block as many editors as possible with their new fastlane to editor banning discretionary sanction policy, broadly construed. Its a miracle more admins and editors don't call it quits.MZMcBride wrote:It's a real shock? To whom?Randy from Boise wrote:This is very bad news to me... Hopefully, he/she has found a more fulfilling hobby, like playing the guitar, marathon swimming, or volunteering at the soup kitchen. You know, something that actually contributes to better personal and societal quality of life than fighting over article content with anonymous clowns.Randy from Boise wrote:First off, welcome to Wikipediocracy, R3T.R3T wrote:Boing! said Zebedee (T-C-L) blocks himself with a edit summary of I don't want to be part of this community any more.

Re: Boing calls it quits
Alan (Boing) is a good bloke. That's why he was a bad fit for wikipedia.
I will mourn his passing, partly because of the following:
One day I showed my wife a discussion on a wikipedia talk page. (yeah, mistake...)
"You need to read this", I said, "it's interesting."
"Ok", she said: "...so you say this, and this bloke says that, fair enough, where's it leading?"
"Well", I said, "see here, where this guy really nails the point... He's pretty smart."
"You mean... the guy called 'Boing Said Zebedee?'" (quizzical look)
"Er, yeah, ok..."

Re: Boing calls it quits
Boing is only the latest in a long string of dedicated longterm contributors that has either been run out of Wikipedia or given up in frustration. The atmosphere is toxic the culture is abusive and no one there has any desire to change it, those who do are dealt with severely to send a message to the rest of the community not to try and change it.

(As an aside to MZMcBride, I recall I was somewhat less than appreciative of some advice you left me that time - with cooler hindsight, it's clear your thoughts were in good faith, and you have my apologies for my reaction.)MZMcBride wrote:As usual, the excellent observations on Wikipedia behavior offers wisdom:

Re: Boing calls it quits
Question: one theory of 'burnout' is that it is just that. People enjoy doing something for a bit, then they get tired, then something breaks, and they move on. Wikipedia is the same as it ever was.Boing! said Zebedee wrote:Hmm, a Wikipediocracy thread about me - I'm moved to make my first post here!

The other theory, more congenial to the residents here, is that Wikipedia is simply getting worse, gradually, day by day.
Which, or is it a mixture?
