Might be a little pricey for me, the jewelry on the orange one, the Starbucks water bottle holder on the other.

Last time I went on a protest march, admittedly in yuppie-hipster Santa Cruz, California, I was way under dressed and lacking in the necessary bejeweled qualities and quantities.

TIME OUT.

People's boring self-photos are not what I started this thread for, much less using them as an excuse to get jabs in at their subject.

Well, I guess there are probably a lot of boring selfies on commons. I am a little surprised at how much junk there is on commons. If you search any current events category, you can't actually find the useful information because of the junk.

However, I'l grant you that is probably not odd, just typical of the mentality there.

Well boo hoo. You really are something of a saint, in light of how Mattie No Mates jerked you around when he tried to have your WP profile pic deleted in a fit of vindictiveness.

But I'll play along, given that you're generally a cool customer. So, for the moment, let's not focus on our boy Matt's obvious conflict of interest regarding his many London Underground edits and his puerile sense of humour when describing his job on twitter but enjoy a lovely and educational picture from a WP article he has an interest in instead:

And another one:

There. That better? ;)

Brilliant combo of the selfie and the weird. I am always impressed when someone goes the extra mile to satisfy everyone.

Now, get me out of here.

Hah, that was uploaded by the same person (Corwin(T-C-F-L)) who took Commons File:Paul and Linda McCartney.jpg:

Image

Which is described as:
I took this Picture of Paul & Linda McCartney at the 1973 Academy Awards (which were presented April 2, 1974 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles) when Paul was nominated for "Live & Let Die." Paul & Linda walked up to the podium and Army Archerd started asking him questions on live TV. Paul then turned his head and stared directly at me, totally ignoring the interviewer, and giving me an eerie feeling - was he actually looking at me? I pulled the viewfinder of the camera away from my eye, I had no more film, having just taken this last frame of Paul & Linda, but he continued his penetrating stare. I was getting nervous, here was my idol, staring at me! Army valiantly kept asking questions of Paul, who continued his unblinking stare, keeping perfectly silent. Finally Linda would answer the question. This went on for five or six questions. Finally, Army dejectedly said "Well, thanks Paul" to which Paul suddenly turned to Army shaking his hand saying "Thank You, Army, great questions, you're the best, always love talking to you." Then he and Linda walked over near me and deliberatly turned their backs to me just as they got close, sidestepping in front of me. I guess Paul was feeling playful and decided to give a young man a thrill, it worked!

Notice they tried to make some of them spookier by shooting them in monochrome (gasp!) and in the dark (shock! horror!).

Give me a moonless night and no lights and I could make Disneyland look like the abandoned fairground in Carnival of Souls.

Great find. That same user (read, sockpuppet account), Falconilla Red Foreman (T-C-L), also uploaded File:Dirty Sanchez (sexual act).ogg (T-H-L), with a similarly amused-sounding woman doing a reading.

No explanation for the wreckage. You have to dig around to learn it was from an earthquake.

Another thing: punch the "Random" button a hundred times. The vast majority of these images are not used in any Wikipedia or other "official" WMF project content. Some of them are linked by the creators on their userpages or elsewhere. People continue to use Commons as a Flickr.

Look at this.
In 2001, specially commissioned scans of the bridge confirmed the existence within the fabric of the large central pier of a horse and cart, which had fallen into the cavity of the pier during construction. Until this time, it had not been certain at which bridge this accident had occurred.
There is no article on Wikipedia about this viaduct. The incident is mentioned in Glenfinnan Viaduct (T-H-L), where it didn't actually happen.

Someone care to figure out why? I give up.

Link to more info: link where oddly enough there are two slightly differing accounts on the same page.

The salient paragrpah:
In 2000, Professor Paxton and Radar World, commissioned by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, developed an innovative radar imaging technique which penetrated the 9 ft thick walls of this pier into its infilled cavity and identified the vertically positioned remains of a McAlpine horse and cart (behind the white spot in the view) which had accidentally fallen into the cavity a century earlier.
R Paxton and J Shipway, 2007.

Creative Commons licensed photo, too!

There was actually an edit war over the cropping between Nemo Bis and our own Michael Suarez, not to mention a deletion request on the grounds that it is out of scope and that it is a copyvio: "Even if we assumed he had the right to use the logo for his own company, there is no information about him having the right to relicense/sublicense it." I think this is worth a page in the book.

What nobody queried in the deletion discussion, actually, is whether the photographer transferred the copyright to Greg.

It's not a question of what I imagine. It would never occur to me to imagine that it was a copyvio because of the MyWikiBiz logo, but some people managed to think so, or say they did.

There are too many possibilities to list here.

Thanks for pointing that category out as it's a perfect example of people using Wikipedia as a personal Flickr. Many of the photos are of very minor WP editors, who (sometimes) use the pics on their userpages. Resource mismanagement at its purest!

As I see it, that's largely a side effect of MediaWiki not providing a user profile system, and implying that users have free rein to create whatever kind of page about themselves that they want. Another classic example of how the developers of the core application have failed over the course of many years to understand how non-technical users operate.
