That happens a lot. I imagine there are quite a large number of people who create accounts on Wikipedia and then never use them, just like on Facebook or Twitter.

I hadn't seen this thread in a few days, so I didn't have any idea what happened. I went to Wikipedia to see the page, and there's absolutely nothing there that would indicate what happened. No block notice, no explanation, nothing. If I didn't know about this site, I'd have no idea what went down.

If you were a casual user of Wikipedia and you had worked with an editor before, and went to their page to ask a question and you had to dig to find out they were blocked by ARBCOM with no details whatsoever, would that make you want to stick around? From the outside, LGR had only been blocked once before last year.

Of course, we know he's nuts, but the rank and file of WP don't. And because there's no transparency there, they won't unless they come here.

The thing with LGR is weird, but the issue with Qworty is that people couldn't stop adding on to the thing. Were it just the ban tag it would have been left with little objection from anyone, but some insisted on adding an extraneous block notice, and a list of links including the Salon article for no apparent reason other than to shame him as much as was possible. I imagine if they smacked LGR's page with a sock tag or a "blocked by ArbCom" tag it wouldn't be as big a deal. Not sure why they haven't done that.
