Warhammer and Wikipedians

Unread post by Anroth » Tue Jul 09, 2013 8:23 pm

I've copied these posts over from a members-only topic in case folks would like to discuss Warhammer 40K and Wikipedians. --Zoloft

The full quote is 'Only in death does duty end.' Its from Warhammer 40'000. A totalitarian universe where war is brutal and unceasing. (As the Space Wolves would say "War within, war without, war unending".) To combat 'outsiders' (the alien) or disruptive elements (the heretic) the Imperium of Man is ruled with an iron fist - its base citizens toil ceaselessly with no hope or dreams, mainly to fuel the war machine. Its elite fight constantly, while a chosen few live the life of luxury tended to by their robotic (servitor) servants. The Inquisition watch over everything, ruthlessly clamping down on anyone who questions or threatens the status quo, as a result all Inquisitors go bad in the end. Its not a question of if, just how much good work can they get done before they crash and burn. And over it all a desiccated corpse-emperor reigns, no physical power left, kept alive only by arcane machinery that no one understands, as a figurehead/object of fear/worship.

So nothing like wikipedia at all really...

Meanwhile, adherents of the game meticulously paint hundreds of figurines to build their armies for the next battle. Almost an obsession...

I find it kind of restful after a day at work to do something creative. My missus does things with plants & nature, I paint teeny tiny mini weapons of destruction. But I prefer to play the game rather than spend hours painting them, so my efforts are fair-to-good.

Generally though, WH fans fall into 4 types:

Those who like to collect - spend loads of money getting hundreds of models. Never manage to paint them. Hoarders rather than obsessives.
Those who like to paint - still collect a lot, but spend hours and hours painting one orc's arm to get the skin texture *just right*. The real obsessives of the habit.
Those who prefer to play the game - generally have one fairly rigid collection that doesnt change much. Once its painted its done.
Those weird ones who just like to read the books....

You folks would be shocked to learn how many "Wikipedians" are Warhammer fans. Probably in the thousands.

I've always found the Warhammer 40K fans, especially the 'painters,' to be interesting, often quietly industrious, detailed-oriented types.

The main Warhammer 40,000 (T-H-L) article has some issues recently, looks like it needs some gnoming...

I went to the talk page to see if I could find a few Warhammer Wikipedians, but the present discussions are all IPs.

So I dug through the talk page archives...

Ah, a story of blood, treachery, failed redemption, and the ruins of a glorious past.

Dramatis personae:
  • In the beginning, there was boyish enthusiasm, and a minimum of trolling... Differences were settled by arm-wrestling and light displays of competency.
  • The article was spun-off into many detailed articles, with lots of hard work, cheerfully provided by Wikipedian Warhammer fans.
  • Copyright and image Fair Use issues raised their heads, but were beaten down by fans.
  • Off-wiki semi-authoritative fan sites were linked, unlinked, and squabbled over.
  • SanchiTachi and socks had a nice little war with the fans, consuming a lot of their time.
  • In a ghastly purge, admins redirected and deleted most of the spun-off pages.
  • Wikia swept up the pieces.
  • Wailing and gnashing of teeth were kept to a minimum.
  • Interest in editing collapsed.
  • Protonk guided the main Warhammer 40K page to a Good Article status, but could not bring it to Featured Article.
  • The page is now comatose, a few IPs, like fruit flies, circling the remains.

I was half awake when I just looked at this and thought 'I didnt start a thread on warhammer did I?'

Currently there are some gnomes (possibly including myself) quietly working through the smaller articles before tackling the main one again. The general strategy when faced with an article that has..well...obsessed fans is to pick off the supporting stuff and surround the main article with higher quality work.

Its fairly slow going though. Fortunately unlike other fan-areas like say pokemon or general anime, most warhammer players (or collectors/painters, its fairly evenly split between those who game and those who like to work on the models) tend to be older and listen to reason. They also tend to already *have* all the rulebooks so dont feel the need to shove in every last bit of cruft. Plus there are some very extensive non-wikipedia wiki's.

There used to be articles on specific Chaos Gods, as well as various heroes and villains.

All that cruft is cut out.

I now mainly read about Warhammer. I did not collect much, as it is expensive.
