Calton, a longtime and regular Wikipedia editor and the subject of much discussion on WR, has been given a long block.
* * Thanks for whitesplaining that to the community. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward)(talk) 8:58 am, 7 March 2013, last Thursday (5 days ago) (UTC−8)
* * * What the "fuck" are you talking about?!?!? Jesus.... Carrite (talk)
Now ... you know... son, I've lived in the South. Born in the South, even. Down yondah, you bump into the nicest, most genteel white person a little too hard, and you will discover they were as a child given extensive readings from The Big Book of Ten Thousand Racist Epithets. The Devil's Advocate wrote:Lol . . . buckwheat. It is nice to know that there is a serious competitor with "cracker" for lamest racial slur ever. Getting indeffed for using that "insult" must be quite embarrassing.
He probably speaks Japanese better than me. I don't know if he ever goes to any of the Japanese WP meet-ups, if they have any.EricBarbour wrote:I've long wondered what the Japanese thought of him.
I trust that's directed at me.thekohser wrote:Sad how a 51-year-old man acts like a 20-year-old idiot on Wikipedia.
No, I was talking about Calton Bolick. Are you 51, too?Randy from Boise wrote:I trust that's directed at me.thekohser wrote:Sad how a 51-year-old man acts like a 20-year-old idiot on Wikipedia.
I will not allow nimrods to paint me into the corner of racism. I made a valid point, the Young White Male Hipster PC Sorts tried to play the race card on me, and I gave them the finger "No Personal Attacks" style.
Sorry if it offended your "mature" sensibilities...

Why a 20 year old? I suspect a 51 year old idiot isn't that different from a 20 year old one.thekohser wrote:Sad how a 51-year-old man acts like a 20-year-old idiot on Wikipedia.
Nonsense, we're much better at it.Outsider wrote:Why a 20 year old? I suspect a 51 year old idiot isn't that different from a 20 year old one.thekohser wrote:Sad how a 51-year-old man acts like a 20-year-old idiot on Wikipedia.
He's a good example of the "vested contributor" problem WP has. Even though he is really rude and nasty with his fellow editors, which would have gotten him banned if he was a newbie, because he has been around so long no one is willing to finally vote him off the island.EricBarbour wrote:Does anyone think I should write him up for the book wiki? He's a pretty minor character otherwise.
I'm not sure that's what it is. He was a dick when he was new, too. I think it's because he has tended to direct his vitriol toward "out of favor" contributors, like some pit bull of orthodoxy.Cla68 wrote:He's a good example of the "vested contributor" problem WP has. This is Wikipedia, not somewhere sensible. I'm inclined to say that in a sensible place he would never have been unblocked.everyking wrote:He's been unblocked, on the condition that he not abuse other users in edit summaries. I think it would have been more sensible to require that he not abuse other users anywhere.
From someone on his Facebook page (25 February 2022):
I regret to inform everyone that Cal passed away Friday evening, Japan time. Maybe it was around 7pm.
He had been in the hospital since midnight Wednesday, and intubated since mid-day Thursday for breathing difficulty due to non-Covid pneumonia. While still unconscious, he went into cardiac arrest, was revived once, then passed away a little later.
He became ill with influenza at the end of January, finally going to see a doctor at a local clinic on Jan 31, as he posted. When he passed, he had been feeling weak for weeks, despite one course of medication, and being declared negative for Covid-19.
The bad fall he mentions in this post happened because he lost consciousness as he was pedaling his bicycle home from Musashi Nakahara Station Doutour coffee shop, where he had been resting after taking care of some necessary business locally. A nearby convenience store camera recorded his fall and triggered the call to 119 (Japan's 911 service).
The police told Scott, Kenji, and me at the hospital last night that he may have injured his heart in the way fell onto his handlebars, and they are investigating the cause of death.
