Wikipedia Sucks email spam

If you have received invitations by email to join Wikipedia Sucks now, chances are they are part of a mass-mailing campaign by Bbb23sucks.

You don't need to make an announcement thread here every time you vandalise Wikipedia.

For a moment I considered making fun of this. But it isn't funny. This level of desperation is just sad.

Is there a record on who owns the most sockpuppet accounts in Wikipedia? Because I have a hunch that if the mass email spam campaign continues to the next day he stands a real chance of breaking the record.

He's also mailing people who already have accounts through WS - "Hi, we have seen dwindling activity lately on our forum. Do you think you could return to Wikipedia Sucks to keep our forum alive?"

Can he put an email beacon in that email to determine and geolocate recipients’ IP addresses? I’ve got to think the WMF / MediaWiki has made this impossible

No, MediaWiki emails are text-only.

I created well over a thousand, but there's no doubt that I'm nowhere near the top. Just look at someone like ISCHEKA or Grawp. They probably have well into the 10,000 of accounts. And spambots farms, which could have upwards of 100,000s.

Were you ever tempted to provide your reasoning to this guy?

Also, are you using the same Sender and Reply-To addresses for each mailing, or are you changing it each time? :dubious:

Is wikipedia's email system unthrottled?

Can one simply make an account and send out a million emails?

I've never tested it.

No. It's limited to five per day for non-autoconfirm users. However, I have a script that can automatically create thousands of accounts, solve the captchas, confirm their email addresses, and send out the emails.

No, it's so easy I didn't have to do it myself. There's literally a github repository that has existed for 3+ years that does it automatically: https://github.com/pauladj/ml-breaking- ... ia-captcha

@Bishonen: I came here from Wikipediocracy. I am rnu there. Ovsk (talk) 09:14, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Well, my question concerned your history on Wikipedia, not so much who you are elsewhere on the internet. Are you saying you have an account and an identity at Wikipediocracy, but have had none at Wikipedia before creating this account? Really? Bishonen | tålk 09:30, 8 January 2024 (UTC).

Yes. Many users of WPO have never had Wikipedia accounts. I have made a few minor edits as an IP, but this is my first account. Ovsk (talk) 09:33, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

It might be worth mentioning that there is a WPO user called "OvskMendov1" who claims responsibility for the recent Wikipedia Sucks Joe job. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:35, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Pro tip: If you want to pretend that you're me, don't claim that you're from Manchester on your user page when it is well known here that that is definitely not where I am from. You also may not want to come to the defense of an UNBLOCKABLE if you want any rational person acting in good faith* to believe you.

* Of course many Wikipedia admins don't fall into that category, so there's that.

Wikipedia Sucks joe job? Who would want to make Sucks look bad by spamming blocked users? On the other hand, spamming blocked users to attract them to Sucks seems like an equally pointless endeavour.

I don't know who specifically, but I'd be amazed if there wasn't a former Sucks editor who quit due to infighting and was sufficiently riled up by this to retaliate.

They don't want you to know. Sometimes when they lock an account, there will be several other accounts locked at the same time with a # associated with it so you know it's the same person. For example, #00021321 is Projects, also known as George Reeves Person. In this case, the wmf have never used #60627 in their logs before, so it's hard to tell.

On the plus side, 1700 socks does kind of make a mockery of their captcha :D

(Quite a few of which have been known to be ineffective for years anyway.)

Maybe the tech team might be prodded into getting off their fat lazy arses and doing something useful.

Just looking at the account names, you'd think a reasonably dumb filter would have made this dipshittery orders of magnitudes harder.

Is anyone in touch with Eric Barbour? Did Sucks host kick them off due to the spam? I have no doubt that one or two individual editors complained and I can see an admin sending them a note, but I wonder if WMF Legal got involved?

Eric, if you're reading, sorry that this happened. I know I never say anything nice about Sucks, but it, well, sucks that this happened to you because someone decided it would be a good idea to spam people.

They were under scheduled maintenance yesterday.
So they spammed thousands of people asking them to come to their forum then turned the server off?

Is anyone in touch with Eric Barbour? Did Sucks host kick them off due to the spam? I have no doubt that one or two individual editors complained and I can see an admin sending them a note, but I wonder if WMF Legal got involved?

Eric, if you're reading, sorry that this happened. I know I never say anything nice about Sucks, but it, well, sucks that this happened to you because someone decided it would be a good idea to spam people.

If it was up to me I would've made references to Justapedia as well. Maybe mention how Arbcom essentially failed to handle that case which involved an ice, a cat and a volunteer. Unfortunately I had some fallouts with the Bbb23sucks guy because of difference of opinions regarding the Oct 7 terrorist attacks.

Are you sure your fallouts at Sucks are nothing to do with the huge great tissues of lies you tried to spin over there, just like you did here, and at Wikipedia for years?

Why do we have so threads about Sucks? I don't get the attraction.
Well it can be sort of interesting and entertaining — like this spam operation.

Sucks is back up.
I checked yesterday evening and today, and all I get is a 403 error.

Not as far as I know, at least it wasn't blocked immediately prior to the site going down. I suppose it might be a UK IP thing, if the site's not set up properly.*

*Just checked with a VPN, and yes, it's my IP and not just the UK - UK VPN IPs seem fine. My registration there is fine, and not banned, blocked or anything - it's just the IP. Oh well.
