Freenode IRC "no longer considered secure" due to hostile takeover
AN notice Meta discussion
Apparently an Andrew Lee has completed a hostile takeover of Freenode IRC, and most of the Freenode staff have quit to form a new place, Libera Chat. The Wikipedians are scrambling around with what to do.

Who uses IRC? If you like the 1990s so much, why don't you go and live there?

If I could go back to the 90s, I would.Ritchie333 wrote: ↑Thu May 20, 2021 11:26 amWho uses IRC? If you like the 1990s so much, why don't you go and live there?

Re: Freenode IRC "no longer considered secure" due to hostile takeover
The WMF could easily host its own IRC server for Wikipedia related channels instead of relying on third parties. It's almost like they would prefer it to be hosted somewhere else, where they have no liability and the Universal Code of Conduct doesn't apply...

Re: Freenode IRC "no longer considered secure" due to hostile takeover
A couple mailing lists I'm on are full of frenzied discussion about this and I'm just tuning it out because I've never used IRC and don't plan to start, but I did take a moment to peruse the Freenode (T-H-L) article, it covers what's going on in some detail. The Lee guy sounds like a bit of a creep. Or possibly that's just what the former staffers want us to think so everyone will switch to the new network they suddenly have.

Guess they'll finally have to make the transition to AOL instant messenger...

So how many bitcoins do you have to pay this Korean guy to get the cabal's secret logs?

I guess a few satoshis, if the server kept logging of them?

Freenode hasn't been the same since Rob Levin died. This is just the final nail in the coffin.
