Now we're explicitly grouping topics by the people who are paying us.

The 2011-12 Australian women's goalball team has become the first Good Topic on English Wikipedia. The nomination can be seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: ... m/archive1 . Every article about the team members, the article about the coach and the article about their 2011-12 season earned Good Article status to achieve this.

I believe the next closest HOPAU topic to Good Topic would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Para-alpin ... sification with a number of articles about the specific classifications having become good and the main article having become good. The challenge after that would be to get the rest and to elevate B1 (classification), B2 (classification) and B3 (classification) to Good Article. As this encompasses more sports, it is a bit harder to do. Assistance on improving those articles might be really fantastic with the 2014 Winter Paralympics coming up and those articles being used during that period. We also should have pictures of competitors from everyone of those classes to use in those articles.

Sincerely,
Laura Hale

Hey,

With assistance from Hawkeye7 and a few other contributors, I've been hard at work improving articles related to Paralympic winter sport.

The following articles have passed GA:
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Para-alpine_skiing
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Para-alpin ... sification

The following articles have been nominated for GA:
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Para-Nordic skiing classification
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW1_(classification)
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW2_(classification)
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW5/7
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW10
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW3_(classification)
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW11
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW12
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW9

The following articles have appeared at DYK:
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Para-alpine_skiing
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outrigger_ski
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LW5/7

The following articles have been nominated for DYK:
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_Dallas
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Bor
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissa_Perrine

We're working on taking the rest of the para-alpine skiing classification articles to GA, creating articles about members of the 2010 Winter Paralympic team that haven't been created yet (they all appear to meet WP:GNG), improving existing articles about 2010 Winter Paralympians, working on taking these articles to GA, creating articles about additional ski-equipment like outrigger ski.

Sincerely,
Laura Hale

26 September 2012: A University of Canberra PhD student has recently returned to Australia after working as a reporter for Wikinews at the Paralympic Games in London.

Laura Hale has been involved in Wikinews since December last year and was driven to cover the Paralympics by her love of sport.

“The Paralympics interest me because I love sport, and because you feel like you can make a difference as a reporter and historian when documenting the Paralympic movement. I also wanted to report on it because the level of sport is spectacular,” Ms Hale said.

She also hoped her writing might encourage other people with disability to take part in sporting activities.

“People with disabilities may be inspired by learning more about others involved, they could then work to improve their own health by becoming involved with sport themselves,” she said.

One of her coverage highlights was interviewing Trischa Zorn, who made history when she won her 55th Paralympic medal in swimming.

Ms Hale said thanks to the support from the Faculty of Arts & Design and the University she was able to cover the Paralympics.

“I had the opportunity to do the Paralympic project because people in my department believed in my work and assisted in providing this opportunity,” she said.

Ms Hale completed her PhD at the University of Canberra in June. Her work at the Games interrelated with her thesis topic on the 'demographic and social characteristics of Australian sport fans online in response to events' as she said she “applied some of the methodologies in her research for the Games”.

Ms Hale said the experience also helped her discover options for her future.

“This confirms there are paths available to do work I find meaningful to benefit women and people with disabilities by drawing attention to the fantastic things they do, things that have wider implications for health and welfare in greater society.”

Laura

Thanks for this informative report.

This week I’m giving a talk to the Australasian Sport Information Network (AUSPIN) on my experiences in using Wikipedia as an editor and information professional (librarian). I will forward to HOPAU email list a copy of the presentation..

Wikipedia is definitely starting to become a creditable source in the sport realm but users need to understand its deficiencies.

Cheers

Classification articles. The last bastion of the grifter!
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searc ... SoFje9na4J
Laura Hale

9/10/12

I haven't gotten the complete stats yet, but I found two specific classification articles with huge views with roughly 100,000 views between TWO specific classification articles including http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/T38_(classification) and http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/T37_(classification) . If the classification articles, when combined, aren't between 500,000 and 600,000 views, I will eat my hat. Because WOW. Seriously. Just mind boggling the views these articles got.

We'll try to get a better stat break down when we get back. Just need time.

Wikinews wise, we published 70 stories.

I think that the full set of stats for articles created through this project will be mind-boggling and look forward to seeing them in due course.

Once again, to Laura, Ross, and everyone involved in the program, congratulations on an amazing job. In Australia, Greg, Tara and Graham in particular have put in so many hours to update articles (with John's support) and the legacy of this work is hard to measure - it is significant and world-leading!

Elizabeth, Tara and Chris have almost completed consolidating the full lists of Aussie medallists - so we are in good shape.

There is still much to be done, but your contributions have been amazing and are very much appreciated. Almost time for another workshop to look at where we go next and recognise what has been done!

Page views were some sort of performance metric between the grifters and their sponsors, HOPAU.

History of the Australian Paralympics Movement ›
2012 Australian Paralympians to Wikipedia's Front Page during the Games

Laura Hale
7/6/12
Hi,

Long time, no see. Prior to the start of the Paralympic Games, it would be great to have as many articles about Australia's Paralympic team written before and thus eligible for Wikipedia's front page during the Games themselves. If this is done in advance of the Games, it makes it easier to maintain during the Games themselves and increases the chances random people will come in an improve the articles.

I'd really, really, really like to see as many of the 2012 Paralympic team on the front page of English Wikipedia as possible, especially as there will have been over 50 (maybe as high as 100) Australian Olympians on the front page.

I'm organising these efforts at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Laura ... ralympians . The articles need to be created in userspace for several reasons. It prevents them from being deleted before article notability has been established and it gives us more time to write the article before its eligibility for front page inclusion disappears. Please do not create these articles on the main space. Please edit them in my user space. I've mass created "stubs" that should assist people in formatting an infobox, etc. To get an article front page ready, the following needs to be done:

1. Find at least four newspaper sources for each article.
2. Make the article at least 1,500 characters of prose.
3. Completely source each article with inline citations.

If you work on an article, you will get credit on your user talk page for having contributed to the article. It feels really good to see your hard work recognised on Wikipedia's front page. Do not worry about properly formatting your sources. If you do <ref>http://newspaperurltoexactarticle.com</ref> , I can fix the citation. Just cite everything. :) I'll take care of the nominating of the article and move each article over as those three things are done.

The following is a list of 2012 Australian Paralympian articles I have created stubs for on my user page that I would like assistance with:
<list snipped>
Some more interesting, if apparently unethical, connections forming...

Laura,

Wow – it would be a major achievement to have all of these articles written and ready to go before the Games!

One other area that I think needs definitely to be addressed are the articles on classification, as previously discussed through this forum.

I have been in touch with the IPC about this and received a somewhat cryptic response. In essence, it seems that the IPC is very interested in developing a relationship with the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects, but not until after the 2012 Games. It would also seem that, although there is an expressed intention, the IPC will not be in a position to assist in addressing articles about classification in any detail at present.

I have spoken to our classification manager – Gen McMahon - and she is available to assist in upgrading the articles on classification. I also agree with Roger that the work he has done will form a good starting point. This is definitely a topic of global interest, because the classification rules and principles are the same in every language and for every Wikipedia audience.

I will follow this up with Gen and we will suggest ways that this might work. My initial thought is that it is the perfect topic for a one day workshop – maybe a combination of online and physical – if Gen is available between now and the Games.

What do others think?

Regards,

TN
I think this explains why Laura Hale lost her mind on Fram when he was critiquing the Classification articles.

Well, more coordination that started off wiki
http://www.hopau.paralympic.org.au/2011 ... s.html?m=1
Tuesday, July 5, 2011
What's already on the wikis?
In May we commissioned Laura Hale to survey the Wikimedia Foundation projects for existing content, authors and statistical data relating to the Australian Paralympic movement. Laura completed the survey across the English Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikimedia Commons, Wikinews, Wikiquotes and Wikisource. We don't as yet have any knowledge of what is going on in other language projects. Graham Pearce checked Laura's work to see if he thought it was missing anything, and feels it caught all he would expect to find.

In all, Laura found 62 articles existing in the English Wikipedia as of 31 May 2011, 12 articles on Wiktionary, 228 media files on Wikimedia Commons, 1 article on Wikinews, 4 articles on Wikiquote, and 1 article of Wikisource.

At the very least, we can use these primary statistics to measure the over all impact of this project. But looking deeper, Laura's work gives us some clues as to whether an existing or potential editing community exists across the projects.

Based on Laura's survey of English Wikipedia, we can see that there are 6 users who have initiated more than 3 new Wikipedia articles that relate to Australia at the Paralympics. Based on that information, we will make contact with those users, tell them about our project, invite them to participate, and offer them library support for accessing information and media that might help them edit more pages relating to Australia at the Paralympics. We're aiming to begin this outreach work in mid July.

If one looks at Maria Sefidari Huici's commons contributions, it seems she developed a deep interest in Paralympic skiers right around February 2013.

Maria Sefidari Huici appears to be in on Laura Hale's grift.

Hmmm...Where were those files used?

Let's take the first one...

Maria Sefidari Huici was collaborating with Laura Hale in February 2013 on a paid, conflict-of-interest editing project.

Which gives the utter fucking lie to this little kabuki exchange
Spanish translations

Laura, I hope to close the AN discussion about you. In that discussion, you indicated a willingness to keep your translated-from-Spanish drafts in a sandbox area until they are vetted by someone competent in Spanish. Have you found a corps of willing translation helpers (either in the Wikipedia community or in your real life in Spain)? --Orlady (talk) 05:06, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

I can do it. It's one of the most impressive efforts I have ever seen in Wikipedia, and it deserves full cooperation. Laura, just ping me when you need me to check something. Cheers. Raystorm (¿Sí?) 06:34, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

I would accept @Raystorm: as a person supervising my Spanish work on English Wikipedia. --LauraHale (talk) 06:36, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
A full year after they were already working together on Laura's grift.
Other inline resources show conclusivelly that Laura Hale was in Madrid with Maria Sefidari Huici on January 30, 2014.
Keep in mind that this intervention by Maria Sefidari Huici got Laura Hale off the hook for creating garbage articles in Spanish with Google translate.

When Fram's case went up the chain from Trust and Safety to Katherine Maher and Maria Sefidari Huici confirmed her public recusal, that wasn't enough.
Maria Sefidari Huici KNEW FOR A FACT that the case against Fram was built on lies, corruption and nepotism and she said nothing.
Maria Sefidari Huici has a fiduciary duty to the Wikimedia Foundation as an officer not to lie by omission about material facts in a case that could engender a legal liability onto the WMF.

Someone needs to talk to the board and legal at this point.
WMF should get outside counsel to review this situation.

Corrupt.
As.
Fuck.
Hello, John. John, hello. You're the one soul I would come up here to collect myself.

Maria Sefidari Huici appears to be in on Laura Hale's grift.
Remember, Maria and Laura argued that the WMF should fund their travels to the Ski Competition so as to avoid creating a COI. The grant application reported that Laura Hale had opened conversations with the Spanish Paralympic Committee on January 15, 2013 about a possible Wikipedian-in-Residence (which started later that summer.) So, this work was on WMF's dime, but was motivated by a desire to get the Spanish Paralympic Committee to create the position. During this time, Maria "also served as a member of the IEG Committee for the first 2013 round."

An ethical person would have advised the Spanish Paralympic Committee to negotiate a partnership agreement with the WMF and to advertise the WiR opening to all interested Wikipedians to get a variety of applicants. But Maria set up the WMF grant to give Laura an inside track to this WiR conveniently located in Madrid. Raystorm wrote and submitted the grant application for this travel. a bargain at only 1035 euros
(We have not asked for any funding to any national Paralympic committee or the IPC for assistance for this. Granting this budget request would be important in order to avoid any accusations of COI by going elsewhere for funding assistance, or self-funding leading to accusations of COI. This is vitally important in light of the Gibraltarpedia situation.)
I guess my ethical standards are backwards. Could someone please explain how "self-funding" a trip to a ski competition would lead to "accusations of COI"? Conversely, taking money and press credentials from the WMF to make this coverage of the World Paralympic Skiing Championship possible is not creating an actual COI?

All of this was in the context of 1) the Australian Paralympic gig ending on 12/31/2012 with the project moving from Laura's University of Canberra to the University of Queensland. 2) Laura's faculty advisor being fired from the University of Canberra. 3) enWP struggling over the notability requirements for BLPs of Paralympic Athletes (hint medal winners of World Championship and the Paralympic Games are notable, everyone else probably not.) and 4) A real scandal and trial for a Spanish Paralympic leader. On October 13, 2013, a Madrid court fined the leader of the intellectually disabled federation €5,400 (£4,600) and ordered him to return €142,355 (£120,500) in government subsidies which the federation received for the athletes without disabilities. Earlier, the Spanish ID Basketball team had to return its Paralympic gold medal. So, its nice to see the types of people Maria and Laura want for our partners.

Performance Metrics vs. Eventualism
Many people believe that there is no deadline in editing WP and that eventually everything will become quality reference material because crowd sourcing works in the long run. However, when you pay someone for performance, you want results in terms of number of articles created, page views, DYKs, DYKs on special days tied to events, GAs, FAs etc. These performance metrics cause tension between the paid editors and the volunteers who process DYK. GA, FA and even AfDs. It is the battle of the trophy/bounty hunters vs. the WP establishment (unless you get your team to also process the DYK, GA and AfDs on a fast track basis).

As you know, LauraHale, Hawkeye7 and Bidgee travelled from Australia to Colorado in December 2012 to cover the IPC Nor Am Cup. At this point, LH and Hawkeye7 had just lost their bid to take over the WMAU and Laura's thesis supervisor had announced that he was being fired from the University of Canberra. The funding of the Australian Paralympic Committee history was ending on 12/31/12. Instead of trying to finish off the history (the research for which was never really started), they decided to travel during their last month. They had applied to the WMAU for funding, bought their plane tickets and only discovered en route that the WMAU did not want to fund the trip. So they went on their own dime but with Wikinews credentials.

Nonetheless, Laura Hale wrote this report which she uploaded in Spain. The report documents that she produced 19 wikinews articles (that gained between 100 and 500 page views), 18 DYKs, and 24 new articles. She then used that report in justification for a Wikimedia-in-Residence position with the Spanish Paralympic Committee and in support of her grant to attend the Paralympic World Alpine Skiing Championships. Their ski "classification articles" were all designated GA, and they even obtained a "good topic" for that set of GAs. However, most of the articles were later stripped of their GAs (e.g., by Fram linkhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:LW6/8/GA2[/link]), and they then lost their good topic status as well. linkhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia ... n/archive1[/link]

In the end, the history project (and associated funding) was transferred to the University of Queensland, and Laura got her WiR with the Spanish Paralympic Committee. She eventually completed her thesis under a different advisor.

I think the La Molina trip is a key piece in all of this. It's all laid out in the grant applicatiion - this was intended to be the first of more Wikinews paralympics boondoggles.
Raystorm wrote:This is a budget request for two Wikimedians (Raystorm and LauraHale) to attend the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiiing World Championships at La Molina, Spain. Attending this event as accredited media is key to developing the Australian Paralympic history project on a global level by creating a case study for a national sport organization outside Australia, and aids in getting a non-Australian Wikipedian accredited to attend the Sochi Paralympics. The request follows the availability of media accreditation announced on Monday, 14 January, and a meeting set up by LauraHale with Comité Paralímpico Español regarding developing a similar programme in Spain on Tuesday, 15 January, in Madrid. CPE agreed to facilitate media accreditation for this event to save time.
This grant will set us up for the Sochi paralynpics.
Raystorm wrote:Historically, the HOPAU project has led to increase user participation with a number of new female contributors, a mention on the floor of the Australian Parliament, increased media and student use of Wikipedia for research purposes, 1 million page views on English Wikipedia during the Paralympic project, a write up in the University of Canberra’s university magazine profiling Laura Hale, image donations to Commons used across multiple projects, mentions of content by Paralympics and the International Paralympic Committee on Twitter, encouraging other national groups to improve related content, increased participation on Wikinews and increased activity in covering disability related issues and sensitivity in making Wikipedia more disability friendly. While the same cannot be guaranteed as a direct outcome from this event, by providing a case study for use by the Comité Paralímpico Español, similar goals could be accomplished when institutional support can be put behind it like the HOPAU GLAM programme enjoys with the Australian Paralympic Committee.
This is going to convince the Spanish equivalent of the HOPAU to give us funding.

Wikinews:GLAM/Comité Paralímpico Español

A GLAM relationship exists with the Comité Paralímpico Español and a Wikinews contributor, Laura Hale, who is serving as a Wikipedian in residence. The purpose of this residency is to engage the Spanish Paralympic community by showing how they can contribute to Wikipedia and Wikinews projects, and to Commons. One of the benefits of this relationship is it provides opportunities, through inside contacts, to cover sporting events for Wikinews and build on the success of the Australian efforts.
Immediately after that, Australian article edits go to zero and Spanish article edits and creation skyrocket.

Metrics and program effectiveness

There is an IRC meeting at wikimedia-office at 4pm UTC dealing with metrics and program effectiveness. There is also the Wikimedia_Chapters_Association/Journal. I was wondering if you could promote a few things in these? They include meta:User:LauraHale/Wikinews Content Import Analysis, Research:Wikinews Review Analysis and File:Spanish competitors at the IPC Athletics World Championships.pdf. These all involve research and metrics related to Wikinews. I really suck at self promotion. Beyond that, any cross movement attention for our project and TWG is good for them. It normalizes them and makes them seem less ugly step child. It also highlights all the good things we are actually doing. And yeah, just nervous about doing it myself. If you want any research done related to your own Wikinews interests, let me know what general area and I can try to see about doing it.--LauraHale (talk) 17:41, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

I have changed it to indef after talking to people in the Stewards chatroom, and going to meta and the WMF wiki to look at the privacy implications regarding sending another person's extremely personal information without consent to people not identified with the Foundation. This behavior goes beyond disruption, especially when done twice. You cannot share another person's passport information without their consent. --LauraHale (talk) 07:37, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

She edit's wikinews through June 2014, goes on a two year hiatus, has one last spurt Sep 2016 and then is gone forever.

Why?

Question Laura, do you accept the nomination? --Patrick M (TUFKAAP) (talk) 17:22, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I accept. --20:44, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Question As with most nominations and our highly informal vetting process... we must ask: What are your plans for world domination? --Patrick M (TUFKAAP) (talk) 17:41, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
World domination starts with Australia and then moves eastward towards New Zealand. If I can't get a visa to stay in Australia, I'd like to get a kickstart grant and do Wikinews coverage on Oceania because I love the region and we don't get enough news. --LauraHale (talk) 04:50, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Votes
Support of course, as nom. --Patrick M (TUFKAAP) (talk) 17:22, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
Assuming acceptance, support. Shouldn't need to go into great detail to justify this, Laura 'fits' with the Wikinews community and by-and-large has a clue what news is. I'd trust her with mob, bucket, and spam-tenderizing ban-hammer. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:03, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

So, Daneil Tom got indeffed.
Here's why
https://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?tit ... ockpuppets
See exactly what a tyrant Laura Hale is when she's got a bit of power.
I read the DanielTom stuff before and it is just silly, and a bad case of punching down. DanielTom claimed that he and his brother both had accounts but edited from the same house. Hence, the second account was not a sock. On his own, DanielTom sent LH a scan of his passport to prove that his name is different than his brother's. Instead of taking the facts at face value and reversing her position, Laura Hale then goes after DanielTom for sending his passport information in an email, and tries to have DanielTom global blocked, but that was declined. Laura Hale wants DanielTom blocked on wikinews. DanielTom does not want to be locally blocked on multiple projects to avoid a global ban, but he does not want to become a wikinews editor. Laura Hale says that he has to become a wikinews editor in order to clear up the wikinews block. Very sad and manipulative.

More data to disprove the translation mentorship lie
https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Talk:Diego ... eal_Madrid
Talk:Diego Costa scores Atlético Madrid's winning goal against Real Madrid

Journalist notes

I attended this game last night with Raystorm. There was a lot of local media hype about the game on Spanish television, and the expectation was that Real Madrid would win given that they just do not lose at home and do not lose to this team.

Prior to the goal, Real Madrid had a good game going in terms of making passes and controlling possession of the ball. This was mentioned by fans near me in the stands. Following the goal, fans expressed unhappiness loudly. It looked like it was because a Real Madrid player was out of position. Anyway, Real Madrid started to lose the possession game. Atlético shut down the passing lane. This led to Atlético getting more possession. Atlético players also started falling over more. According to Raystorm and another person I talked to, two or three Atlético players have a reputation for flopping and instigating drama with the other team. 10 and 19 for Atlético were two that fell over several times. It was like they went for the ball, missed and then stayed on the ground rolling around. This slowed down the game. Real Madrid fans were shouting at Atlético players because the players were rolling around on the ground and then would miraculously get up and start to run. The shouts actually included the Spanish word for miracle and run. Most of this chanting was originating from the ultras section. Real Madrid also had problems with setting up plays. They would take a long time to set up a play, take the ball further and further back but then when they started their play going forward, a bad pass would lead to a turn over in the ball.

I believe I've found some of the aftermath from whatever falling out happened between Laura Hale and Ross Mallett aka Hawkeye7.
https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/User_talk: ... _in_Sydney

After saying that Fram was mean to her, Laura Hale's utter hypocrisy is on full display.

Revision 1917676 of this article has been reviewed by LauraHale (talk · contribs) and found not ready at 00:57, 6 June 2013 (UTC).

NPOV: Symbol abstain vote.svg Not reviewed. Please address other issues.
Style: Symbol abstain vote.svg Not reviewed. Please address other issues.

Comments by reviewer: Well, that was a rather disappointing effort. As an experienced, accredited Wikinews reporter with over 30 articles to your credit, the concept of newsworthiness and how to write an article should be pretty clear. If you need assistance, help pages are there for you but you need to address feedback quickly, and submit articles with the idea that they will have to go through multiple review iterations. Each time this happens, it means other reviewers outside the initial reviewer will be less likely to review your article AND newsworthiness becomes an increasing problem.

This article will not be ready to be published any time soon. It would need almost a complete refocus highlighting this as an interview story first, covering the opening of the basketball season second, and probably looking ahead to the second round in the competition. This is the only possible way to save it, and at this point, it should be started over as new article. The style guide should be consulted. The general help should be consulted. The sources should be formatted properly. The original reporting notes should be posted to the talk page, unless there is a hugely pressing need to post them to scoop.
Odd that Laura Hale is such a whiny shit about Fram calling her out on her utter fail brigade of Paralympian articles...

Ah, the disruptive play... Nice.
As a clarification on the disappointing note, resubmitting without making any changes is considered disruptive. Please see Wikinews:Newsworthiness for more information. --LauraHale (talk) 01:06, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
Full on bully mode!
I would humbly suggest that the apology owed here it not by pi zero, but by you. Wikinews has a problem with a lack of available reviewers. As an experienced, accredited Wikinews reporter, you should be aware of that. Given that, you should also be aware that the best possible way to get an article through the review process is to have it meet all the publishing criteria. Your initial submission did not even have that. Honestly, you should know better. You wasted valuable time of reviewers by having fundamental mistakes.

After wasting reviewer time by not submitting material that would easily get passed, you treated Wikinews like Wikipedia. You argued with the reviewer. You questioned the reviewer. You submitted work without making changes required. Worst of all, instead of coming here to fix the problems, you failed to try to save your article. You have spent the past several days arguing. There is no article on round 2 preview that highlights the interviews you did. There is no round 2 preview article that refers to the first round. You are not here to write news.

Do you want to apologize to the community for wasting our time? It would be much appreciated, because I can assure you: pi zero and I both would rather be reviewing your new article than reading your requests for an undeserved apology. --LauraHale (talk) 22:18, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
THE REVIEWER SHALL NOT BE QUESTIONED!
Especially when it is Laura Hale!
Strong shades of FanFiction days.

You made that poor guy apologize?!
After he let you stay at his house for years rent free?
What an ungrateful shitheel.
I do wish to apologise to the community for wasting their time. I am painfully aware of the acute shortage of reviewers. I honestly thought that the article was as good as I could make it, and tried to make all the requested changes. Having lost a day of work, I did not have any time to spare for three days. However I do have some time now, and will try to put another article together. I seems risky though; I have never seen a Wikinews article about a future event before. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:41, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
For Laura to have run to Trust and Safety about Fram's reviewing of her articles is rich fare indeed.
This is what a little power does to Laura Hale.
Every.
Single.
Time.

The more I see, the more I think that Hawkeye7 probably was innocent and got caught up in her manipulations and mechanization. He really does seem to be kind of clueless when he defends her, and this up above is downright damned abusive on Laura's part. Go figure. The gaslighting and the way she turned around and tried to tear him down as a person. Like-- damn.

Considering she can't write her way out of a wet paper bag, I dunno what right she has to pretend to be able to review anything.

Things don't get any better as Laura Hale is exceptionally good at holding a grudge and paying out revenge.
Here, she let's her minions do the knife work.
https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:A ... 7/Archive2

Some ugly, ugly stuff here.
Comment Given that much of the circumstances surrounding accreditation being resigned were non-public, and are now salient to this request for accreditation to be restored, what are you prepared to say regarding the circumstances leading up to that resignation? In particular, how such might relate to representing Wikinews in a professional manner? --Brian McNeil / talk 12:23, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

I feel constrained in what I can say. It was not related to my Wikinews activities online or offline in any way whatsoever. I understand that some have taken my resignation as reflecting poorly on Wikinews, as being proof of their criticism of Wikinews as being run by a small clique for its own benefit, but it was not my intent that my resignation should be damaging to Wikinews. I can assure you that if my accreditation is restored, nothing will prevent me from representing Wikinews in a professional manner. Hawkeye7 (talk) 17:11, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Something happened that caused a resignation. It appears to have happened off-wiki; no explanation was given on-wiki, as a duty to the community. When re-applying, not only it wasn't mentioned in the application, it was also not presented in an answer to a direct question further than «I'm sure it would not happen again». The repeated lack of open-minded approach and frankness is disturbing. Gryllida 23:51, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes, it was completely off-wiki, and completely unrelated to Wikinews. It's related to a sadly deteriorated personal relationship with another person. I simply asked a third person and how my former friend was doing, something that many, many people asked me. (I would say I did not know.) The whole purpose of the Wikimania in Hong Kong was meeting people and putting faces to names known only online. I introduced myself to many people, and many introduced themselves to me. I had no reason to believe that this person would be anything but friendly to me, and I was not trying to pry for information. Although I identified myself three times by name and online userid, not to mention was wearing an id card around my neck, this person did not recognise either. This happens sometimes. I then gave a detailed description of my relationship with my former friend, and was told that my former friend would not like us talking. We therefore shut the conversation down. I later received an email from PiZero, saying that my former friend had complained to ArbCom, and he suggested that in view of the fact that Wikinews was under attack at the time, that I consider resigning my accreditation to avoid a public fuss. This came as an unpleasant surprise to me, as I failed to see how it was a matter for ArbCom. Nonetheless, I chose to do so, and asked him to convey my apologies. It was not related to my Wikinews activities online or offline in any way whatsoever. Hawkeye7 (talk) 00:39, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
Wikimania Hong Kong was 7–11 August 2013

So, Laura has a habit of reporting things to ARBCOM... Interesting...

Laura also has a habit of spreading nasty rumors about...
I'm aware of several off-wiki things we're talking about (okay, talking around), none of which I would describe as completely unrelated to Wikinews. --Pi zero (talk) 01:30, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
Laura has Pi Zero as a personal attack dog. Nice.
Laura's meal ticket was under threat.
Now, where have we seen similar behavior?
It was Pi zero's judgement call, but I accepted it. It came at a time when Wikinews was under attack by a group of people from Wikipedia over whether the project was worthwhile and viable. Jimmy Wales had just given a speech where he had announced that he was considering what should be done. (This was one of the reasons why I prompted to talk to the person referred to above.) Remember that there were large numbers of Wikimedians together in an environment where rumours and accusations could travel very quickly. Hawkeye7 (talk) 19:30, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I conveyed to Hawkeye7 a request that he resign his special privileges (admin and accreditation). Though I've studiously avoided judgement calls on all this (on the theory that regardless of whether I'd be asked to recuse myself from an ArbCom case, I should conduct myself as a neutral Arb anyway), I admit I felt his resignation would be preferable to what would likely ensue otherwise. It may well be that his decision to comply with the request was influenced by the anti-Wikinews campaign (that would be the one based on false claims about what Wikinews's core mission is), and by Jimmy's speech. However, I think it probable the request would have been made without the campaign or the speech. --Pi zero (talk) 20:52, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Aaaaaand, Pi Zero hereby wins his very own Vigilant Brand Colonscopy(tm) coupon...
Game on, fucker.
Oppose The circumstances surrounding resignation involved things of various natures with potential to reflect poorly on Wikinews if Wikinews were extending special status such as accreditation. I've been given to understand Hawkeye7 did not perceive the difficulty, which offers no reason to expect the difficulty not to recur. --Pi zero (talk) 18:16, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
But, the MOST interesting on this page is this.
Oppose "Sadly deteriorated" during the course of a Wikinews accreditated original reporting event. Extremely relevant. Raystorm (talk) 08:25, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
Oh, honey...

And she's got an oversighted comment on this particular Request for Accreditation.

Laura's minions never forget
https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:A ... s/Hawkeye7
Unsuccessful; as this has been open a good long time, with 50% opposition from veteran Wikinewsies, it's not realistically going to turn into a positive decision. --Pi zero (talk) 18:27, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
Laura's minions never forgive
Question What do you believe has changed since your last request? --Pi zero (talk) 22:05, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Make the poor man beg. Shame him. Humiliate him.
Time has passed. People have moved on. I have demonstrated my good faith and good works. I meet all the stated requirements for accreditation in the Wikinews:Accreditation policy Hawkeye7 (talk) 01:12, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
Make it worse. Make him think there might be a chance.
Rereading the discussion from your last application, I see a lot of disbelief of fault on your part. And now what you say is "People have moved on"? I read that as saying you hope the people who remember have left. The implication being that you see the failure of that application as being other people's fault rather than yours. --Pi zero (talk) 01:57, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
Bring in another minion to mock him mercilessly.
Comment OK, I'm going to say a few things and then I'm going to render my vote. Several weeks back, you put this at PiZero's page, when he reminded you that you can submit here without accreditation: "I cannot. I must have accreditation to attend events. Without Wikinews accreditation, I have had to accept accreditation from another organisation. And that means I then cannot post to Wikinews at all." I weighed in (neutrally, mind you) on your last request for accreditation....I commented there (and many other places, at other times) that humility is held in high regard here. Over the past 15 months, you've made very few general edits, assisted with cleanup or anything of that ilk. OK...I won't prattle on down that lane too far, but it's still a fact.

So, true, ok....you can't prance around AS A JOURNALIST at public events in Australia without accreditation. Your quote: "I must have accreditation to attend events." No you don't. You must have accreditation to attend events as AN ACCREDITED JOURNALIST.....to wear your pretty little badge and sit in the media tent etc. etc. So, without all that: You attend an event. Bob and Bill are racing. Bob runs faster than Bill. Bill trips, falls gets hurt and bleeds. Bob wins. The crowd cheers, 'We still love you, Bill.' The medics run onto the field and attend to Bill. You happen to be sitting next to Bill's friend, whom you tell you're working on an article to post online about the race (you state this honestly to the friend). He says, with tears in his eyes, "Bill is the greatest bloke ever. He's worked so hard. I'm just gutted over this loss." You come here, write all that down and submit it. THAT'S JOURNALISM!!! Are you telling me, that in your country, if you did that, police would break down your door and haul you away to jail in the middle of the night?! I'm asking you, seriously...not rhetorically. You don't need accreditation to do that stuff....not here!!! This is CITIZEN JOURNALISM. Ok, so some countries won't give you a badge without a vouching organisation....I get that now (it took me a while to understand that). But I have read a few lines about laws in other countries....and people have blogs, they have Facebook pages etc. If you see/hear something, can't you use that in an article? People come here, seeking the glory but don't want to sacrifice their guts....and it's just annoying. (See, I went down that lane, even though I wasn't going to.) --Bddpaux (talk) 18:22, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
Deny him anyway. Make him suffer.
Oppose --Pi zero (talk) 01:06, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Based on the past history, there appears to be a serious risk Hawkeye7 could become involved in some incident that, if they're accredited, could seriously mar our public image. I have never seen any reason to think they understood what the problem was in the first place, nor that they have come to understand it any better since, which strongly supports concern of repeat incidents. To me, that's a showstopper, trumping all other considerations; we must not accredit someone known to be a serious risk of besmirching our good name. Frankly, even if I accepted the nominee's claims of being unable to contribute at all without accreditation, it would only me sadder about the importance of not accrediting them. (I agree with BRS about the cliché.) --Pi zero (talk) 22:30, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Completely unrelated, I'm sure, but as it happens,Maria Sefidari was at Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong. There's ample photographic evidence. Perhaps she would know who Hawkeye7 was talking to...?

Sorry, the type got all big for some reason. Oops.

Laura Hale's horrific abuse of Hawkeye7 is a textbook example of the comorbidity of sociopathy and sadism.

A blast from the past.

Generally speaking, Wikimedians are sincere in their belief in the awesomeness of Wikipedia and in their belief that Wikipedia has been, is, and will continue to be a great asset to mankind. Indeed, this belief is held on faith; Brandon's dragonslaying epic is clear evidence of that. The Wikimedian belief in the awesomeness of Wikipedia is nonrational and cannot be explained or refuted rationally. The religious belief in the greatness of Wikipedia actually blinds them from seeing the imperfections in Wikipedia. Axiomatically, any imperfection found in Wikipedia is simply something that hasn't been fixed yet, and thus does not detract from the awesomeness of Wikipedia.

So, in a sense they do "care" about the encyclopedia, but their "care" doesn't extend to actually doing anything to improve its quality in the sense that a reasonable person would care about. Their idea of improving Wikipedia is to enable more people to share in the ineffable joy of being a Wikimedian. The actual quality of the content of the encyclopedia is not that important to them; they reject vandals not because they harm the encyclopedia but because by their actions they demonstrate that they are not committed to the awesomeness of Wikipedia. This is also why they reject paid editors, and may even explain their disdain for experts. It also explains why they welcome editors who are sincere but incompetent.
This would also readily explain why wikipedia and its inhabitants are so easily compromised by sociopaths.

Laura Hale was on a panel at Barnard College on February 22, 2014. It was called "Digital Engagement in Transnational Feminisms". There's a video.
Laura Hale wrote:Someone in my sports program put together a proposal to the Australian Paralympic Committee and they said "We'll write the history of the Australian Paralympic Committee and the Australian paralympic movement - give us money and we'll do it" because it was one of those tenure, uh, grants that they're...you know...oh...bid. So my university won and they're going to write the history of Wikipedia...the Australian paralympics on Wikipedia.
Laura Hale wrote:I met my...uh...I also organized a women's only conference for Wikimedia...leadership conference. The other women are professional, well prepared and ready to speak and Laura Hale sounds like she came for a sleep over after drinking two bottles of Benadryl.

A bald call to WP:MEAT for her and her newly started paid editing gig.
1) Archive numbers 18 and 19 are missing from Brian McNeil's talkpage, which made it harder to find to where this thread had been archived. It doesn't matter for this discussion, but someone should let him know anyway: https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/User_talk:Brian_McNeil/Archive_18#Metrics_and_program_effectiveness
2) Looking through wm-bot's archives, it appears wm-bot did not archive #wikimedia-office for the 24th. There is a log for July 26, 2013 in which Ms Hale participated. (Note: in Brave Browser, this link causes a .txt file to download) link

For those who don't want to download the text, i will try to post the text here, but it is apparently 32.7k, so it may not post or the mods might remove it for me if it isn't supposed to be posted here:

[16:06:18] * Celio_Brazil says: Hy everybody! PED on Meta was already bookmarked. ;)
[16:06:25] <SarahStierch> Hey Celio_Brazil ~~
[16:06:32] <Celio_Brazil> I mean: Hi! :)
[16:06:38] <SarahStierch> Hola :)
[16:06:41] <fschulenburg> Let me start with a quick introduction into how this new team will be operating and how we're planning to support the people who're running programs. And – just as a reminder – when we're talking about "programs", we're referring to things like Wiki Loves Monuments, Edit-a-thons, Wikipedia editing workshops, online writing competitions, etc.
[16:07:13] <fschulenburg> Our general assumption is that there are already many awesome programmatic activities and evaluation will help to make these even more awesome. So, if someone would ask me about why program evaluation is important, this would be my first answer: because evaluation can drive the impact of your program. By closely monitoring the status and the outcome of your programmatic activity, you'll know whether you reached your goals or
[16:07:13] <fschulenburg> not. And that's an important precondition for improving things.
[16:08:00] <fschulenburg> Other than that, program evaluation can also help you to decide what to spend your time, energy and resources on. Here's an example: if you know that a specific program is really good at growing the amount of featured pictures on Commons and your goal is to improve Commons' quality, then that's possibly the right program for what you want to achieve. In this sense, program evaluation can be used as a tool for decision-making.
[16:08:13] <psychoslave> Hello
[16:09:13] <SarahStierch> Welcome psychoslave! Frank is doing an introduction about program evaluation and design :)
[16:09:19] <fschulenburg> Finally, program evaluation also helps you with being accountable to the people who provide you with resources. When I say "resources", most people might think of the FDC and the fact that the FDC asked last year for more information about which programs have the most impact. But I'm actually not only thinking of money. My take on accountability is also to think of the many hours of free time that people spend on programmatic
[16:09:19] <fschulenburg> work. I guess it would be highly rewarding if those volunteers knew that what they're doing has the maximum amount of impact.
[16:10:02] <psychoslave> Can I find logs somewhere to read what I missed ?
[16:10:24] <sumanah> http://bots.wmflabs.org/~wm-bot/logs/%23wikimedia-office/20130726.txt
[16:10:42] <fschulenburg> Now, when we started to think about program evaluation, we had to decide how we wanted to approach this: should the Foundation create a list of existing programs and then systematically run the numbers to see what has the biggest impact? Should our team in San Francisco decide which metrics are the best? – Our answer was no. Instead, we decided to do it differently: by focusing on capacity building (workshops, online
[16:10:43] <fschulenburg> materials, video chats, etc.), we want to enable the people who're running programs to self-evaluate. Also: it's them who will decide which metrics are best suited to find out whether the program reached its goals.
[16:10:47] <SarahStierch> Thanks sumanah
[16:10:57] <psychoslave> thank you :)
[16:11:23] <fschulenburg> Well, I guess it's obvious: top-down approaches don't fit into our culture. But there's also another reason why we think a self-evaluation approach is better. And that brings me back to my first point: evaluation is a very powerful tool to improve things. And the more people in our movement know about evaluation, the more we increase the likelihood of growing the impact that our programs have.
[16:11:28] <fschulenburg> (Done)
[16:11:51] <SarahStierch> Thanks fschulenburg!
[16:11:52] <T13|needsCoffee> psychoslave: you can replace the /logs/ with /html/ and .txt with .htm for a little easier to read version.
[16:12:40] <SarahStierch> We're pretty excited about the opportunities that PE&D holds - and we're eager to expand the network of community members we're assisting, so this is a great chance to help engage more people to get excited about evaluation...
[16:12:41] <SarahStierch> Ok..
[16:13:29] <SarahStierch> Next, janstee is going to talk briefly about "Appreciative Inquiry" which is a perspective that we're taking in our own team work, in the work we do in evaluation, and as a a way of "thinking" that we're trying to develop for the community we're building around evaluation. Take it away Jaime!
[16:14:03] <Martin_Rulsch> so you intend capacity building? how do you want to realize that?
[16:14:27] <SarahStierch> OK Martin, we'll let Jaime do her AI sharing briefly and then we'll take your first question :)
[16:14:36] <Martin_Rulsch> sure
[16:14:50] <SarahStierch> ai = appreciative inquiry (not artificial intelligence in this matter)
[16:14:58] <SarahStierch> heh
[16:15:05] <fschulenburg> :-)
[16:15:14] <janstee> So what is Appreciative Inquiry? To understand it is first important to understand that often times evaluation can simply take a Discrepancy Perspective in which
[16:15:15] <janstee> evaluation is seems as a process for identifying and measuring differences and inconsistency between what is and what should be and trying to fix "problems"
[16:16:12] <janstee> An Appreciative Inquiry Perspective on the other hand sees evaluation as a process for engaging people across the programming system in order to build and grow programs, and projects around what works, rather than exclusively focusing on trying to fix what doesn’t.
[16:17:25] <janstee> Using a combination of both perspectives allows us to ensure that we not only identify areas for improvement (important too) but that we identify and share the things that work!
[16:19:33] <janstee> So for example, instead of asking the question of "why do 80% of program participants not continue contributing to Wikimedia projects 6 months later", we might ask, "Why do the 20% who do contribute 6 months later do so?".
[16:19:53] <SarahStierch> That's awesome Jaime. That's a great example.
[16:20:01] <SarahStierch> So it builds relationships…everyone gets a voice…and it's positive!
[16:20:20] <SarahStierch> And we all know how good we are in the movement at focusing on the negative right? So we're trying to flip that on it's head.
[16:20:28] <SarahStierch> OK! Let's get to Martin_Rulsch's question: "so you intend capacity building? how do you want to realize that?"
[16:20:30] <SarahStierch> fschulenburg: will reply
[16:20:41] <fschulenburg> Yes, give me a second.
[16:22:00] <fschulenburg> Martin, I think the first step is to build a common understanding of the basic concepts of evaluation
[16:22:14] <fschulenburg> Also, to start using a shared language
[16:22:31] <fschulenburg> so, if e.g. Jaime talks about "inputs" and "outcomes"
[16:22:59] <Martin_Rulsch> I guess http://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/07/11/finding-out-what-works-first-workshop-program-evaluation/ was the first step to realize that
[16:23:01] <fschulenburg> everybody who's participating in the conversation should know what she's talking about
[16:23:04] <Martin_Rulsch> what are the next ones?
[16:23:32] <fschulenburg> the next one is that we'll enable people to pull their own data, design their own surveys, etc.
[16:24:09] <Martin_Rulsch> how? what people?
[16:24:10] <fschulenburg> this week, our analytics team provided us with the first beta version of the User Metrics API. They're also calling it WikiMetrics
[16:25:05] <fschulenburg> people who are interested in doing evaluation. I guess that's mostly the people who're running programs
[16:25:13] <Martin_Rulsch> https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User_Metrics <- that one I guess
[16:25:21] <fschulenburg> *click*
[16:25:49] <fschulenburg> yes, although the page is somewhat outdated
[16:26:03] <Martin_Rulsch> https://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/The_UserMetrics_API:_Measuring_participation_in_Wikimedia_projects <- I found a submission for Wikimania on this very topic
[16:26:14] <fschulenburg> yes, that's it
[16:26:14] <Martin_Rulsch> I think I should go there ;)
[16:26:24] <fschulenburg> absolutely :-)
[16:26:53] <sumanah> https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Analytics/Wikistats has more
[16:26:59] <SarahStierch> So back to capacity building...
[16:27:15] <SarahStierch> And WikiMetrics/UserMetrics is one part of that, but there are more opportunities as well..
[16:27:40] <fschulenburg> so, we're going to build a repository of resources on meta
[16:27:55] <fschulenburg> where people can learn more about how to do evaluation
[16:28:07] <fschulenburg> and also where they will be able to ask questions and have discussions
[16:28:29] <fschulenburg> Martin_Rulsch: did that answer your question?
[16:28:49] <JanAinali_WMSE> Nice, could there also be a sort of a Bookshelf?
[16:28:54] <SarahStierch> http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Resources
[16:29:05] <SarahStierch> We're working on that, and we hope community members will contribute as well
[16:29:13] <fschulenburg> JanAinali_WMSE: absolutely. we're also going to add links to books, etc.
[16:29:51] <T13|needsCoffee> Would this PE&D program include sone kind of train the trainers application?
[16:29:57] <SarahStierch> Great question T13|needsCoffee
[16:30:07] <Martin_Rulsch> and how will you enable the community and program managers to use these things?
[16:30:07] <JanAinali_WMSE> My idea is, there must be a lot of surveys uesd by chapters already for all sorts of things. Collecting these might be a good start
[16:30:12] <LauraHale> I would like to ask a question as well. :) What sort of analysis and tools are going to be used in terms of measuring real ROI? IE, has the group come up with ideal benchmarks regarding community time spent engaging in outreach as a function of new editor participation? What metrics are being used to assess the value for the money spent on programming? Is there an ideal such as say
[16:30:12] <LauraHale> US$100 spent on recruiting editors who participate over the couse of three months and make 1,000+ edits?
[16:30:13] <psychoslave> Will we be able to do things like "provide different templated versions of the same content and evaluate the user retention impact?"
[16:30:17] <SarahStierch> OK!
[16:30:21] <SarahStierch> I'm going to gather the questions :)
[16:30:28] <SarahStierch> Let's wrap up discussing capacity building, and then we'll move on
[16:31:03] <fschulenburg> Martin_Rulsch: I'm not entirely sure if I understand your question
[16:31:08] <SarahStierch> Martin_Rulsch: - Do you mean how will we support community and program managers - through mentoring or resources or tech support?
[16:31:21] <T13|needsCoffee> A growing concern lately has been people have been trying ti mentor/adopt before going through or as soon as they are done with initial adoption themselves.
[16:31:38] <Martin_Rulsch> a page on meta does not make the people use it
[16:31:44] <SarahStierch> We're still working on Martin_Rulsch's question.
[16:31:49] <SarahStierch> Then we'll go to T13|needsCoffee next :)
[16:32:09] <Martin_Rulsch> I see the workshop in Budapest and Hong Kong … what else is planned to get the people go there and use these tools?
[16:32:30] <fschulenburg> Martin_Rulsch: actually, so far, we've seen a lot of interest around evaluation
[16:32:34] <T13|needsCoffee> I've seen it at the teahouse, afc, -en-help, adopt-a-user, etc...
[16:32:48] <Achim_Raschka> Martin_Rulsch: a page on meta doesn't - butb maybe if some people start - for example I with the festival summer - it could be spread more and more
[16:33:19] <fschulenburg> In Hong Kong, we will be doing several things: e.g. we'll also have a shared booth with the grantmaking team
[16:33:24] <Achim_Raschka> and as FRank said: There is a lot of interest in evaluation the last years
[16:33:44] <fschulenburg> and we'll be available for people to discuss things and to answer questions
[16:34:11] <fschulenburg> Martin_Rulsch: also, I guess that good communication practices will help, e.g.
[16:34:42] <fschulenburg> once we get more blog posts out that highlight how people are actually using evaluation as a means to drive impact
[16:35:05] <fschulenburg> other people might be encouraged to follow that example
[16:35:28] <fschulenburg> To sum it up, I'm not concerned about a lack of interest ;-)
[16:35:40] <SarahStierch> OK! Our next question is from T13|needsCoffee
[16:35:47] <SarahStierch> T13|needsCoffee
[16:35:48] <SarahStierch> :
[16:35:49] <SarahStierch> Would this PE&D program include sone kind of train the trainers application?
[16:36:07] <T13|needsCoffee> :)
[16:36:31] <SarahStierch> janstee is going to take that!
[16:36:51] <SarahStierch> (then we'll get to LauraHale's question!)
[16:37:35] <Martin_Rulsch> one last comment: I'd consider spreading the word about these tools and help pages on project pages where the project managers have not yet evaluated their work
[16:37:39] <janstee> The training is targeting those who lead programs so that they may share the information and, naturally train others in their working to gain community involvement and input within their own programming context.
[16:38:26] <fschulenburg> Martin_Rulsch: yes. thanks. that's a good point. we're always happy about this kind of feedback.
[16:38:48] <SarahStierch> Does that help T13|needsCoffee ?
[16:39:05] <SarahStierch> Oops, janstee might have a bit more to say..
[16:39:05] <T13|needsCoffee> Yeah, a little.
[16:39:09] <janstee> So yes, we are basically following train the trainers model as we work with people running programs and provide them with resources to grow evaluation.
[16:39:25] <T13|needsCoffee> Ahh. Awesome. :)
[16:39:32] <psychoslave> Staying on the same question, and providing a more concrete example, I launched a community decision on fr.wikiversity about boxes design (to hopefully propose something pretty which will retain users), and some people are concerned that this homogenization work may disappoint readers and editors. Could we define a set of boxes templates and evaluate which one seems to give the best result on readers/editors engagement ?
[16:39:34] <SarahStierch> janstee is creating training modules, and we'll be doing all kinds of workshops online and off
[16:39:35] <SarahStierch> OK
[16:39:37] <SarahStierch> Next question
[16:39:51] <SarahStierch> LauraHale: I would like to ask a question as well. What sort of analysis and tools are going to be used in terms of measuring real ROI?  IE, has the group come up with ideal benchmarks regarding community time spent engaging in outreach as a function of new editor participation?  What metrics are being used to assess the value for the money spent on programming? Is there an ideal such as say
[16:40:06] <SarahStierch> janstee will reply!
[16:41:13] <SarahStierch> psychoslave: we'll get to your questions shortly :)
[16:41:13] <sumanah> I sort of want to follow up on T13|needsCoffee's question -- I think there are dozens of people who start and run programs but don't realize that they are doing "programs" and aren't participating in these conversations yet. Maybe sending a global message to the talk page of everyone on outreach.wikimedia.org would be good? :)
[16:41:17] * sumanah sits happily in queue
[16:42:02] <janstee> In terms of the way investments and impacts in a Return-on-Investments model - we are researching different practices for valuation and will continue to work with the community of programs to identify and come to agreement on how to prioritize how these things will contribute to the measurement model.
[16:42:17] <psychoslave> SarahStierch: I didn't mean to insist, I see that you answer questions as they come, I just wanted to add more specific information
[16:43:23] <LauraHale> janstee: If I have done an ROI analysis of a program privately, can I share it with you privately for feedback? My whole thesis is basically along the lines of data analysis of this sorts and the ROI component is new. I'd love feedback to see if I should do more of that as it pertains to programming work for TWG.
[16:43:25] <janstee> We will work to both define how program investments (staff and volunteer time, budget, etc.) are monitored and tracked as well as how success is measured.
[16:43:46] <Achim_Raschka> A question that arose several times: Do you have approaches to evaluate the uncountable effect like user satisfaction, impacts on quality increasement, fun (!!!), political and framework effects ....
[16:44:04] <SarahStierch> LauraHale: What is TWG?
[16:44:16] <raystorm_> Achim_Raschka, like satisfaction surveys?
[16:44:28] <sumanah> SarahStierch: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikinewsie_Group
[16:44:47] <LauraHale> SarahStierch: The Wikinewsie Group, which is in the process of trying to get thematic org recogition
[16:45:01] <janstee> Laura: That would be great to check out - my email is janstee@wikimedia.org
[16:45:03] <SarahStierch> ah ok! thanks
[16:45:15] <SarahStierch> ok psychoslave you're query is next.
[16:45:18] <Martin_Rulsch> Achim_Raschka: as far as I understand the problem, the PE&G team will not evaluate (a lot) by themselves but want to ensure program managers to self-evaluate their work in a better way
[16:45:27] <Martin_Rulsch> *problem -> project
[16:45:33] <LauraHale> janstee: Thank you. Will send you an e-mail in a minute or two. :)
[16:45:39] <fschulenburg> Martin_Rulsch: :-)
[16:45:49] <SarahStierch> :P
[16:45:57] <SarahStierch> classic irc office hours slip up ;)
[16:46:01] <SarahStierch> ok psychoslave
[16:46:14] <Achim_Raschka> Martin_Rulsch: yes, I know - but it would help to have some kind of idea sets to measure unmeasurables - for myself as a programme leader
[16:47:13] <SarahStierch> psychoslave: Staying on the same question, and providing a more concrete example, I launched a community decision on fr.wikiversity about boxes design (to hopefully propose something pretty which will retain users), and some people are concerned that this homogenization work may disappoint readers and editors. Could we define a set of boxes templates and evaluate which one seems to give the best result on readers/editors engagement
[16:47:42] <SarahStierch> (And note, the conversation doesn't have to stop here - we can talk on meta too: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Share_Space/Questions)
[16:47:58] <fschulenburg> psychoslave: I guess your question is: will the Foundation be able to provide people with dedicated support for A/B-testing
[16:48:06] <fschulenburg> psychoslave: is that correct?
[16:49:16] <psychoslave> Well, can you define A/B-testing, please ?
[16:49:23] <fschulenburg> sure
[16:49:35] <fschulenburg> A/B-testing in your case would work like this:
[16:49:37] <SarahStierch> (And fschulenburg will have to leave us in a couple of minutes, so ya'll will be stuck with janstee and I for the last ten minutes ;) )
[16:49:49] <fschulenburg> 50% of the users will get infobox A
[16:50:02] <fschulenburg> and the other 50% of the users will get infobox B
[16:50:07] <psychoslave> Yes, that's it.
[16:50:31] <fschulenburg> you'd set up at tracking tool that would measure how many users keep editing after either seeing A or B
[16:50:40] <Martin_Rulsch> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A/B_testing <- see also ;)
[16:51:04] <fschulenburg> ok, so the answer to your question is: no, we'll not be able to provide that service at this point
[16:51:05] <SarahStierch> or ;) https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test_A/B
[16:51:08] <sumanah> People who want to tell WMF's Analytics group about capabilities they want, or questions they want to answer using data, can reach out via their mailing list https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/analytics (cc drdee_ ) I also added some of my wishlist at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Analytics/Dreams
[16:51:26] <fschulenburg> yes, sumanah, that's a good point
[16:51:26] <SarahStierch> Achim_Raschka's question will be next
[16:51:44] <fschulenburg> I guess our analytics team is always open for feedback
[16:52:00] <sumanah> (in https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Staff?showall=1 look under "Analytics" for photos of people to talk with at Wikimania :) )
[16:52:19] <fschulenburg> at this point, they're somewhat restrained. we just got a new director of analytics in
[16:52:20] <SarahStierch> and they are hiring, too ;)
[16:52:26] <fschulenburg> and they'll need some time to build capacity
[16:52:30] <SarahStierch> OK Achim_Raschka: A question that arose several times: Do you have approaches to evaluate the uncountable effect like user satisfaction, impacts on quality increasement, fun (!!!), political and framework effects ....
[16:52:43] <SarahStierch> janstee will take that
[16:52:55] <SarahStierch> Achim_Raschka are you suggesting surveys or..?
[16:53:16] <LauraHale> I posted research relatedto program metrics to the Analytics mailing list and it got zero feedback. As a place for community driven research and community (not developer) attempts to do A/B testing, it probably is not ideal?
[16:53:22] <Achim_Raschka> best would be without - for some cases they could work
[16:54:05] <sumanah> LauraHale: you mean http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/analytics/2013-July/000802.html ? there wasn't really a request for feedback there, was there?
[16:54:24] <SarahStierch> Let's focus on PE&D :)
[16:54:26] <raystorm_> there are qualitative tools for measuring subjective things like satisfaction and fun
[16:54:30] <SarahStierch> We can discuss analytics concerns afterwards
[16:54:32] <SarahStierch> Please? :)
[16:54:56] <LauraHale> :)
[16:54:59] <sumanah> nod
[16:55:43] <fschulenburg> Ok, I have to run. SarahStierch and janstee will continue to answer questions. Thanks a lot for everybody being here. And also for your questions. See you next time.
[16:55:48] <fschulenburg> Bye
[16:56:03] <SarahStierch> Thanks fschulenburg !!! janstee is responding right now to Achim_Raschka and raystorm_
[16:56:05] <janstee> Other than direct inquiry with your participants it is hard for me to imagine how you would measure satisfaction other than via assumptions and assessment of participants productivity before and after an event. We are working to identify scalable methods for online survey data collection that would work for the myriad programming cases that we hope to support evaluation in.
[16:57:22] <raystorm_> that would be fantastic
[16:57:28] <LauraHale> sumanah: No feedback or even acknowledgement period. There appears to be a disconnect between development metrics (with a focus on SQL database skills) and community driven ability to self assess but only through developers. The other options is survey research, which is problematic given self selecting populations.
[16:57:59] <janstee> As far as political and framework effects, generally qualitative tracking of efforts and changes in conditions can be motored through various means but become further removed from direct observation of cause and effect - why we try to identify the tangible units of change along the pathway to the impact or change in condition.
[16:58:16] * sumanah PMs with Laura
[16:58:21] <janstee> *monitored not motored
[16:58:54] <janstee> Does that help to answer your question Achim?
[16:59:15] <Achim_Raschka> o.k. - so best would be surveays - when the questions are usable for surveys - and for the rest of questions working with assumptions to prove.
[16:59:39] <SarahStierch> And yup, janstee will be developing fabulous training modules on how to do great surveys and so forth.
[16:59:47] <SarahStierch> It takes time, but the team is working on it - it's very exciting.
[16:59:52] <SarahStierch> OK!
[16:59:58] <raystorm_> program leaders would be taughthow to run the scalable method for online survey data collection, then?
[17:00:00] <SarahStierch> That wraps up the first Program Evaluation & Design Office Hours
[17:00:05] <Achim_Raschka> the most interesting question for me always is "Did all participants have as much fun as possible"
[17:00:13] <SarahStierch> janstee can respond quickly to raystorm_
[17:00:18] * SarahStierch nods at Achim_Raschka
[17:00:25] <raystorm_> appreciate it :)
[17:00:29] <SarahStierch> It's an important thing - we don't do this because it's boring, right? :)
[17:00:30] <Ainali> Is it a good idea too have one survey for ie. edit-a-thons across all chapters?
[17:01:06] <SarahStierch> We'll wrap up this survey conversation and that'll signify the end of office hours for today.
[17:02:02] <janstee> It is in the big picture that we will work to identify the most feasible way for program leaders to yes, post, collect, and analyze programmatic surveys…. this is something that will require growing both needs assessment related to the survey tools and shareable items, as well as generation of capacity for a feasible, scalable mode for doing the collection and analysis at each program's local level.
[17:03:40] <psychoslave> thank you for your answers
[17:03:41] <sumanah> LauraHale and I have clarified in PM the thing about feedback-getting :)
[17:03:56] <janstee> The shareable items will make up the programmatic survey recommendations =)
[17:04:04] <SarahStierch> OK!
[17:04:10] <raystorm_> that sounds great, thank you!
[17:04:31] <SarahStierch> Thank you everyone for participating. Please remember to get involved here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Index
[17:04:47] <SarahStierch> And you can find out how to join our mailing list here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program_Evaluation_and_Design/News
[17:04:52] <SarahStierch> (it's an announcement list)
[17:04:58] <SarahStierch> We also have an IRC room that is rather quiet right now at #wikimedia-ped
[17:05:01] <SarahStierch> Quick survey:
[17:05:04] <SarahStierch> (ooh evaluation!)
[17:05:07] <raystorm_> thanks for your time answering questions, all of you :)
[17:05:08] <SarahStierch> How often would you like to see us do this?
[17:05:16] <SarahStierch> Every other week or once a month, for example?
[17:05:16] <raystorm_> every day? :P
[17:05:19] <SarahStierch> LOL!
[17:05:22] <raystorm_> ^^
[17:05:22] <sumanah> about every other month
[17:05:33] <SarahStierch> let's hear from non-staff please :)
[17:06:00] <Achim_Raschka> once a month could be o.k.
[17:06:02] <sumanah> fair. also want to note it would be great if it could be in partnership with a person from Analytics to help answer any tech questions that come up about WikiMetrics etc.
[17:06:07] <raystorm_> once a week
[17:06:25] <raystorm_> at least the first weeks? so many questions to ask...
[17:06:36] <Ainali> but not on Friday evenings :)
[17:06:36] <SarahStierch> how about this: janstee and i are going to do our best to hang out on IRC more often - I know I need to, I miss talking to my friends on here…so let's make sure we hang out in the #wikimedia-ped room
[17:06:36] <raystorm_> an our goes by so quickly! :)
[17:06:38] <SarahStierch> and you can email us too <3
[17:06:41] <SarahStierch> absolutely
[17:06:41] <raystorm_> *hour
[17:06:45] <SarahStierch> it totally does!
[17:06:53] <SarahStierch> we'll schedule a formal meeting once a month
[17:07:01] <raystorm_> nice compromise!
[17:07:03] <SarahStierch> but do our best, and of course we're always working on meta
[17:07:22] <SarahStierch> yay we have raystorm_ in our room now!
[17:07:23] <SarahStierch> LOL
[17:07:36] <LauraHale> A week or every other week would be nice.
[17:07:37] <raystorm_> ^^ join people! it's nice there!
[17:07:39] <SarahStierch> OK everyone> This was great. You'll find a log on the office hours page on meta and we can't wait to connect at Wikimania too - you'll find us at the Learning & Evaluation booth
[17:07:48] <SarahStierch> We'll find a happy medium
[17:07:54] <LauraHale> Especially if it looks like the work wll have any tiein to FDC funding as program evaluation gets tied into funding.
[17:07:55] <Achim_Raschka> o.k. - I have to leave my office now - it's friday evening and later than seven ;)
[17:08:09] <SarahStierch> OK! Yes, thanks Achim_Raschka!

Interesting quote from her at about the 29 minute mark:
Hey you know you could probably get a job doing this Wikipedia stuff an academic job, you don’t need to do that traditional publishing route. So now I’m living in fear that I will finish my PhD in September and I won’t have a job, because rather than publish I’ve been sitting there going, let me edit Wikipedia!
Explains her motivation quite nicely. She wanted to edit Wikipedia as a full time job, utilizing grant money from government-type institutions as the funding, since according to her in the video, that's where this type of money is.

And it shows that she's aware that her dissertation and degree are effectively worthless.
Hello, John. John, hello. You're the one soul I would come up here to collect myself.

This appears to contradict what the Australian Paralympic Committee wrote in their 2010-2011 annual report:
APC 2010-2011 annual report, p.34, wrote:A tender brief for the written history of the Paralympic movement in Australia was written and the tender process conducted. The APC appointed the University of Queensland and sports historian Murray Phillips to write the history of the Paralympic movement in Australia using a unique process which will draw on resources such as Wikipedia to produce an online book which can meet the APC’s needs for hardcopy and multimedia versions. The University of Canberra and Wikimedia Australia are involved in the online information gathering elements of the project. This written history will draw together many of the other elements of the overall history project and make them accessible to a wide audience.
Note that this was some three years before the University of Queensland was awarded the ARC linkage grant to continue this work. If you want to get any idea of who did what in this project, or where the funds came from and where they went, I'd suggest taking anything Laura Hale has to say about it with a large grain of salt.
