Misogyny on YouTube (ends up on Wikipedia)
This one's a classic:
http://www.feministfrequency.com/2012/0 ... n-youtube/
She's smart, well-spoken, and makes many good points. And gets flamed for it, literally thousands of times.

http://www.pmsclan.com/content.php?task=detail&pid=641Sarkeesian’s Wikipedia page has been repeatedly vandalised, including adding images of hardcore porn (a woman with a cock in her mouth, naturally), and descriptions of Sarkeesian such as “an entitled nigger kitchen and hooker who focuses on drugs in popular culture and their association with tropes.” It goes on to make remarks about inserting sex toys in her “posterior”, multiple links to the more notoriously unpleasant sex acts, and perhaps most sinisterly of all, refers to her throughout as “it”. You don’t have to be a psychoanalyst to draw conclusions from the attempt of such vandals to render her as without a sex. Another vandalism attempt saw a description of Sarkeesian as a “cunt” make it into the excerpt on the first result for her name on Google – something that was posted with pride on various forums, including the Escapist. According to Wikipedia, at least a dozen people were actively part of this attack.
http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/inter ... thing-nice
This one has links to other instances of gamer women being harassed online:The intimidation and harassment effort has included a torrent of misogyny and hate speech on my YouTube video, repeated vandalizing of the Wikipedia page about me, organized efforts to flag my YouTube videos as "terrorism", as well as many threatening messages sent through Twitter, Facebook, Kickstarter, email and my own website. These messages and comments have included everything from the typical sandwich and kitchen "jokes" to threats of violence, death, sexual assault and rape. All that plus an organized attempt to report this project to Kickstarter and get it banned or defunded.

It wound up on The Register: http://www.reghardware.com/2012/06/14/t ... llegation/“She’ll get taken prisoner by island scavengers. And then, Rosenberg says, those scavengers will try to rape her.” Because nothing makes a girl more likable than seeing her almost get raped.

There are any number of teen patrollers and gamer-boys on WP who could do this. I've got a couple of possibilities in mind already.....HRIP7 wrote:Note the clueful nature of some of the vandalism; wikilinks and adding a Nazi stub template. Tsk tsk.
You noticed that a couple of the deleted revs were made by IPV6 addresses? You have to be an IT expert to set up IPV6, so
whoever they are, they were either working for a big corporation that switched to IPV6, or knew how to set up IPV6 on their
home PC, router, modem etc.
I've been told there are HUNDREDS of diffs that were completely oversighted, and do not appear in the history AT ALL.

Re: Misogyny on YouTube (ends up on Wikipedia)
You have a point. I didn't know there was a stub template in the article to begin with. Still, I suspect most people you meet in the street, or a gamer forum for that matter, wouldn't have known to edit the stub template to vandalise the article, or known where to find a "suitable image" and how to insert it. What with all that challenging wiki mark-up ... I am quite convinced the people concerned are "valued members of the community" making "productive edits" to gaming articles by day.Mason wrote:I wouldn't call changing {{feminist-stub}} to {{nazi-stub}} "clueful", exactly.HRIP7 wrote:Note the clueful nature of some of the vandalism; wikilinks and adding a Nazi stub template. Re: Misogyny on YouTube (ends up on Wikipedia)
I guess what this case also demonstrates is that the demographic that posts comments at YouTube and the like is hardly representative of the wider population.
Re: Misogyny on YouTube (ends up on Wikipedia)
A Google page talks about IPv6 Day happening on June 6 of this year. IPv6 addresses should be more and more common. I don't know which internet service providers have switched over but Wikipedia has a global message to expect the IPv6 addresses to appear everywhere.EricBarbour wrote:There are any number of teen patrollers and gamer-boys on WP who could do this. There has been some discussion of Anita Sarkeesian on the Gendergap list
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/ge ... /date.html
(the threads are Nastiness, positive action Re: Nastiness, On Ms. Sarkeesian - tropes - and notability)
I suggested yesterday that the Gendergap moderators invite her to participate in the list. No response to that as yet. I have a sinking feeling they might be too scared of rocking the boat to do it ... if my hunch is correct, I'll go ahead and invite her. And I'll invite her here at the same time.

She'd be awesome.
Re: Misogyny on YouTube (ends up on Wikipedia)
Reading that list makes me sad. The subset of ridiculous topics deemed notable at WP that intersect with traditionally male interests is working its way towards infinity. The article is a keep. How on earth are people on a GenderGap mailing list apathetic or hostile to improving the article? Men improve practically nonsense articles all the time so they make WP policy wonks happy.HRIP7 wrote:There has been some discussion of Anita Sarkeesian on the Gendergap list

This is rich, coming from a guy who was banned from eBay repeatedly for fraud.....and who has been running around the web, franticallyThere are no reliable sources in the article which discuss Sarkeesian in-depth -- there is an interview on a blog, but this can't be used to base notability on.
As it stands now, Anita (who is hardly notable) had the misfortune to meet some trolls on the internet (welcome to Internet peoples), and now she is basically notable, because her un-notable Wikipedia biography was trolled with a pr0n imagem, and someone reported on it.
Anyone wishing to get their bio onto WP should use this case as an example of how to go about it.
The article should be at AfD, because as it stands now, it is everything that WP is not.
Russavia
deleting all the mentions of his fraudulent past from every website he possibly can. (Don't bother, dude---I've got screenshots of them......)
Gendergap is worthless. Every time someone brings up a really ugly situation, Pete Forsyth or Sarah Stierch show up and start sniping
that it's "off topic". Most of the others apparently have brain damage, and go along with them. You're wasting your time, Andreas.
I see that you also brought up Holly Graf, and up pops Russavia, to screech "Is that an edit of the article, or a whitewashing of the article?"

Misogyny at Anita Sarkeesian
By Molly McHugh at http://www.digitaltrends.com/social-med ... r-bullies/.Sarkeesian runs a site called Feminist Frequency where she blogs about women’s issues and the Internet. Her Kickstarter idea apparently hit a nerve, because her Wikipedia page were subject to attacks from a handful of video game forum members.
You can see a screenshot of Sarkeesian’s Wikipedia page here (warning: graphic language). There’s also a variety of hateful comments left on her YouTube page promoting the project.
An archive of the talk page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Anita ... /Archive_1

Re: Misogyny at Anita Sarkeesian
Not only that.....some pathetic manchild decided that Sarkeesian needed to be "punished", for running a successful fundraising campaign.
So he created a Newgrounds Flash game in which you can beat Anita Sarkeesian to a pulp. (Don't bother, Newgrounds already deleted it.)
(note: second thread merged into original.)

There is currently another AN/I thread on Sarkeesian.
The darlings over at Wikipedia have been discussing there for a week whether Niemti (T-C-L), a chap who suggests on the talk page of Sarkeesian's biography that she should have just ignored the appalling harassment she suffered at the hands of Wikipedia and other online forums rather than creating a "moral panic", or could have done things like "counter-attack literally using her vagina", should or should not be topic-banned from Sarkeesian's bio.
