If Wikipedia is any indication, faith in Haith is dwindling
FOX Sports, 26 February 2014 link
If one were to peruse Wikipedia for information on Missouri's Frank Haith, one might sense the natives are getting restless. [...]Amid the normal array of facts and figures on the Tigers' third-year basketball coach -- his birth date, early life and coaching background -- are a couple of editorial opinions that likely reflect some fans' reaction to Mizzou's troubled 2013-14 season. [...] How does one then go about uncovering, connecting, and essentially “unforgetting” what is such a rich but elusive narrative? It starts with Lawson’s keen and forward-thinking notion that this is not a task for one; that, particularly in the Internet era, learning isn’t just the solitary act of reading a single voice, but rather engaging in a conversation and welcoming insight and perspective from many. [...] In this participatory vein, EoB culminated its Summer Issues Cooperative—a three-week, free, pop-up art newsstand at Greene Exhibitions—with a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon event this past July. Themed “#UnforgettingLA,” about 60 art fans and 10 editors armed with laptops created a crowd-sourced list of cultural omissions from Wikipedia, which has noted gaps in arts and female contributions, plus new pages for local artists like Noah Purifoy and William Leavitt. The second Edit-a-thon on December 14 at the MAK Center will accompany a Pauline Schindler exhibition, and focus on building Wikipedia content for West Coast women in architecture and design. The timely topic coincides with EoB’s first title, Piecing Together Los Angeles: An Esther McCoy Reader, a book about author and architecture historian (and champion of California modernism) Esther McCoy, edited by Susan Morgan.

“It seemed like a good fit, because so much of the architecture and design community is interested in corrective measures. Which, Wikipedia is, in a sense,” says Allan, articulating what could similarly be viewed as East of Borneo’s mission. “It’s a chance to put things on the record that otherwise are known by a very small group of people, but not by a larger community.”

MOCA edits the LA art scene using manpower and Wikipedia
Daily Sundial, 26 February 2014 link
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) and online art magazine East of Borneo are coordinating a massive Wikipedia edit-a-thon in an attempt to strengthen the online history of art in Southern California. This is the third in a series of edit-a-thons, part of the East of Borneo “Unforgetting L.A.” campaign, and will focus on the 30 years since MOCA launched. [...] The group is currently building a worklist on their website and on Wikipedia that includes dozens of pages to be created. Suggestions include a wide range of artists, notable individuals, galleries and organizations, publications, architects and designers. Past Unforgetting L.A. edit-a-thons have resulted in the creation of 17 pages for artists, architects, designers and exhibitions [...]

There was an edit-a-thon hosted by the Royal Ontario Museum (T-H-L) in Toronto, Canada: Wikipedia:GLAM/ROM (T-H-L)

The various articles about the Royal Ontario Museum, its galleries, and its iconic objects are rather poorly written, despite the fact that much were written by the curators themselves.

American Canyon man moonlights as Wikipedia editor
Increasing knowledge, one article at a time
Napa Valley Register, 1 March 2014 link
Self-described bookworm Jim Heaphy recalled receiving a set of World Book encyclopedias as a child. “I’d pick up a volume at random and page through it looking for something interesting,” Heaphy said. “I’ve always been interested in learning about a very wide variety of things.” These days, instead of just reading encyclopedias, Heaphy’s helping write one. In his spare time, the American Canyon resident is a volunteer editor for the online worldwide encyclopedia Wikipedia. Since 2009, when he began contributing to Wikipedia, Heaphy (pronounced hay-fee) said he’s made 26,509 edits to the English Wikipedia website. He’s written 62 new articles and substantially expanded 229 other articles. He spends about one to two hours a day on his Wikipedia editing, said Heaphy. Of the millions of Wikipedia editor accounts, many of which aren’t active, Heaphy is ranked No. 2,124 in terms of numbers of edits, he said. [...]

Heaphy explained a few key tenets of the encyclopedia.
First, editors use information only from reliable sources. In addition, Wikipedia “is not a place for advocacy. It’s a place for neutrally written encyclopedia articles.”
Promotional or public relation-type edits are discouraged and usually removed once an editor sees them.
An arbitration committee rules on article or editing disputes, Heaphy said. Some hot-button topics such as Israel, Palestine and abortion are carefully monitored for abuse. [...]

If he could change anything about Wikipedia, Heaphy said he would try to create a more welcoming environment for new editors.
“A negative climate sometimes exists towards new editors. A lot of new editors deserve to have their butts kicked because they’re not there for the right reasons” or might not be the best editors, “but some new editors are there for the right reasons,” he said. Those people should be encouraged, he said. In that spirit, Heaphy has been mentoring a young female Wikipedia editor who lives in Cuba and faces Internet censorship and accessibility issues in her writing. [...] Wikipedia is “a gift to humanity,” he said. “It’s a resource that volunteers have created for learning (and) free knowledge. It’s for every person on the face of the earth. And I’m very, very proud to be part of it.”
So this is James Heaphy, one of the worst and most stupid editors I have come across. He uses his articles as coatracks for links to lies, libels and defamation, either out of malice or because he is being paid to do so: Cullen328 (T-C-L).

And here is his "teenage partner in Cuba", a familiar name on Jimbo's talk page (as is his on hers). The account, recently scrubbed of its white-supremacist content, is about as fake as an account can be: Miss_Bono (T-C-L)

He is Napa County's only known Wikipedia editor.

History buffs wanted to update Wikipedia pages
Salisbury Post, 4 March 2014 link
Chances are if you search for “Rowan County NC” online, one of your top two results will be from Wikipedia, a collaboratively edited, multilingual, free Internet encyclopedia. Anyone who can access the site can edit almost any of its articles, a fact that has been praised and ridiculed by the public and scholars alike. With more than 1.2 billion unique visitors annually, Wikipedia is the largest and most popular general reference work online, and it’s up to researchers and scholars to verify the facts. That’s where local residents come in. Rowan Public Library invites local history buffs to join them for the first Wikipedia Editathon, held at Rowan Public Library Headquarters at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1. [...]
The crowd of researchers and scholars who show up at Rowan Public Library Headquarters, in their academic gowns and thinking caps, should be a sight to see.

Histories of Rowan will help with Wikipedia edit-athon
Salisbury Post, 17 March 2014 link
As part of the 411 events in which Rowan Public Library is participating, the library will host a Wikipedia edit-athon on April 1 at 6:30 p.m. Wikipedia is a widely used Internet resource for all types of knowledge. In order to facilitate quick but accurate information, Wikipedia encourages those with access to documented information to provide or edit data found in the online encyclopedia. The Wikipedia edit-athon will provide an opportunity to craft paragraphs highlighting the rich history of Rowan’s past full of interesting events and colorful characters.

There are several books that are important in reflecting an accurate picture of Rowan’s past. “Carolina Cradle” by Robert Ramsey describes the first inhabitants of this land, the first white explorers and the pioneers that followed. His work is an attempt to trace the process by which this section of the South was populated and the character of the initial settlers [...] The first and still widely respected history of Rowan and her prominent families was published in 1881 and written by the pastor of First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Jethro Rumple. [...] It is an invaluable resource for Rowan’s past. In the bicentennial year of Rowan, 1953, a well-respected historian and native Salisburian, James S. Brawley, wrote another history of Rowan County, “The Rowan Story.” It both clarified some of Rumple’s information and included the later history of the county. He speaks of the activities and people who helped in the recovery of Rowan after the Civil War up to the current (1953) business ventures. [...] With these books and the many other resources, the hope is to expand and enhance the data available in the online encyclopedia during and after our edit-athon. [...]

Perhaps I am unkind to North Carolina. It may be that I was offended by the Rowan Public Library's intention to focus on "the first inhabitants of this land, the first white explorers, and the pioneers that followed", on Rowan's "prominent families", and on "the activities and people who helped in the recovery of Rowan after the Civil War".

UNC to host edit-a-thon on black history
Greensboro News & Record, 30 March 2014 link
Abolitionist Abraham Galloway has no Wikipedia page, while the one for Rep. Eva Clayton needs more verification. The North Carolina Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Sunday hopes to remedy these and other issues involving the online encyclopedia with its second "Edit-a-thon" focusing on African-American history in North Carolina. Anyone with a laptop can participate in the edit-a-thon, which will take place in room 504 of Wilson Library on campus. The school hopes to create and improve Wikipedia articles about blacks and black history in North Carolina. Specialized knowledge isn't required as library resources and a list of suggested topics will be available. Editors also can participate remotely.
It would have been helpful if this Associated Press story had provided a date (it's being held today, 30 March).

Somebody Done Made Ryan Fitzpatrick Look Like A Dang Moron On That There Wikipedia Page
SportsGrid, 12 April 2014 link
Image

Harvard graduate and current Texans back up Ryan Fitzpatrick is, among other things, really, really smart. His up-and-down NFL career, however, has seen the sidelines of five franchises over the course of nine seasons. Point being: Fitzy ain’t exactly the QB equivalent of Nikola Tesla. Still, he’s smarter than everyone you know. That didn’t stop some anonymous Wikipedia hater from making his default image that of a Velociraptor-human hybrid. He makey smarty footballman look like dumb dumb player. Ahem.

Image

During his career as a Bill, Fitzpatrick averaged 16 INTs, 20 TDs, and 2914 yards per season — which isn’t as good as Jim Kelly’s numbers so, obviously, Ryan Fitzpatrick sucks. Buffalo…we know it was one of you that did this. Just change it back and no one will get in trouble.

Il sindaco di Lecce? Su Wikipedia Perrone è un politico "beggione".
LecceSette, 15 April 2015 link

Google-translation from Italian link
The mayor of Lecce? Perrone on Wikipedia is a political "beggione"

Under the heading Paolo Perrone on Wikipedia states that the mayor of Lecce is a "politician Italian beggione" the news has already been around the web. Difficult to determine whether it is a remnant of the first of April, or the joke of a jolly fellow geek, seciso to capture the mayor of Lecce as "beggione," a role that gave him the zany video of last year when the mayor appeared in the nightlife of Lecce equipped mirrored goggles and scarf, but the fact is that the voice Paolo Perrone Wikipedia reports quote: "Italian politician, beggione, mayor of Lecce." The catchphrase was born from comparsata the first citizen in the video "Beddhu Lecce style", a parody of the video of the Korean dancer and singer Psy, author of the famous "Gangnam style", so ended up heading to the open source encyclopedia Paul Perrone . Despite the undisputed permeability of the platform, not new to this type of small hacks both serious and humorous, the online encyclopedia is in fact one of the most consulted in the world. Not surprisingly, the news has already been around the web.

It might have gone even further around the web if 'LecceSette' had bothered to explain what a "beggione" is. Google Translate has no idea.

No free online translator or dictionary seems to know what a "beggione" is. I assume it means "effete male prostitute" based on the description of what the mayor did in Lecce at night.

No, that's not what it means. The term appears to be a local neologism which has yet to make the dictionaries, but there are some news sources which do explain it. As I understand it, it's an eponym which originated from the handle of a fictional character, whose supposed attitudes and activities reported on social media are typical of the group of people which the term is now being used to refer to. Leccenews24.it describes this character as:

Translation:. ... a young Lecce man established in circles which count, above all if by "circle" one understands discotheque, above all if by "discotheque" one understands Guendalina. Loved and detested as if he were of real flesh and bones, Beggione has a (great) lifestyle all his own: he stays up into the small hours every day, he doesn't drink water but only cocktails containing Belvedere vodka, he owns an iPhone because it isn't just any old phone but the most fashionable, he goes around only with mauve banknotes [i.e. notes of denomination 500 euro], he drives luxury cars exclusively, and so on ... a peculiarity wholly of Salento [i.e. the heel on the boot of the Italian peninsula] which reflects a generation of young people (frequenters of the Piazzetta Saint Clare) who have aroused curiosity, admiration, imitative aspirations and, from time to time, also indignation.
The term appears to have enjoyed only a very limited circulation until Perrone portrayed the character satirically in a cameo appearance in the video mentioned in the Leccesette article. Perrone appears at around 10' 32" into the video. The term appears to be hardly more derogatory than "yuppie" is in English, although it may now have acquired slightly stronger connotations of mockery. Here are two further descriptions from the web:
Affaritalia.it wrote: Ma chi sono i beggioni: moderni yuppies salentini, la generazione di giovani frequentatori dei bar alla moda e delle discoteche in come il Ciak e il Guendalina, che ha destato curiosità, ammirazione, desiderio di emulazione ma anche parecchie critiche.

Translation: But who are the beggioni: modern yuppies of Salento, the generation of youngsters who frequent fashionable bars and "in" discotheques such as Ciak [pr. Chuck] and Guendalina, who have aroused curiosity, admiration, imitative aspirations, but also much criticism.
Salentropia blog wrote: beggione: forma di yuppie tardivo e meridionalistico.

Translation: beggione: a dated and typically southern Italian form of yuppie.
E voi, piuttosto che le nostre povere gabbane d'istrioni, le nostr' anime considerate. Perchè siam uomini di carne ed ossa, e di quest' orfano mondo, al pari di voi, spiriamo l'aere.

Peoria Wikipedia page latest casualty of Twitter fiasco
Peoria Journal Star, 30 April 2014 link
For those who haven’t checked it yet, it appears someone’s been doing some editing of Peoria’s Wikipedia page to further tweak the city — and Mayor Jim Ardis — for the overblown reaction to the not-very-funny Twitter account that mocked Ardis. The page now includes a line referencing Charles Lindbergh’s occasional 1926 stops in town to deliver mail by plane that notes Lindbergh “got arrested on orders of the mayor, Jedidiah Ardis, for telling a limerick involving a priest, a rabbi, and the mayor.” [... Peroia jokes ...] And the countdown to the complete scrubbing of Peoria’s page begins now …

OSLO—Norwegian defense company Kongsberg Gruppen AS, charged by police Tuesday with corruption, said it didn't act on suspicions of undesirable business practices because an internal investigation turned up no proof. Kongsberg and one of its employees were hit with charges related to the sale and delivery of communications equipment to Romanian authorities, Chief Executive Walter Qvam said at a news conference hours after the charges were disclosed by the company. The economic crime unit of the Norwegian police searched the company's headquarters in southern Norway, as well as an office in Asker, Mr. Qvam said. Marianne Djupesland, a prosecutor for Norway's national economic crime unit, confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that the police had carried out a search related to the charges, but didn't say where or whether it had seized any materials. Ms. Djupesland declined to comment on the actual charges. The company's relationship with several Romanian ministries began in the late 1990s and included contracts with a combined value of about 1.4 billion Norwegian kroner ($233 million). [...] Under Norwegian law, the corruption charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, and the company risks a corporate fine. [...]

Calcio Catania, insults arrive on Wikipedia
Anonymous User offends the history of the company

Football joke in bad taste: a few hours on the Wikipedia page of the official Catania Calcio a member yet unidentified amended the information of the item. The result is a profile of insults that stifles the team and the company's president Santos who is fighting to the end in hopes of getting a salvation objectively unlikely. It has already spread over the network by word of mouth among fans for the most outraged and it is obvious that the main suspects fall on some fan Palermo, since it is the historic football rivalry between the two cities in Sicily. So much so that the fans of Palermo are already planning the funeral of Catania in the event of relegation to Serie B.

If you think about it, these "Wikipedia hack-a-thons" are the best visible evidence that the truth about Wikipedia is becoming folk knowledge: the website is so unfriendly, corrupt, and intractable that groups should edit in numbers and gain allies, or else new content will just be deleted.

Another "Unforgetting L.A." edit-a-thon; earlier ones are described in several posts in this thread.

CalArtians Edit Wikipedia to ‘Broaden Scope of Art Coverage’
SCVNews, 12 June 2014 link
Unforgetting L.A. edit-a-thons create Wikipedia articles for artists and aspects of cultural history overlooked in the online encyclopedia. Organized by California Institute of the Arts’ online magazine East of Borneo, edit-a-thon volunteers work from a crowd sourced list of topics to build a more diverse and accurate online chronicle of the Southern California scene. The fourth Unforgetting L.A. write-in will focus on creating Wikipedia articles for unrepresented art spaces and publications. [...] “Training new editors is one important way that we can broaden the scope of Wikipedia’s art coverage, making the online encyclopedia more diverse and accurate. There are so many reasons that art histories become marginalized—gender, race, but also practices that are collaborative, political, controversial, or simply less market-friendly. It’s an exciting thing to witness those historical gaps being filled in by our meet-up volunteers, many of whom have never contributed to Wikipedia before,” said East of Borneo executive editor Stacey Allan. [...]

“Wikipedia will only contain ‘the sum of all human knowledge’ if its editors are as diverse as the population itself: we can help make that happen,” said Sue Gardner, former Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation. “We’re one part of a larger movement that sees art museums and others embracing Wikipedia as a way to share specialized knowledge online, in a way that makes it far more accessible than it would be in an exhibition catalogue or an archive. All of the research and scholarship that was generated through the Getty’s Pacific Standard Timeproject, for example, can be used to create Wikipedia entries for those otherwise forgotten figures, and their new presence online can encourage further writing and research.” [...]

Wikipedia, better than its reputation
Helsinki Times wrote:Helsingin Sanomat newspaper evaluated 134 articles in the Finnish-language version of Wikipedia with 96 experts. As far as we know, our study is the most extensive individual investigation on the trustworthiness of Wikipedia in the whole world.

We found out that Wikipedia is better than it’s reputation: seventy per cent of the articles got good points for accuracy. But in many ways the Finnish Wikipedia is also far from flawless.

Olavi Koistinen HS

Hundreds of thousands of people use the Finnish-language version of Wikipedia every day. Its articles rank at the top in Google search results, whether you are looking for information on climate change, Michael Jackson, Sydney, ball bearings, cancer, allosaurus, or any number of other topics.

Wikipedia is the only Finnish encyclopedia that is still being updated. The golden age of printed encyclopedias was in the 1990s, but with the advent of the internet, their sales collapsed. The last traditional Finnish encyclopedia, the online version of WSOY’s Facta, was closed down in 2011.

The reliability of the English language Wikipedia has been studied for years. The most famous study was published by the science magazine Nature in 2005, comparing the number of errors in Wikipedia with those in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The result of the comparison was that Wikipedia was almost as accurate as the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The study involved 42 articles from each encyclopaedia.

However, no thorough investigations have been made about the reliability of the Finnish Wikipedia – until now.

We first chose 134 articles in the Finnish Wikipedia, covering different areas of life, to be studied. Then we asked an expert with a thorough knowledge on the subject matter to evaluate each article. There were a total of 96 people making assessments, most of them professors or other university researchers. They work in eight different Finnish universities.

However, the conclusion should not be drawn that Wikipedia can be trusted naively. A total of 14 articles were graded as poor (1) or tolerable (2).

“Already in the first sentence the definition of photosynthesis is odd, and several mistakes were found.” (Photosynthesis)

“The article is very uneven in quality, and at times quite propagandistic.” (Syrian civil war)

Many of the articles containing the most errors were about a complicated or abstract phenomena, such as the eurozone debt crisis, evolution, or the Syrian civil war. On the other hand, several articles dealing with equally complex subjects got high marks for lack of errors. For instance, the articles for the big bang and climate change were praised for their precision.

Although most of the articles were extolled for their accuracy, it can be concluded that there is more variation in the quality of articles in Finnish Wikipedia than in traditional encyclopedias. According to studies, the same also applies to English Wikipedia: the best articles are brilliant, but many are weak.
http://www.helsinkitimes.fi/finland/fin ... ation.html

I use Wikipedia in my courses and I've run workshops for other teachers as well. There's existing material by the WMF and affiliates for introducing Wikipedia in the classroom, but I (and plenty of others I've worked with) have found them unhelpful if not harmful. Education is not the venue for free culture evangelism. The best starting point is that students will visit Wikipedia in any case, so the educator should focus on minimizing harm. The ironic parallels to drug policy (zero tolerance versus risk reduction) are obvious. The existing material is harmful because it ignores what should be the focus in a Wikipedia lesson plan: how to spot bias and dick-waving and how to avoid it. Wikipedia articles can be good entry points for further study and the best ones combine a balanced overview with sensibly popularized expert knowledge. Learning how to spot quality writing like this and distinguish it from crap is something that educators can help with. Delving into Talk pages and dispute resolution logs is boring as all fuck but it should be an eye-opening experience for any teacher.

I find it difficult to believe that it's the most extensive investigation ever. However, its conclusion seems plausible, that 30% of articles have problems. That's not far out of line with my experience with other languages (though I've never looked at the Finnish one). If a reviewer of any proper reference work came to such a conclusion, I bet the publishers would withdraw the book.

I never bothered to interact with this person. It seemed to me that he was one of those relatively commonplace people who conceal their unremarkable ordinariness by affecting a highly-mannered riddle-wrapped-in-a-mystery-inside-an-enigma style of self-presentation: a pose hinting that one could reveal a great truth-- but only at the cost of a great ennui.

[...] I have severe ADHD. If you think you understand it, compare notes with an up-to-date description of the disorder. [Adhd (T-H-L)] It’s nothing like what most people think they understand. [...] Almost without a thought, I mentioned my ADHD at Wikipediocracy with a short explanation of how it affects motivations. I felt I was among friends, after all. I was then diagnosed by another member of having something called Special Snowflake Syndrome. Hmmm. I thought only depression and anxiety were the common co-morbidities, but this person seemed to know better. At that point, another person stepped in with some insight on how the ADHD brain works different from a more typical brain; I knew immediately he was an ADHDer. He understood. [...] Some of the people there weren’t just uninterested in this information, but uncomfortable with it. That’s not uncommon; a lot of people don’t like talking about emotions, for example. But they started demanding that nobody talk about it. Meanwhile, others are throwing around opinions about something that has caused me and the other ADHDer great suffering and that they know fuck all about. I suggest they at least look up the affect of severe ADHD on happiness in childhood. But, as far as I could tell, they didn’t give two shits about me, the other guy, or anyone who wasn’t themselves. One guy I’ve never had any interactions with expressed the general sentiment well: “You seem to be a really nice guy. . . but who cares?” Ah. Good question. I care. And I care enough about my own state of mind to stay out of environments like this. [...]
Wikipedia's article on ADHD, to which Wllm directs the reader, states: "Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, similar to hyperkinetic disorder in the ICD-10) is a psychiatric disorder[1][2] of the neurodevelopmental type[3][4] in which there are significant problems of attention, hyperactivity, or acting impulsively that are not appropriate for a person's age.[5]"; the article links to Attention-deficit_hyperactivity_disorder_controversies (T-H-L), which is also worth reading.

Both articles are under the purview of Wikiproject Medicine, and therefore likely to be rubbish.

The Most Influential Figures On Wikipedia Are White, Western Males
It doesn't matter whether you speak English or Chinese.
Across 24 language editions of Wikipedia, a page-ranking algorithm finds that the top historical figures were mostly post-17th-century white guys.

To be fair, you'd probably find that if you analysed almost any relevant database, though you might get less recentism from some of them.

Yeah. They're well ahead of the field (along with sports journalists). While you get nurses blithely assuming that all the information in Wikipedia must be carefully vetted by medical experts (after all, it's an encyclopedia), no sports fan would subscribe to that belief. One of those strange paradoxes.

Citation needed: Baltimoreans host Wikipedia edit-a-thon
Join Saturday's edit-a-thon to flesh out Baltimore's digital historical record.
Technical.ly, 11 July 2014 link
The City That Reads will soon have a little more to read about itself on Wikipedia. From the Great Baltimore Fire to the 1968 riots, there’s plenty of history inadequately represented on the free encyclopedia, said Jenny Ferretti, organizer of a Wikipedia edit-a-thon set for Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Red Emma’s (30 W. North Ave.) in Charles North. “LIS [library and information science] professionals make fantastic Wikipedia contributors, in my opinion: we know how to find and cite our sources,” she said in an email. “However, I want to use this time to socialize in a casual setting with others who are interested in contributing to Wikipedia. I don’t want to solely do it in the privacy of my own home, by myself. [...] Baltimore’s Civil Rights history is incredibly rich but at the same time largely unknown to the general public, which makes it a perfect candidate for Wikipedia.” On Saturday, Ferretti will be focused on fleshing out some of those articles. Others will be editing on topics including audio-visual history and the Catholic Left. Ferretti said she hopes the event becomes a monthly get-together.
I thought John_Waters (T-H-L) has already said everything there is to say about Baltimore.

I'm always amused by librarians helping to build Wikipedia, oblivious to the fact that such work helps build upon the information trends that put librarians out of work and close down libraries.

I've noticed that librarians who organize edit-a-thons often emit a certain cri de coeur:

Wikipedia prankster labels Mayor Slay an 'atheist'

After about a minute, some script takes you from the full article to a paywall. Perhaps a script blocker would allow the reader to finish the article. In a nutshell: Local politician's Wikipedia entry was vandalized to label him an atheist. -_-

Wikipedia, Sharing Democratically
An open source website that led to the arrival of amateurs in knowledge diffusion
MyScienceNews, 7 August 2014 link
Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia, is now one of the figureheads of the free and open web. Through Sunday, 10 August, this same movement is being celebrated at Wikimania 2014, in London. As the war between the cultural industry lobbyists and free internet supporters is far from over, MyScienceWork took a look back at this democratic tool involved in the open source and free software movements. With over 30 million articles written by volunteers, Wikipedia has paved the way for the advent of amateurs in knowledge diffusion. The beginning of the 2000s corresponds to the Internet boom, with the creation of numerous online companies and the massive popularization of the web 2.0. At that time, Jimmy Wales the founder of Wikipedia, started the Nupedia project, a (free) traditional encyclopaedia with the objective of putting knowledge online. But the lack of commitment from the experts who were called upon to write the articles made Wales drop his initial project for a correction and redaction system open to all via wiki software – a wiki being a website whose pages are easily modifiable from a web browser. [...] According to Patrice Flitchy, professor of sociology at the Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, a specialist in innovation and information techniques and author of the book Le sacre de l’amateur (“The Consecration of the Amateur”): “The success of Wikipedia is probably due to its type of governance, that is the control and monitoring of content by all.” Many media and teaching materials now refer to Wikipedia articles and use their content. Although the content is checked, to a certain point, to guarantee its quality, it is often criticized. However, a study carried out by the journal Nature in 2005 showed that the quality of the content on Wikipedia was similar to that of encyclopaedia Britannica [...]

Five Things Ice-T Teaches Us About Metal
The Boombox, 12 August 2014 link
Ice-T is a very interesting character. With his longstanding career in music and acting, he isn’t afraid to take chances personally and creatively. So when our friends at Loudwire decided to fact-check his Wikipedia page in their video series, ‘Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?,’ they couldn’t fit his almost 30-year career into just one video. [...]
1. The band is called Body Count for many reasons, not just as a reference to the amount of people who were slain in Los Angeles.
Ice-T refers to Body Count as the number of people who check out the band’s show for the first time (“non-believers”) and instantly become fans of their movement. He also refers to it as the amount of fans who go hard in the mosh pit and essentially get beaten up from it.
2. Ice-T believes country-western and hip-hop are all similar when it comes to lyrical content. “Like country-western, they sing about their truck, we sing about our low-rider,” he explains. “They always having problems with their bitches, you know? Like I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. That’s f—ing ghetto boys.” [...] I’ve been very fortunate to work with the heavies,” he shares. “…And the fact that they respect me gives me the ability inside to tell them to f— the f— off.”

These kitsch aficionados and cognoscenti of the under-appreciated arts will not rest until they have memorialized every brain fart that bubbled up from the local tar pits between 1945 and 1975.

East of Borneo: Where Wikipedia goes for SoCal art essays
Los Angeles Times, 10 October 2014 linkhttp://www.latimes.com/entertainment/ar ... olumn.html[/link]
When the series of Pacific Standard Time exhibitions opened around Southern California in 2010, it was an opportunity to take stock of the region's cultural production in the decades following World War II. The Getty Foundation-funded project brought to light work by abstract ceramists, trippy Light and Spacers, heady conceptualists and feminist sculptors. In the process, the exhibitions generated a bounty of information about the history of art in our region. [...] Enter the website East of Borneo. Also launched in 2010, the site, which is partially funded and supported by the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), aimed to capture some of that knowledge and put it on a platform that would be as easily accessible in L.A. as it would be in Cleveland or Calcutta. The site is now celebrating its fourth anniversary and is still run and edited by cofounders Stacey Allan and CalArts professor Tom Lawson. "We didn't want all of this great material to be forgotten in books," says Allan. "We wanted to make it free. And we wanted it to be online. The idea is that some kid in the Midwest can log on and be exposed to what's happened here in Los Angeles." The site has done stories on everything from a totally '70s nondenominational art ministry in Venice called the Temple of Man to stories about Senga Nengudi's early Los Angeles installations. [...]

Image
East of Borneo turns up little bits of uncovered Southern California history,
such as this vintage snapshot of modular furniture from CalArts in the '70s

"We've published some of the most substantial writing on some L.A. figures," says Allan. "Often, our pieces are used as references for Wikipedia pages. Early on, someone linked out to our article about [the Chicano performance group] Asco and it really reinforced how important it was to have something that wasn't behind a paywall." East of Borneo's efforts to get Southern California's history in the proverbial books have extended beyond the reach of their own site. The online magazine has staged regular Wikipedia edit-a-thons to help raise the region's cultural profile in what has become the world's most important online encyclopedia. Now the site is is in the final hours of a crowd-sourced Kickstarter fundraiser to help make improvements. Currently, CalArts supports the site by funding Allan's position and supplying a $15,000 editorial budget. But that is a slim figure for a website with big ideas. The goal on Kickstarter was $25,000, and East of Borneo has already surpassed that. [...] "I'm hoping to make a bigger investment in the editorial side," says Allan. "I want to have paid writers and fact-checking and good editing — all of the things that people are critical of in Web publishing. We want to have our priorities straight. We could publish every day, but we don't. We want to go more in-depth. We want the writing to be smart." [...]
