I have made longtime wikivandal BaseballBrain2016 (T-C-L) blocked indefinitely. He/she primarily changed the ownership of the team featured in an article to that of the victor in said team's last playoff round, as well as other unconstructive edits.

Despite the username, he/she also edits articles pertaining to other major North American professional sports teams, not just baseball teams.

Jose Altuve 'owns' New York Yankees, according to edit on Wikipedia

Someone is having a little fun at the expense of the New York Yankees following their series loss to the Astros on Saturday. On the franchise’s Wikipedia entry, it was edited to reflect that they were now “owned” by Astros star and Game 6 hero Jose Altuve. Altuve hit a two-run home-run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game and clinch the American League pennant for the Astros.

Golding, "who was an awful and pathetic excuse of a defensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide", was the edited version of his profile.

I use it when reading Toronto Star articles such as this.

By the way, here is the full Toronto Star article about the Leafs and their fans vandalizing Wikipedia: https://outline.com/743hwm

The author of that Toronto Star article could have asked me, just like when fellow Toronto Star journalist Oliver Sachgau wrote about me and my contributions to the Toronto Blue Jays article in 2015.

That is a useful tip, thanks. I'll see if it works on British newspapers. I was struck by one phrase:

"“vandals” — how the Wiki community describes the falsehood-spreaders"

To me, a vandal is someone who for example replaces an article with a load of random characters. It doesn't seem appropriate for someone who alters an article neatly to spread a falsehood. But that discussion may deserve its own thread.

WWE Titan Towers Wikipedia page edited to include NSFW Vince McMahon "fact".

WWE has a rich history, but sometimes people like to write their own history. Wikipedia is a very helpful research tool at times, but you also need to be careful especially when the trolls are loose. Titan Towers has been WWE’s Headquarters since 1985. On March 20th, 2019 the company announced they will sell Titan Towers. They are relocating their headquarters to 677 Washington Boulevard in Stamford. Someone edited the Wikipedia entry for Titan Towers to include something that isn’t very TV-PG at all. We’re not sure who did this, but it was inserted into the Wikipedia entry and has been up for quite a while without being taken down.

Someone Edited Mike Florio’s Wikipedia Page After His Twitter Feud With Richard Sherman

A Richard Sherman outburst was set up on a silver platter when he was named to the All-Pro rosters that were released on Friday, and the San Francisco 49ers' star cornerback did not disappoint. Sherman took to Twitter in a diatribe to trash critics who bashed him for negotiating his own contract without an agent in 2018. The veteran defensive back's rant involved a Twitter exchange with ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio, and one particular individual subsequently altered the Wikipedia page of the NFL reporter.

John Barnes has his Wikipedia page hacked in a brilliant way

Anyone can edit Wikipedia's content and these edits to John Barnes' account appears to have gone unnoticed for a while

A prankster has written a long and well-worded amend to the Wikipedia page of England legend John Barnes. Spotted by eagle-eyed football fans, the re-write references the World Cup song World in Motion, a track on which Barnes featured heavily. ...

Under the 'Tactical Approach' section of the page, one mischievous user has written: "Teams managed by Barnes are taught to either hold or give the ball, though crucially they must do it at the right time. When in attack, Barnes' sides attempt to get the ball to the line at a variety of speeds ranging from slow to fast. In team talks Barnes always warns his players to be wary of the opposition's attempts to hit them and hurt them in both defence and attack.
Derby Telegraph

That was added on 30th January and is still what the article says. John_Barnes#Tactical_Approach (T-H-L)

This is really quite funny, but a large part of the humour is likely to be lost on most non-Brits (as it was on me) until they check out the World in Motion video from which the text of the edit was derived. The relevant part of the video is from about the 2'30" mark onwards.

There can't be many pieces of vandalism on Wikipedia that have lasted for weeks despite extensive media coverage. I quoted the Derby Telegraph; the same story appeared in several other local papers and at least one national one, the Daily Star. Indeed, there might be enough coverage to justify a Wikipedia article.

BOXING fans have joked Tyson Fury is up to his old tricks after Anthony Joshua's Wikipedia page was changed to show he has already lost against his rival. Paulo Fonseca has Wikipedia page hacked as fans troll Tottenham over new manager move

Tottenham have opened talks with Paulo Fonseca (T-H-L) to become the club's new manager in time for next season. Spurs have been without a permanent head coach since relieving Jose Mourinho of his duties in mid-April. Mourinho has since been appointed as Roma boss after the role was left vacant by Fonseca himself. ...

Now, some football fans have hijacked Fonseca's Wikipedia page with the news that he looks set to become Spurs' new boss.
football.london

This is the usual misuse of "hacked". The change was made by Joelmoncy (T-H-L), an established if scarcely prolific editor, so it may well have been a misunderstanding rather than vandalism. It was reverted about 2½ hours later.

LOL! Morne Steyn’s Wikipedia page edited after heroics vs Lions

However, the funniest online activity would take place on Wikipedia. Morne Steyn repeated the heroics he displayed in the 2009 series against the Lions, where he also chalked-up the points to see the Boks home. History repeated itself on Saturday, prompting one user to pay the best possible tribute to the 37-year-old.

“Morne Steyn, born 11 July 1984, is a professional lion tamer, having tamed lions in both 2009 and 2021. He specialises in waiting until the last minute to break those lion hearts. He will only be 49 for the next series.”

Geelong Cats get trolled online as Wikipedia page changed to celebrate Melbourne’s Max Gawn

The Cats are already licking their wounds from a preliminary final belting. But it hasn’t stopped some internet trolls from rubbing some more salt into them after their loss to Melbourne. One punter changed Geelong’s Wikipedia profile, saying they were “owned” by Melbourne skipper Max Gawn, who kicked five goals in a man-of-the-match performance for the Demons.

The description was on their Wikipedia page for a number of minutes before it was finally corrected, but after the Demons captain booted four goals in the third quarter to see his side into their first grand final since 2000, it’s hard to argue that it was wrong.

The article is Geelong Football Club (T-H-L). There was a load of vandalism two days ago and it is now semi-protected.

Morales' Wikipedia page changed after controversial NLDS call

Make a bad call in a win-or-go-home postseason game, and the fans will hold you accountable the only way they know how. Through the power of ... Wikipedia?

The Giants' 2021 season came to an end in Game 5 of the National League Division Series after first base umpire Gabe Morales confirmed strike three on a check swing from Wilmer Flores to end the game. Widely believed to be an incorrect call -- even by some Dodgers players -- Morales soon faced the wrath of fans on the internet, who brutally changed his Wikipedia bio. "American Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire. He is legally blind," the description reads. Listed under "Special Assignments": "Ruining the Division Series (2021)".

His bio continues: "He's known for somehow being a worse umpire than Angel Hernandez." NBC Sports Bay Area was unable to fact-check those claims, but the evidence might be damning after Thursday night's game-ending call. Let this be a lesson to any MLB umpire who takes pride in his/her Wikipedia page.

The Gabe Morales (T-H-L) page is currently semi-protected.

Packers superstar Aaron Rodgers officially becomes owner of Bears

Aaron Rodgers made it very clear on Sunday against the Chicago Bears when he said he owned them to their fanbase after running in a touchdown late to put the Green Bay Packers up 24-14. The moment went viral instantly and it trickled down to other outlets as well. According to Wikipedia, the superstar quarterback for the Packers is now listed as the owner of the Bears.

Someone reset Tyler Matzek’s wikipedia page and it’s gold

It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when, the Atlanta Braves will erect a statue in Tyler Matzek’s likeness at The Battery. No pitcher has been more clutch during the Atlanta Braves‘ run to the World Series than southpaw Tyler Matzek.

The left-handed reliever pumps ice through his veins on a regular basis. In the biggest moment of his life in Game 6 of the 2021 NLCS, Matzek came into the bottom of the seventh inning with the Braves up 4-2 on the Los Angeles Dodgers with no outs and runners on second and third. He struck out the side, including punch outs of Albert Pujols and Mookie Betts to save the season. ...

Tyler Matzek gets an NSFW update to his Wikipedia page after NLCS victory.

Wikipedia Fires Wells, Texas Tech Fans Lash Out & Assistant Coach Claps Back

On Saturday, October 23rd, 2021, Matt Wells was fired. No, not by the decision-makers or by anyone at Texas Tech University, although there's plenty of wind in the wire that those decisions are at the very least being discussed behind closed doors. No, Matt Wells was fired by the fanbase on Saturday after that atrocious loss on Saturday to the Kansas State Wildcats. The Red Raiders led 24-10 at halftime. Then, Kansas State scored 15 in the second half, and the Red Raiders were shut out. The final score was 25-24. ...

Wells was even fired on Wikipedia briefly before someone changed it back. For several hours his page read "Former Head Coach" and had October 23rd as his last day at Texas Tech.

Ironically, the Wikipedia vandal was eventually proved right - Matt Wells was fired officially.

Someone in Virginia changed the USC Football Wikipedia page to list Marvin Lewis as head coach instead of Donte Williams

There’s a long history of Wikipedia vandalism around sports events, but the latest thing here seems particularly unusual for not having any real connection to either news or obvious jokes. That would be an edit to the USC Trojans Football page, which listed former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis (seen at left above in his final Bengals’ press conference in 2019) as USC’s interim coach for most of the day Tuesday. (The actual interim coach is Donte Williams, seen at right above, who took that role on Sept. 13 after Clay Helton was fired. And he has a current record of 3-3, unlike the 2-1 listed on his page or the 2-1 listed for Lewis on USC’s page.) Here’s a screenshot of that page from 5:30 p.m. Eastern Tuesday, more than three hours after the change was made from Williams to Lewis (see further discussion of that below; you can also click to embiggen the screenshot):

Wikipedia Toasts Saints QB Siemian, Roasts Bucs and Tom Brady

"If it's on Wikipedia, you know it's true."

You've probably heard that line used a time or two in jest to describe the dubious nature of the information on Wikipedia. This comes from the online encyclopedia's history of allowing anyone to create and edit articles on its site. While Wikipedia has made major strides over its 20-year history to fact check and peer review articles and prohibit vandals from hijacking its pages, occasionally someone will commandeer a Wikipedia page to make a bold statement about someone or something.

The latest example of this: A Wikipedia hijacker updated New Orleans Saints quarterback Trevor Siemian's page to pay tribute to his performance in Sunday's 36-27 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In case you missed it, Siemian entered the game in the second quarter after Saints starting quarterback Jameis Winston suffered a season-ending ACL tear after he was horse-collar tackled by Bucs linebacker Devin White. Siemian was calm and collected, completing 16 of his 29 passing attempts, throwing for 159 yards and a touchdown in his relief appearance.
