Reports suggest someone DDoSed essams, Wikimedias Netherlands based server.
Obviously this is an example that if Wikipedia's European edge server is turned off, then Wikipedia can't be reached in Europe.

For what it's worth a large porton of the Cell service is currently not working in the US. It could be related, but I'm not sure.

Do you have any reporting on this? Regions/areas effected. I see Verizon down for most of the East Coast (FEMA Regions I-III) and a US Cellular map with I-III and a lot of the Central US. Have you heard any reports of land line outages?Kumioko wrote:For what it's worth a large porton of the Cell service is currently not working in the US. It could be related, but I'm not sure.

Well Wikimedia Italy has confirmed it was a DDoS attack on Twitter.
https://twitter.com/WikimediaItalia/sta ... 5309696006
Although they have been making it pretty clear it was an attack for some time now on IRC.

It seems to affect T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon from what I've seen.Jbhunley wrote:Do you have any reporting on this? Regions/areas effected. It seems to affect everything, all networks, East of Kansas City and The western Coast line from Seattle down to San Diego, as well as Southern Texas and the Gulf. So, all the populated Areas of the US.

Down in the midwest via cellular (AT&T IP address), up via fiberoptic (small ISP).

Thank you + mendaliv & Vigilant. It looks like it is just cellular then, not land lines or the trunk lines then. I was afraid I might lose my night to being stuck on a HF radio -- I already spent enough time eying WP while listening to atmospheric noise and M110a modems without an *actual* communications emergency :-)Kumioko wrote:It seems to affect T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon from what I've seen.Jbhunley wrote:Do you have any reporting on this? It seems like a big outage though so if it goes pop at least I won't be surprised.
Enjoy your evenings.

Well some random hackers claimed responsibility on Twitter and were promptly reported to the NCSC by angry Wikimedia devs. No doubt they will be regretting it later.
Embarrassingly the entirety of Wikimedia's European traffic seems to have been routed through a single network switch meaning that DDoS'ing their network was actually absurdly easy.

They also clearly need more money to fix the problem. Give generously. When this DDoS attack happened on Friday, I was kind of hoping the hackers would replace the main page on en:wp with some banner like "Bring Laura Hale to justice". That would be great global exposure.

Re: Wikipedia down in Europe
Yes, hacking is a grossly overused term. Vandalism on Wikipedia is often described in the popular press as hacking, and of course it isn't. To replace the front page, you'd need to either hijack an admin account (which has been done) or penetrate deep into the Wikipedia database.Dysklyver wrote:The "hackers" just overloaded a network switch, there was no chance of anything high effort happening, alas.Ada Sinn wrote:When this DDoS attack happened on Friday, I was kind of hoping the hackers would replace the main page on en:wp with some banner like "Bring Laura Hale to justice".
