#SheSaid (sex bias on Wikiquote)

Unread post by Poetlister » Tue Nov 03, 2020 5:16 pm

E-mail from Florence Devouard.
Did you know that quote

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

was authored by a woman ?

Do you know how many entries on Wikiquote are about women versus Men ?
14639 men entries... for 2977 women entries...

Suprised ?

I am happy to announce the new*#SheSaid campaign*. The #SheSaid drive is
aimed at improving the visibility of women across Wikimedia projects
(and beyond) by creating new or improving already existing Wikiquote
entries spoken by notable women.

Most of this stuff off the Mailing List is Crap that doesn't go anywhere.

Madame Flo-Flo is a former chair of the WMF and very influential. I think this coud go somewhere. The problem is, as with biographical articles on Wikipedia, there are probably far more men than women with recorded interesting quotes.

And when it does go somewhere, it goes into the toilet like GlobalRenaming or YouCock.

I thought this already existed in the form of WWIR writing tons of NN stubs about women.

As an opener to your argument, pointing out the quote attributed to Voltaire is actually his biographer who was summing up Voltaire's actual opinion is a weird "well actually" trivia gotcha.

And yeah, there's two problems with systemic bias on Wikipedia—the editor base, and the reality of history. Even if you could fix the first, short of totally rewriting the concept of history and notability you aren't going to be able to get to equal coverage. 40 years (at best) of increasing gender equality doesn't weigh favorably against the previous six thousand, recentism bias aside.

That was on Wikipedia. We're talking about Wikiquote.

The gender bias on Wikiquote is easy to solve. It should be jettisoned by the WMF. No one will miss it.

It is certainly one of the quieter corners of the WMF empire. However, that does mean that it is a relatively relaxing place to edit.

Still half the admin team, eh?

More seriously, Wikiquote is in fact one of the three minor projects I've made good use of as a reader, the other two being Wiktionary (which is if anything the default dictionary for young people with an interest in linguistics) and Wikivoyage. I'm always a bit surprised when people mention any of the three as useless microprojects. Probably the one of them I've used least, though.

A textbook solution.

Most amateurs pose problems that can be easily solved by annihilation.

I think the disparity is a fairly predictable reflection of human history and culture as a whole rather than contributors there deliberately ignoring quotes from women. And so, in many areas, there will never be parity. There aren't a lot of great quotes from 13th-century female historians in Europe or female politicians in early American history because they were purposefully excluded from these areas. This is not to say this isn't a real issue overall, and I would guess that like en.wp the majority of contributors at wikiquote ore probably white dudes.

I've never contributed there myself, but I do use it once in a while when I want to be sure I'm correctly stating and attributing a quote.

As to the awful Simple Wiktionary article LB screengrabbed, yeah, that sucks, no argument there. Looks like it was created by a user named Hydriz in 2010, at a time when he was creating new entries every few minutes, most of them not very good, for example this shitty definition: link "Flute: a musical instrument" which sucks also, without the added bonus being misogynistic.
