My question, to this esteemed Wiki community, is this: Do you think that a Wiki could successfully generate a useful encyclopedia? -- JimboWales
Yes, but in the end it wouldn't be an encyclopedia. It would be a wiki. -- WardCunningham (Jan 2001)

That's an archive URL. The post was republished to get the search engine bots back in.Hex wrote:That appears to have broken the old post url: https://wikipediocracy.com/2016/03/21/m ... s-waynerayZoloft wrote:Blog post updated by the author, drawing attention to WMF lack of action.
Maybe I can later on just duplicate it so there will be a copy at both URLs.
Edit: or place a quick redirect.
It's amazing that you can't change the slug (link) to be whatever you want on a post.
I decided just to move the update back to the original link.

I can't believe no one has started an RFC or anything about this on Meta and the WMF hasn't done anything either. If someone doesn't beat me to it or I don't get blocked first I am going to start an RFC on Meta to globally block this guy.

This is a difficult one. Should photos taken by a child molested be deleted? The deletion request on Commons is concerned with copyright, not the misconduct of the (alleged) photographer. A reasonable comparison: I once gave a child a book on how to play chess. Subsequent to that, the author went to prison for sex offences. Should I have taken the book back? There was nothing in it that could harm a child.thekohser wrote:Once again, I wield great powers on Wikipedia, even though I am purportedly banned.

IMO that question is best answered by stating it would depend on the pictures. If he was taking pictures of birds, bushes or trees, I would say no they are fine. But taking pictures of other peoples children (and this is not specific to a convicted sex offender BTW) who don't have the ability to give consent is probably not ok.Poetlister wrote:This is a difficult one. I have to admit I am disappointed, ashamed and generally unimpressed with the turnout for the Global ban on this fella. I am 100% certain that a part of that lack of turnout is my popularity with the admins but still. I would think that they would put their pettiness aside but I guess I'm wrong.
It's pretty telling of the priorities of the staff, admins and functionaries on the WMF sites. They don't seem to mind a convicted sex offender having access to the sites and being in a situation to potentially endanger others but criticize them and your out!

I think you're attributing the small turn-out to the wrong cause. Meta is ignored by most. Not enough interesting things happens there to warrant users checking it daily. You have to spread the word around. In fact, the Global bans policy requires word to be spread around. I've alerted the Commons community and other communities to the discussion's existence:Kumioko wrote:I have to admit I am disappointed, ashamed and generally unimpressed with the turnout for the Global ban on this fella. Thanks. That's possible, but I have seen a pretty good turnout to other things and I posted it to the Forum page on Meta that has a decent amount of watchers so plenty of folks know it's there. It's pretty much whatever though at this point. All I can do is create the page, I can't perform the action so if the people who can aren't interested for whatever reason then it's on them.Michaeldsuarez wrote:I think you're attributing the small turn-out to the wrong cause. Re: Meet the editors: WayneRay
There's still no Oppose section. I suppose that a Wikilawyer could challenge the result on that basis. The closest to a dissent comes from Billinghurst: "Comment The user has been blocked at enWS, though the reasons for the block were due to actions on another wiki, which generally would not be consistent with our local policy there, and more would seem to be an overly enthusiastic approach by an individual admin. So please don't use the block at enWS as evidence of behaviour. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:31, 19 April 2016 (UTC)"
As has been noted, Cirt has blocked him on WQ, WN and WS although he's never edited on WQ or WN, and not edited WS since 2009. Certainly on WQ and WS, that would be totally out of order and grounds for a strong rebuke for Cirt if WayneRay were not a serious criminal, but that's Cirt for you.

That is exactly why I didn't list them in the proposal. I only listed EnWP and Commons because those were the ones he was active in and since the requirement was that the person should be indef blocked/banned in at least 2 wiki's that was enough.Poetlister wrote:There's still no Oppose section. So whatever Lewis did was apparently forgivable in the eyes of Lewis' Miraheze colleagues. Unfortunately, the WMF isn't very forgiving.

One hopes that the WMF's infallibility is greater than that of U.S. universities and colleges, which do not meet the standards of police & courts when investigating claims of sexual harassment and rape.

I'm sure Wikia's ownership and investors will appreciate your volunteered security measures, thus alleviating them of paid staff hours that otherwise would have had to address the problem. Good work, Kumioko.

I didn't see anything troubling. There are about 500 page scans from old books; I spot checked several and didn't note any vintage erotica. The rest a mixed bag but on the whole much better than the Commons average. A few old college social life pictures and a handful from a small Atlanta parade left me thinking Commons isn't Flickr, but there were many historical black and white photos and scans of celebrity autographs.
Here's his contribution history:

As for troubling content, I just didn't see anything. Commons already has more than enough.
