Re: Cyrus Farivar and his Hoaxes
Almost 2 days and no comments yet? As I suspected, no one gives a shit about this story. Seriously, what excuse is there for Farivar not to have a BLP? Is there ANY sane reason, other than "he was mean and he made fun of us"? Just because it happened 8-10 years ago doesn't make it "go away" or "invalid". How many other people who could pass notability requirements don't have biographies and people who shouldn't do?
Farivar mentions it right on the front page of his website. He's not hiding it either.

Hi everyone,
There's currently a page in the English wiki (and also in the Occitan one) and nobody seems to try to delete it right now.
Take care,

Well, well, well. Created on Thursday by a little-used sockpuppet called Alexgoldmark (T-C-L).
Once again, Wikipediocracy, despite being "that evil forum", still has clout over Wikipedia. Ha ha ha. Fools.
(Okay, dicks, now where's your "neutral" Denise Milani article?)

Eh. He's probably better off without the article. BLPs are a convenient way to slander a person.

Which is why I'm a bit of a BLP zealot. For barely marginal people they are magnets for any shit someone wants to throw at them and they won't be sufficiently patrolled to protect them from the crap.

Re: Cyrus Farivar and his Hoaxes
The vast majority of Wikipedia's biographical articles are inappropriate. Must run into the tens of thousands. I was wondering how many articles are in their "living people" category; couldn't figure it out. Ah, over 709,000. Upgrading to "hundreds of thousands" being inappropriate.
But did run into a rather... Wikipedian category while on that page:Cat:Living people on the English Wikipedia who are dead on other Wikipedias. There are currently 34 articles so categorized.
There are 3,850 articles in Wikipedia's Possibly living people category,

Re: Cyrus Farivar and his Hoaxes
Why every BLP isn't under pending changes is beyond me.
To think that you really need random, anonymous people writing stuff about named persons in an online "encyclopedia" without doing even the most basic checking before taking it live is so fundamentally stupid that I feel myself losing IQ points just typing this out.

Re: Cyrus Farivar and his Hoaxes
It's one of those things that just makes too much sense. If you don't want pending changes for the whole site, just implement for articles in Category:Living people (T-H-L).Why every BLP isn't under pending changes is beyond me.
Or maybe they think it would get in the way of making sure certain people get hagiographies that don't mention their widely reported misdeeds, while other people still get the kind of baseless defamation the post-Seigenthaler incident policies were supposedly created to prevent.

Re: Cyrus Farivar and his Hoaxes
Were this ever implemented, it would be interesting to watch people getting round it by putting BLP material in other articles such as ones about particular incidents, or the person's home town or employer.Vigilant wrote:Why every BLP isn't under pending changes is beyond me.

Re: Cyrus Farivar and his Hoaxes
It would be a step in the right direction, but would be of limited use, for the reasons given in the last few posts and because anyone starting a new article might "easily forget" to mark it as a BLP.Vigilant wrote:It should be implemented tomorrow.

Re: Cyrus Farivar and his Hoaxes
Kind of like closing the gun show loophole for background checks? Something that is not a complete solution but needs to be done. We can just give up and say criminals will always find ways to get guns, just as we can give up and say BLP violators will always find ways to get around pending changes. It would be a step in the right direction, but would be of limited use, for the reasons given in the last few posts and because anyone starting a new article might "easily forget" to mark it as a BLP.
