Lessig for President!

Unread post by thekohser » Sun Aug 16, 2015 2:44 am

Appropriate for the "Internet fads and fallacies" department, I think, is the Lawrence Lessig for President (Democrat, 2016) campaign.

Image

I thought this was a bit of a joke, but then when I saw who was the campaign manager, that's when I knew it must surely be a complete joke. At best, a scam to bilk donors out of their money, for no productive outcome.

Image

Why am I not surprised that the campaign has chosen Fenton Communications (T-H-L) as their PR firm, a company with two big contracts with the government of Qatar... whose Qatar Foundation donates to the Wikimedia Foundation and spruces up its own Wikipedia page with paid PR editors -- the thing that Jimmy Wales supposedly hates so much. Hypocrites, as always.

I wonder who wrote Fenton Communications' wiki page?

Here's a paid editor tidying up for Fenton.

Hmmm, a righty libertarian who law clerked for reactionaries, then saw the light to become a tepid centrist obsessed with copyright law reform and crowd-funding...

Perfect match.

On the same day that President Lessig signs the Citizens Equality Act of 2017 into law, he will step down, and the elected vice president will become the new President. So, who gets picked for vice president is vital to this plan, because they will likely serve in the Oval Office someday.

The good news is that America will get two great presidents for the price of one, where a vote for Lessig supports a referendum and it’s also a vote for your other favorite candidate (who will serve as VP). So, who do you nominate to be his VP? Show us your #dreamticket by voting below!

Lessig was one of the the guys that filled a teenage Swartz's head with so much nonsense he ended up in front of the beak on Federal charges.

As for VP I suggest Josef Vissarionovich Djugashvili.

Jimmy Fallon skewered Lessig the other night. Made fun of how tiny Lessig's eyeglasses are, then said that his whole face looks tiny on his head (upon which they altered the video of Lessig talking, so that his eyes and mouth kept getting closer and closer to the end of his nose). It really did look funny. I'd say the campaign is sunk if cool-guy-of-youth, Jimmy Fallon, has already dismissed it as a joke.

Dunno, with The Donald running away with the Republican nomination, it just may be that joke candidacies are "in" this year...

Apparently, Lessig and Wales will be doing a Reddit AMA on Tuesday, August 25th. Make sure we show up to put them to the test.

I'm curious how much the Campaign Manager gig pays and what made Jimmy Wales qualified in any way to assume such a role for a national campaign...

Jimmy Wales is qualified to do anything as long as he can produce a reliable source for each fact he quotes.

I wonder if Lessig knows just how ethically damaged Jimmy is.
What will he say when he finds out that Jimmy pals around with despotic dictatorial regimes and takes money from them to whitewash their reputations?

Apparently they talked about him for about 5 minutes on The Rachel Maddow Show last night, though he didn't appear personally. I guess they don't give him much of a shot, but he'll be included in some of the next few polls, FWIW. (Don't worry though, as long as Jimbo's involved he won't get much above 0.0%.)

He might take some votes away from Bernie Sanders in the primaries, but I doubt it'll be enough to be the most significant cause of Bernie actually losing any primaries.

I've said elsewhere (though I can't find the specific post at the moment) that I don't blame Lessig for doing this, and that aside from Jimbo being a terrible choice to run anything, his involvement isn't something I'd consider wrong for him to be doing either. That said, the points being made now about how if he does somehow win, Lessig's "mandate" won't necessarily translate into legislation, are completely salient. If the Republicans maintain control of both houses of Congress, they'll basically laugh at him. And even if the Democrats manage to win back both houses next year, which is very unlikely even with that many people actually deciding to vote for Lessig, he'll still have a hard time getting them to do this stuff. Whoever is in Congress, ultimately he'll have to try shaming them into doing it, and very few of these people have any shame.

And finally, from conspiracy-land, given that Lessig teaches at Harvard, you almost have to wonder if stories like this one from Slate.com aren't just a coinkydink.

[cross-posted from The Logic Museum Forum]

Lessig's campaign was discussed for more than five minutes straight on the Rachel Maddow show. She gave it a mildly positive but realistically dismissive review.

Lessig got a much nicer treatment with an actual interview on Chris Hayes' All In show: linkhttp://www.msnbc.com/all-in/watch/lawre ... 2555715709[/link]

Bear in mind the two men are friends (which Chris Hayes disclosed).

No mention of Jimbo Wales in either piece.

Jimbo's doing wonders as Lessig's committee chair. In New Hampshire (right across the border from Lessig's Harvard job site), he is now garnering less than one-half of 1% of the Democratic intended vote!

That's what I call traction.

It's a shame. I only know Lessig from his books - Republic Lost and Free Culture - both insightful. I don't know why he got involved with Jimmy or why he thinks this silly plan would work. If I remember right he thought the best chance to get money out of campaigns was a constitutional convention. I wonder what changed.

Getting involved with Jimbo was definitely a mistake, and a colossal one, but I guess he was looking to do the whole thing as cheaply as possible, and Jimbo has been in the news a lot lately with that sort of thing. He fell for the con, in other words. Frankly, Lessig is probably only about half as smart as he thinks he is, though that still makes him smarter than most people.

The fact is, a constitutional convention is most likely the only way to fix the system to the required extent, but right now the Republicans have so much money and media control, it simply won't happen. Lessig must have figured that out, so this Presidential campaign stunt thingy was probably the only other thing he could think of. Or else someone else thought of it, and convinced him to do it because he has better name recognition than that person, whoever it was.

The sensible explanation is that he's not trying to win, just get people talking about it, get more exposure for the issue, etc. Jimbo's involvement won't help, but if he can be persuaded to move aside and let experienced people handle the PR and outreach activity, if not the whole thing, some good might still come out of it.

It takes $1 million to accomplish that?

Jimbo, maybe? That would explain a lot.

Jimbo latches on to anyone he thinks will make Jimbo look better.

When Jimbo got his poop pushed back in on the Lessig reddit AMA, I imagine that Lessig might have had an epiphany about his committee chairman.

Lessig is an idealist who hasn't had a foot on the ground in decades.

He gave a presentation at wikimania 2006 that was a glorification of the mashup, and which argued that copyright law shouldn't prohibit mashups because mashups are such wonderful creative works that we need to foster and protect. Of course, mashup culture lasted about a year (thank heavens), but Lessig was completely onboard with the idea that we should deeply curtail copyright, including author's rights, in order to preserve the right of derivative hacks to make superficial and derivative works out of other's actually original creative works, simply because a copyright lawyer with no esthetic taste finds them amusing.

I think copyright law has swung way too far to the side of the corporate copyright producer, but I don't think the answer is to destroy author's rights (even more so than they've already been destroyed).

Lessig is good at identifying problems in the law. He is very bad at identifying solutions to those problems, and has no skill at all at understanding why the solutions he does propose will not help. I think this is largely because his ideology is a crockpot mix of libertarianism and communitarianism, that argues that we should give everyone maximum liberty because people are naturally good and will therefore not abuse that liberty. A noble position, perhaps, but not one that survives thirty seconds in the real world.

I read his book on lobbying reform a couple years ago, and while he correctly identifies the problems, the solutions he proposes are all impossible to implement, trivial to circumvent, or both. Par for the course for an ivory tower academician, I suppose.

If you want to buy TV ads, absolutely - it's basically chump change. There are already websites and civic organizations devoted to this sort of thing - MoveToAmend.org, for example, which I guess is an offshoot of MoveOn.org. But if you want to get the word out specifically to people who are already engaged in US politics, horning in on an election campaign seems like a logical way to do it, and for that you need a staff, TV ads, yada yada.

I'm not saying he'll have any actual effect whatsoever, of course.

Where is Larry? No room on the stage for the million-dollar crackpot with a gimmick?

Maybe he and Jimbo are still backstage brawling over who gets to be the attention whore on this particular stage.

Today I learned that some of the most foolish people can be easily parted from their money. Such fools would include the following:
Tech leaders in California form a big part of Lessig’s donor base. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales (T-H-L), Medium CEO Evan Williams (Internet entrepreneur) (T-H-L), WordPress developer Matt Mullenweg (T-H-L), and Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle (T-H-L) all contributed the maximum $5,400 to his campaign. Lessig’s alliance with Silicon Valley dates back to his work on Internet copyright law and his co-founding of the Creative Commons. Sci-fi film director J.J. Abrams (T-H-L) and his wife, Kathleen McGrath, also chipped in the max, as did Cenk Uygur (T-H-L), host of the left-leaning online news show The Young Turks.

Almost 10 percent of Lessig’s million came from Massachusetts, the second-biggest state in his fundraising totals behind California. Maxed-out $5,400 contributors from the Boston area include capital investors such as Dan Nova (T-H-L) of Highland Capital Partners; Arnold Hiatt (T-H-L), the retired former president of Stride Rite and a longtime ally of Lessig’s in the effort to get money out of politics; and Joichi Ito (T-H-L), director of the MIT Media Lab, and his wife, Mizuka Ito (T-H-L), co-founder of ConnectedCamps, a camp for Minecraft-playing kids. Ophelia Dahl (T-H-L), president and executive director of the international aid organization Partners in Health, gave $2,700.
Anyone want to take a guess how many of those Wikipedia bios have had the attention of paid editors?

At least that's $5400 that won't be used to prop up TPO stock.

Just putting this here, so that we have some closure on this idiot and his even more idiotic campaign committee chair.

Add Lessig's campaign to the heap of utter failures involving Jimmy Wales.

He is the Shit Midas.

To be fair, I doubt that it would have done significantly better without him.
