December 2015 Arbitration Committee Elections
I reckon it's time to have a dedicated thread on this by now - nominations start in 12 hours!
(There are a few posts in the "Is the community losing patience with the Arbcom?" thread which could be moved over here.)

Peryglus, I await your assessments of the candidates, when they present.Peryglus wrote:I reckon it's time to have a dedicated thread on this by now - nominations start in 12 hours!

I'd like to vote for Euralyus, but, like anyone showing any sign of clue, he's running for the hills.
And I can't argue with that.

Re: December 2015 Arbitration Committee Elections
Yeah its going to be interested who applies this year. Nearly anyone who might be remotely qualified isn't running. Anyone think NewYorkBrad will run again? Or maybe Kirill, he is in the hotseat right now over the Eric block but he seems to be positioning himself for another run.Jim wrote:Peryglus, I await your assessments of the candidates, when they present.Peryglus wrote:I reckon it's time to have a dedicated thread on this by now - nominations start in 12 hours!

It could, however, significantly reduce the scope on WO for legitimate complaints about WP, meaing that there would be more posts on WO about nonsensical complaints.Newyorkbrad wrote:The ArbCom has no power to reform Wikipediocracy.Zoloft wrote:Is time ripe for a Wikipediocracy reform slate of candidates?

I used to root for reform slates. This year, I think a "hasten the day" slate would be more ... interesting:
Kevin Gorman, Gamaliel, Collect, Resolute, Beyond My Ken.

Ent seems to be quite lenient and tactical when it comes to Valued Content Creator types.
I guess someone like HJ Mitchell would fit well on that sort of trigger happy "ban everyone" slate. I remember him writing that he was considering running for Arbcom.

Given that he also just got his password cracked discovered, after reusing it somewhere else like a dipshit and had to be emergency desysopped, I think he's on the Hasten The Day team whether he knows it or not.
Edit: No cracking took place, thanks to someone for nudging me to clarify that.
Wow, that's really fucking professional and looks really great to casual (non-Wikipedian) readers. Clearly the kind of person that Wikipedia needs at its top level of dispute resolution.Salvidrim! wrote: Fuck it, I'll be the first to throw my hat in.

I think you are recalling a conversation he had with Kudpung, who was, at the time, slapping him on the back for his "insightful" WifiOne evidence (which was actually laughably shallow, barely researched, and, erm, just very wrong, really).
Kudpung should also be a part of "Team Hasten The Day". His faux "support" for RFA reform arguments, in order to actually maintain the status quo, should be a Wikipedia essay, or how-to.

Re: December 2015 Arbitration Committee Elections
Besides having good judgment, the ability to collaborate with a large group of people and a deep knowledge of policies, it's important for arbitrators to both be receptive to comments and complaints from editors yet also have a very thick skin because even the most well-received arbitrators are the subject of abuse and diatribes. Having those five qualities is very difficult to find.
Then, if you consider that potential arbs shouldn't have been involved in lots of controversy or made any major miscalls and that they actually want to be an arbitrator, and the pool of appropriate candidates gets even smaller.

So stand. Most folks would, as far as I can tell, support you, and you seem, to me, to fit your own description. Alternatively you could have any number of arbs with the skill of saying very little in lots of meaningless words. Throw a rock at any Arbcom from the last 5 years and you are bound to hit one.Hex wrote:The first comment on the candidates list is by Salvidrim!, who starts:Wow, that's really fucking professional and looks really great to casual (non-Wikipedian) readers. Who should run for Arb in 2015?
I see a lot of complaints about admin and Arbs here, some more useful than others, but seldom real solutions. With that in mind, I'm curious as to who you think should (or shouldn't) run for Arb this go around. Arb has managed to grab a good deal of power since it's creation, and has demonstrated it can be a force for positive change or it can screw up life for a good number of editors. Without question, it isn't going away or going to be changed anytime soon, so all we can do is elect who we think will represent the community, and cross our fingers.
Who do you trust enough that you wish they would run? Why?

Re: Who should run for Arb in 2015?
Not going to happen. I wouldn't have started the thread if that was even a remote possibility. I appreciate the compliment (or was it more of a death wish, it's hard to tell with these things), but I have no hunger for the power, no patience for the hassle, and no time for the burden.Jim wrote:Dennis Brown. I'm not suggesting any of them is perfect but Risker has the corporate memory and, notwithstanding Vigilant's characterisations, she's smart and sharp and organised. Yes she's sometimes wrong, but the others will be able to handle her.Jim wrote:AnthonyhcoleAnthonyhcole wrote:Bishonen

Wait, Risker? Minus 10 points at least.

Nobody.
Anyone who is trustworthy enough for the job has probably been driven from Wikipedia long ago. And even if they haven't, a few months on ArbCom will remove any of their redeeming qualities.

I was going to point out you missed my Risker comment in an edit conflict, but then you replied and added SlimVirgin.Anthonyhcole wrote:I think I'd be awsome, but I'm just too lazy and irresponsible. ;o)Jim wrote:AnthonyhcoleAnthonyhcole wrote:Bishonen

What? Vote for her because she's been inoffensive for a bit and you didn't examine her history?
Or purely "this side of the playground is Gender Gap A, and you lot line up over there"?

Awilley (calm, fair, experienced but not entrenched in the bureacracy)
Berean Hunter (disclaimer: I know him in real life, very level headed, always brings beer when he visits, I nom'ed him for admin)
Anna Frodesiak (followed her for years, nom'ed her for admin, talked off wiki, very solid person)
Worm (again)
Reaper Eternal (just enough of a wild card to keep it interesting, very experienced)
Jimbo (just because the drama it would cause would be freaking hilarious)
