Admin Dreadstar Desysoped, Called Editor a [CENSORED]

Unread post by Triptych » Sun Apr 12, 2015 11:59 am

I saw where Arbcom desysoped this administrator Dreadstar by motion. That seems infinitely better than a huge arbitration. Jeez, remember that Bwilkins arbitration? Dragged on forever.

Dreadstar sent some angry response email to an editor. In that response Dreadstar apparently called the editor "motherfucker." The other bases for desysoping Arbcom gave were that he or she protected (locked it to all except admins) an article that he or she had been edit-warring, and finally that he or she unblocked (gasp!) an editor when the blocking admin didn't respond to queries about it.

If you want to read about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: ... desysopped.

I like that Arbcom bypassed the rigmarole of a massive arbitration. Still I'd like to know more, such as how the motion came to be raised. Any arbitrator decides to raise the desysop motion and off the arbs go? It looks like Salvio raised it, as he was the first to vote for it?

Roger Davies may have shed light on the true impetus, where he comments "NE Ent Dreadstar has unilaterally reversed an arbitration action before and has already been given the benefit of the doubt. Roger Davies talk 06:18, 28 March 2015 (UTC)." So, perhaps Dreadstar offended Arbcom's sense of self-authority. I looked briefly at the unblock (it's of Mark Bernstein) and Dreadstar seemed to reason it out and explain it. Is unblocking an editor the unforgiveable administrative sin?

As for "motherfucker," well that did work against him at least. I'd say a lesser factor. That's an unfortunate emphasis swear word here in the USA. People think they sound tough when they say "motherfucker" a lot. I hope that hasn't spread to other English-speaking lands.

The case also illustrates again the "Super Mario" phenomenon. For stuff that would get a common editor blocked (though perhaps short-term) action against the administrator ceases after desysoping. This phenomenon is named, for anyone that doesn't know, for the video game character Mario. In the video game, Mario "powers up" on eating a mushroom IIRC. In his powered-up condition he may not be killed, only de-powered. In terms of Wikipedia administration, there's no good reason to go by that. It's unreasonable deference to administrators. Without necessarily meaining to endorse the result with Dreadstar here, in principle why not desysop and additionally block for a week?

Anyhow, I don't want to be seen as crabbing about Arbcom. Maybe it did something good here, at least process-wise, by eliminating the rigmarole.

Dreadstar indefinitely blocked himself and, now being without tools, cannot unblock himself. I suppose he has enough friends on the inside that when he does return, his request for unblocking will be granted.

Technically, self-blocking has always been against the rules. Maybe it is courtesy to him to leave the block be?

No. Because it is done routinely, often as a stupid mistake or for "lulz".

Re: Admin Dreadstar Desysoped, Called Editor a [CENSORED]

Unread post by Demonology » Mon Apr 13, 2015 3:43 pm

The Final Days of Dreadstar certainly were interesting bits of drama. I can't say I quite understand why some editors go so crazy over info boxes, especially over hidden text about an info box. In Dreadstar's case, I suppose the poor lad had been dealing with the endless drama and sheer insanity from the Gamergate Controversy-related editors, and he did have Hipocrite (T-C-L) gunning for him...

I am curious as to what all exactly happened that led up to the motion to desysop him, as there seems to be some interesting twists and turns. In early March it seems he may have been getting ready to retire. He unblocked Martinphi (T-C-L) and got his hand slapped for it.

Shortly after, he famously called Mark "Gamergate is going to kill me!" Bernstein a motherfucker in an email after MarkBernstein (T-C-L) began flailing and squirming like a plastic bag caught in a draft because Dreadstar topic banned him after MarkBernstein ignored the many, many, warnings and agreements he had made to stop commenting about other editors.

After being dogpiled upon, Dreadstar announced he was done with Gamergate and MarkBernstein, and was leaving the burden to the community. (Fun fact: Squiggleslash (T-C-L), one of the dogpilers that came to support MarkBernstein in this matter as well as on the subsequent Arbitration cases was a zombie account (dormant since 2008) that MarkBernstein stealth canvassed over Twitter. Protonk (T-C-L) may have been Twitter canvassed as well and possibly others.)

Dreadstar seemingly was editing/admining with relative normality for a few weeks until he joined in the "hidden text about info boxes" edit war. HJ Mitchell (T-C-L) blocked Dreadstar for a day due to his conduct on the Laurence Olivier article, but he was unblocked by HJ in under an hour. Dreadstar allegedly also emailed The Rambling Man (T-C-L) and insulted other editors.

As soon as he was unblocked, Dreadstar immediately retired, and then unblocked Chunk5Darth (T-C-L), "released" MarkBernstein from the topic ban, and snapped at Bbb23 for trying to help him format (and revealed that the MarkBernstein unban was solely out of spite).

The next day, the Dreadstar Rage Quit continued and an IP editor also appeared on Dreadstar's Talk page to 'help' him out. Whatever they posted was revdel'd for WP:OUTING and personal attacks. To conclude his conniption fit, Dreadstar removed the arbitration block from MarkBernstein since HJ Mitchell hadn't responded yet (it had been less than 24 hours),told Bbb23 he expected to be desysopped soon but he was retiring anyway, played the 'What happened, China, you used to be cool' card on Newyorkbrad, raged at HJ Mitchell for not immediately responding to emails, and then blocked himself with one last bit of rage: "Pick your poison".

Despite MarkBernstein repeatedly having declared himself WP:NOTHERE and saying he was done with Wikipedia over the past few months and being an all around asinine, problematic twit, HJ Mitchell refused to reblock him because: "It seemed unfair to use him as fodder in a dispute between two admins." (Speaking of which, can anyone explain why admins, some of which have his home and cell numbers, keep bending over backwards for the deranged, paranoid MarkBernstein? Or why an arb clerk tweets at him?)

Pretty strange all around. Why was Dreadstar so passionate about info boxes? Did he really care or was he already planning to rage quit Wikipedia and that was an easy out? What transpired between him and HJ that Dreadstar unblocked MarkBernstein solely as an attack against Harry, to the point Harry wouldn't reblock due to it being part of a "dispute" between them? Maybe these answers shall be revealed in the future, because I doubt Dreadstar will be 'retired' for long.

Interesting stuff!

I realized that the desysoping of Dreadstar, who unblocked Mark Bernstein, who is an influential Internet critic of Arbcom's punishing those feminist-oriented Gamergate editors, is an extended effect of that conflict. So, if you dare defend Anita Sarkeesian against those that call her a lying whore and a slut, or even unblock one of those that defended her, Arbcom and Salvio Giuliano will come at you all guns blazing.

I can only presume the arbitration case on GamerGate put him under considerable pressure, even if it was not public, and Mark's related meltdowns over that case are another factor in driving Dreadstar mad. As I am a member her and responsible for both occurrences I am officially claiming this admin scalp for the Glorious Republic of Wikipediocracy.

I don't find it all that objectionable; at least it doesn't denigrate a particular cultural or ethnic group, or violate the WMF terms of service. You're not going to be able to take public transportation in most major U.S. cities without hearing it. I hear it constantly at work (although it would of course be NSFW in a proper office environment).

For anyone curious about the word itself, there is actually some research, see Who's Swearing Now: The Social Aspects of Conversational Swearing Also urban dictionary, definition 5 and 6. It's a hugely versatile word, and has the advantage of being universally offensive regardless of race or gender. It functions much like a pronoun, making it hard to follow a conversation that is accidentally overheard, especially since the word is typically used in every single sentence, because you have to be able to track the antecedents. For example, "I was on that street" becomes "I was on that muthafucka". If the word follows the same trajectory as rap music and droopy pants, it should spread from the prisons to the streets to the privileged white kids in the suburbs. Presumably, Europe remains immune to such things.

After TParis turned in his tools and retired, he returned to fire this off at Salvio guiliano, without bothering to sugarcoat it.

Things like hidden text in infoboxes are nothing by themselves, but all of the frustrations and petty annoyances surrounding the corruptocracy that is Wikipedia can easily become "death of a million tiny cuts".

Maybe Dreadstar was someone previously who shouldn't have been able to edit or become an admin? An Archtransit type thing? Just trying to make plausible guesses. It usually does take a HELL of a lot to get anyone desysopped, as we've all seen. Worse has been done and overlooked.

Because MarkBernstein's POV matched the POV of several of the other admins involved in GamerGate and similar topics. So, they look out for him. Same thing happened with Mathsci because he was helping "protect" the Race and Intelligence topic area.
