Another day, another Gamergate ArbCom case

Unread post by Konveyor Belt » Mon Nov 10, 2014 6:13 pm

Been IIRC three requests already, one before the Discretionary Sanctions and two after.

The discretionary sanctions are kept at WP:GS/GG (T-H-L) and there is no evidence thus yet that they have either failed or succeeded, which is why the first post DS case was declined last week. Yesterday another was started, located for the time being at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#GamerGate (T-H-L)

Past case requests from new to old:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?ti ... =632393235

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?ti ... =630025615

For my part, I think that the Arbs should take a case to focus on the behavior of several editors in the topic area, not just the BLP disputes.

Agh, 54 "named parties" and almost no actual blocks or restrictions. This is going nowhere. It will be another Eastern European battle, never ending and involving hundreds of socks.

What a lovely Twat Salad. The gift that keeps on giving.

Easy to predict this is one of those arbitrations that will never, ever be closed. I have better things to do with my miserable life, so unless something "earthshaking" happens, I'm going to ignore it.

Done. BTW, I might note that originally, when the request was opened on 10 November, there were 54 complainants listed. Today, the case was moved to an "official" page, and the number of "combatants" was magically reduced to 26. You can thank little shit Ks0stm for that.

The whole thing is a joke anyway. You and I both know that the people like Ryulong and NorthbySouthBaranof already know how to game the ArbCom system, while their opposition are new here. Look at the case pages, they're already doing it.

Not just that, but he is also obsessed with anime-inspired smartphone games as well, including Puzzle & Dragons (T-H-L) It has many collabs with many anime series.

Chance that the pronunciation of Ryulong approximates to "are you long" wasn't key in his choice of screen name?

Ryulong's name means dragon dragon; the first half (ryu) being Japanese and the second half (long) being Mandarin.

Mandarin approximated Pinyin. And it's not really since it's missing the diacritic marks for pronunciation and can have more than several meanings depending on pronunciation and context.

For example, from the first pinyin site I pulled up
篢lǒng
屸lóng
儱lǒng
儱lóng
儱lòng
咙lóng
哢lòng
嚨lóng
垄lǒng
垅lǒng
壟lǒng
壠lǒng
嶐lóng
巃lóng
巄lóng
弄lòng
徿lòng
徿lǒng
拢lǒng
攏lǒng
昽lóng
曨lóng
朧lóng
栊lóng
梇lòng
槞lóng
櫳lóng
泷lóng
湰lóng
滝lóng
漋lóng
瀧lóng
爖lóng
珑lóng
瓏lóng
癃lóng
眬lóng
矓lóng
砻lóng
硦lòng
礱lóng
礲lóng
窿lóng
竉lǒng
竜lóng
笼lóng
笼lǒng
篭lóng
篭lǒng
籠lóng
籠lǒng
聋lóng
聾lóng
胧lóng
茏lóng
蘢lóng
蠪lóng
蠬lóng
襱lóng

贚lòng

Granted, although Johnny is probably right. When Ryu was 13 years old, he had a Geocities page that was full of blather about dragons.
He is a poster child for Internet dork syndrome. Probably masturbates to gay dragon porn or somesuch.

That's Wikipedia.

(Message for Ryu, you little shit: don't bother contacting archive.org to get that page removed, we took screenshots.)

Eric, that probably explains why he is obsessed with Puzzle & Dragons. That smartphone game has a few hundred dragons, including this gem (right-click to view it in full):

Related:

Despite the promotion of his funding project on the subreddit, and his apparent payment from an anti-GamerGater, Ryulong decided to return to editing the contentious article. It is clear that both the answering of questions on a GamerGate related subreddit, and receiving funds from a campaign posted to the same subreddit, could be perceived as a conflict of interest, and TechRaptor applauds Wikipedia admins for attempting to step in and return the article to neutrality.

Yes, I believe that's also a fact about the name. Had it not sounded like "are you long", though, I imagine he would have chosen something that did.

-edit
I feel I may need to explain more. Imagine if, instead of "Ryu" and "long", the derivations were "Sho" and "Xho". If this were the case, I have no doubt that he would have opted for the (imaginary) alternative "Biku" "dong".

Watch the case talk pages on this one. I believe you will see bickering at the same high level of other ArbCom cases in which fervent activism is involved. The editors who are emotionally invested in keeping the GG articles on message will really be campaigning to get this case decided in their favor. They are afraid that if they lose this case, they lose control of the article, and thus over the narrative in Western society as a whole because of how much Google juice that article gets.

The journalist had assumed her abusers were middle-aged men. “It turns out that mostly they’re young boys and the problem is they don’t know any better, so responding to them rationally didn’t resolve the situation. And it got to the point where their comments were starting to make me feel really uncomfortable.”

When Pearce sat down to figure out the best way to resolve the situation, she concluded she was best off contacting the boys’ mothers directly, “especially as most of them write to me through their personal Facebook pages. It’s shockingly easy to find out who their families are.”
It usually does on Facebook, because you can go thru their friends list. On Wikipedia, it's more difficult, and they know it.

Another "classic" thread.
http://8chan.co/gamergate/res/3337.html
It already has a "Wall of Shame", it's called WP:BANNED, you dildos.

On one hand, it's good to see Wales and company attacked and criticized freely.
On the other hand, these are the wrong people to do it.

I like the way Ryulong‎ calls it an argument rather than discussion. Think that nicely sums up his attitude to Wikipedia.

I'm also enjoying the freedom of no longer being an admin and not really caring that much anymore. It's quite liberating.

I see some familiar names among those enforcing admins, as in admins who often jump in to selectively sanction editors who dare to mess with certain topics such as race and intelligence, pseudoscience, and alternative medicine. How is GamerGate related?

High five. You should try no longer being an editor either.
My question, to this esteemed Wiki community, is this: Do you think that a Wiki could successfully generate a useful encyclopedia? -- JimboWales
Yes, but in the end it wouldn't be an encyclopedia. It would be a wiki. -- WardCunningham (Jan 2001)

So, how does ArbCom move forward with this case? It seems to me that even if they adopt the off with their heads approach as they did with GGTF, there will always be more meat/sockpuppets and there will always be less experienced POV warriors to fight them. So what can ArbCom do to the article itself to resolve the longstanding issues? I honestly don't know what they can do to stop the fighting short of deleting the article and protecting it.

Also, what is the WO opinion on Masem?

They'll handle it just like they've handled other intractable editwars -- a few slaps on the wrist, followed by hiding.

I would tell you but you might not believe it.

So nothing then, and the article will just fester like a sore until the new ArbCom comes in a few months or years down the line and royally fucks it over.
I would tell you but you might not believe it.
At this point with the whole blowup, nothing would surprise me very much.

I find a happy coincidence that GamerGate and GenderGap share the same acronym.

Huh, NorthbySouthBaranof was formerly known as user Polarscribe (T-C-L)/FCYTravis (T-C-L)?

I'm topic banned from the GamerGate suite of articles. I probably should keep a list of the topics I'm banned from on my userpage, because I think it's now more than three and I have a hard time remembering more than three things at a time unless I write it down.

I'm hereby banning Notvelty from all turd-related topics, broadly construed.

Practically all of them are arrogant, but "turd" would imply that they might have a positive effect on human affairs if used as fertilizer, and we know that to be untrue.

Couldn't that be construed as the great majority of threads here?
