Hard blocking anyone who works for a company and says so

Unread post by HRIP7 » Tue May 01, 2012 9:36 pm

Apparently it is Wikipedia admin practice to hard block people who register an account name that includes their company name. This is in violation of Wikipedia's own policies – WP:ORGNAME (T-H-L) and WP:UAAI (T-H-L) state,
"Users who adopt such usernames, but who are not editing problematically in related articles, should not be blocked. Instead, they should be gently encouraged to change their username."
"Unambiguous use of a name or URL of a company, group or product as a username is generally not permitted, and users who adopt such a username may be blocked if their editing behavior appears to be promotional. However, users who adopt such usernames but who are not editing problematically should not be summarily blocked; instead, they should be gently but firmly encouraged to change their username."
However, that's not what happened to Admarkroundsquare (T-C-L). She or he tried to upload a new logo for their company, Round Square, and then asked for help at the help desk:
How do I delete a page from Wikipedia that was produced ages ago. I need to replace the whole page with up to date information and new logo. I am employed by the organisation Round Square.

thanks
This heinous request for help evidently caught the eye of Orangemike (T-C-L). Now, Orangemike is an "alternative" type, and a famous science fiction fan. He does not like companies. He believes that
Companies are legal fictions consisting of various interlocking legal fictions, operating for the benefit of a tiny coterie of upper executives, occasionally for the benefit of larger shareholders and speculators, and only accidentally for the benefit of ordinary employees, contractors, customers, minority shareholders (actual investors) and/or frontline executives and professionals. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:55, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
The result:
14:06, 26 April 2012 Orangemike (talk | contribs) blocked Admarkroundsquare (talk | contribs) (account creation blocked) with an expiry time of indefinite ({{spamusernameblock}})
This means that the account holder is now not even able to register a new, policy-compliant account. Of course, this "employed people are evil" approach is one way to keep Wikipedia demographics skewed.

Looks like this area of Wikipedia's administration desperately needs some adult intervention. Too bad there is none to be had.

Orangemike doesn't just edit science fiction, he's also an ex Democratic candidate who like to create articles to trash Republicans from Tennessee where he once stood for office, and Wisconsin where he lives.

Mike has done this scores of times. No one even knows how many policies he has abused or ignored.
Yet he continues on merrily. No one seems to care. (I note that Tim Song has changed the account block
so they can create a new account. That may or may not last. Because OM has no discernible attention
span, he may not even notice.)

Repeating: Orangemike should be desysopped. He is one of their worst, most incompetent, most irrational admins.

The most amusing thing is his edits to sci-fi topics.

The editor so staunchly against conflict of interest himself has something of one; being a prominent member of the sci-fi fandom community and having been invited as a "speaker" at conventions...

But it gets better. Because if you go back through his edits to sci-fi topics you find, apart from poor sourcing, stuff that looks fairly promotional - like noting things about sci-fi sites, and linking to them as the (primary) source.

My irony meter exploded.

OM's rather more liberal critria for the notability of SF fans and fanzines than for companies can me seen in the thread at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:David ... sible_size User:DeafMan is Dave Langford, the subject of the article in question. Although most of his Hugo Awards are in his capacity as a fan writer or fan editor, he does have one for a professionally published story and is likely to acquire one as a joint editor of the 3rd Edition of the Encyclopedia of SF when the winner is announced in about five months' time.

It is really absurd to force all these people to register Mickey Mouse names like User:FlyingTiara or whatever, instead of genuinely useful names like User:Jack at the Museum of Inuit Art – just to make sure that the Museum of Inuit Art does not get any free advertising by having its name pop up in Wikipedia edit histories.

Because, gee, so many people read those, and then all these people would go and visit the Museum of Inuit Art, and that would be EVIL.
