Not policy, but advice: About posting on this forum

Unread post by Zoloft » Thu May 30, 2013 12:40 pm

At Wikipediocracy, we don't generally set policies, because they can be used to intimidate members and create a battleground environment.
Wikipedia is full of rules and policies, and they are mostly used as weapons.

That said:
  • We forbid here the posting of anything illegal, including but not limited to child pornography.
  • We may redact or reduce any post that contains a copyrighted work in its entirety. If you want to refer to a copyrighted work such as a newspaper article, please quote a salient part and link to the article.
  • We discourage the posting of material visible that is considered 'Not Safe For Work.' Please hide that material, if it needs to be discussed, behind a link and mark it NSFW.
  • We discourage joining this site just to attack a member here, and not hewing to the purpose of this site: to be critics of Wikipedia and the WMF.
  • We may remove or lock a topic if it becomes divisively political.
In this forum we criticize Wikipedia, the WMF, Jimbo Wales, and other people that mismanage Wikipedia and other WMF projects. We criticize those who defame people (in articles and in pseudo-legal proceedings), or otherwise behave poorly. A certain amount of rough-and-tumble language is expected here, particularly between forum members, who can freely respond to each other as peers. It's a discussion forum, not an attempt to create an encyclopedia. Nevertheless, our influence is increasing, and we now have more of the world's eyes upon us.

Some advice:
  • Criticize people's actions, words, and ethics. We discourage criticizing people because of their appearance, gender, or sexuality.
  • Use common sense. Are you legitimately criticizing a person's acts? Or just insulting them?
  • Consider how your characterization of an opponent or a Wikipedia personality will make you look. How will it affect our site's reputation?
Let's present ourselves to the world as a forum and blog that can bring to heel one of the most influential web sites on the planet.

Reason: Added the word 'lock' to politcal topics

Please stop posting in the same topic two, three, or more times in a row. Edit one post to contain your points.
Along the same lines, don't post walls of text in one post.
Don't quote quotes of quotes unless absolutely needed for context. Trim (carefully) people you are quoting to just the portion you are replying to.
In summary, try to be more concise.
If you spend the time to do this, your posts will be more readable, more quoteable, and more persuasive.

As a further incentive, members have been banned for repeatedly violating this. It's just respecting your fellow forum members.

Thanks!
